1988 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 -- PV Stallions (93-69) vs. San Mateo Traffic (91-71) Last year's champs vs. this year's hopefuls. The PV Stallions won their first ever pennant on the backs of one of the league's best rotations. Bobby Welch won 18 games with a 2.44 ERA, and Charlie Hough and Tom Candiotti each won 17. Longtime ace Doc Gooden brought up the rear with a "mere" 15 wins. Closer Julio Franco won 9 games with 24 saves and a 2.64 ERA. The hitting staff was made up of role players, with Mike Marshall being the only person with more than 10 homers (he had 24). What they did have was speed. The Stallions led the league in stolen bases with 187, and rookie Roberto Alomar, Herbert Perry, Tracey Jones and Cecil Espy all had at least 20 stolen bases. Dave Gallahger hit .373 in 410 at bats. San Mateo won it all in 1987, and contended for the Gehrig pennant all this season before settling 2 games back and nabbed the league wildcard. Jose Canseco had a strong second half to finish with 43 homers, 109 runs scored, 114 RBI, 42 stolen bases, and overall MVP-level numbers. Kirby Puckett hit 24 dingers with a .325 average nad 104 RBI's. Shortstop Tony Fernandez finished with 23 stolen bases and 86 runs scored. Tim Belcher finished with 10 wins and a 2.03 ERA. Nolan Ryan had 13 wins and 236 strikeouts. Jimmy Key finished with 11 wins and a 2.45 ERA. Doug Mirabella saved 14 games with a miniscule 1.72 ERA. Their 3.14 ERA was best in the GT conference. The Traffic dominated the regular season series 7-3, but the PV Stallions have home field advantage. **************************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Traffic (Belcher) at Stallions (Welch) Game one of this round one series featured two Gehrig division rivals. The San Mateo Traffic wasted little time in putting themselves on the board. In the first inning, Kirby Puckett doubled, Jose Canseco walked, and Dave Parker drove them both in with a 2-RBI double. In the 4th inning, with 2 runners on, Tony Fernandez hit an RBI single. A few batters later, Dave Bergman singled with 2 runners on. Davis rounded 3rd, and Belcher rounded 2nd. Orsulak tried to throw Davis out at home, but the ball sails over Boone's head. Both Davis and Belcher score. 5-0 Traffic. Canseco smacks a 2-run shot in the 5th to put it out of reach. PV wasn't able to rally back enough, and lose game one by a score of 8-5. TRAFFIC LEAD 1-0. In the top of the first inning, Curt Wilkenson singled, and from first base got to watch Jose Canseco bash one over the wall. 2-0 Traffic. In the bottom of the 1st, Nolan Ryan's first pitch to Jumpin' Joe Orsulak went sailing over the wall. 2-1 Traffic. Mike Marshall singled, and was driven in on a Robbie Alomar double to tie things up at 2. All in the 1st inning. In the 2nd inning, Rance Mulliniks took Ryan deep with a solo shot. 3-2 Stallions. Then, Ozzie Guillen doubled. Up came Ryan's nemesis, Joe Orsulak... who went deep again. 5-2 Stallions. The Stallions kept the Traffic at arms length through most of the game, making it a 7-3 game going into the top of the 9th. In the top of the 9th, the Stallions got 2 outs, but to get to those 2 outs they loaded the bases. Up came Jose Canseco, who had a good series so far. Canseco was walked by John Franco, forcing in a run and making it 7-4 PV. Up next was pinch hitter Joey Meyer. A homer would put the Traffic the lead. But Meyer wasn't up to it. A ground out ended the game, and the Stallions win game two by a score of 7 to 4. SERIES TIED 1-1. PV was 1 game away from advancing to the GT conference finals. Both starting pitchers had their stuff, keeping the score 0-0 through 5 innings. In the top of the 6th, with Joe Orsulak at first, Mike Marshall doubled, driving in the first run of the game. 1-0 Stallions. In the bottom of the inning, the Traffic put themselves on the board, when Tony Fernandez hit a bases loaded, 2 out, 2 RBI double. In the bottom of the 7th, the bases were again loaded with Traffic sluggers, and got another run from a Kevin Seitzer sacrifice fly. 3-1 Traffic. The Zippys had a shot in the top of the 9th inning to win it, with the bases loaded and 2 outs. But Mike Macfarlane couldn't get it done. Mirabella gets Macfarlane to whiff, and San Mateo lives to see another day with the 3-1 victory. STALLIONS LEAD 3-2. Later in the inning, with 2 outs and runners at first and third, Dave Parker and Tony Fernandez hit successive RBI singles, making the score 3-1. In the 7th inning, Herr hit another RBI single for a 4-1 Traffic game. The Stallions had their shot at taking the lead in the bottom of the 8th, when they had a bases loaded situation, with 2 outs and Joe Orsulak at the plate. The Stallions led the series early on, but the Traffic have won the last couple of games. The winner of this game moves on. In the top of the first inning, Kevin Seitzer walked. Puckett reached on error. Jose Canseco singled, and Seitzer tried to score from 2nd, but was thrown out. 0-0. In the top of the 4th, Jose Canseco singled, stole second and advanced to third after Pena's throw to get him out went into the outfield. Canseco would score on a wild pitch. 1-0 Traffic. In the 6th inning, with Darren Jackson at 1st, Robert Alomar singled. Jackson tried to go from first to third. Canseco threw to 3rd to get him out, but the ball got past Seitzer. Jackson scores, and we have a tie ballgame. In the 8th inning, Jackson comes through again, hitting a 1 out triple. Dave Gallagher's single would score Jackson, to the delight of the home crowd. We would move to the top of the 9th with the Stallions holding a slim 1-run lead. Tom Candiotti was still pitching for the Stallions. First batter up, Dave Parker, flied out. So did the second batter, Tony Fernandez. With 2 outs, it was all up to Curt Wilkerson. Wilkerson singled. Up next was Gary Carter. Carter singled, moving Wilkerson to 3rd. Next up was Donell Nixon. A single would tie things up. A double would put them in the lead. But it was not to be. Candiotti strikes Nixon out, and the game ends 2-1 in PV's favor. The Stallions win the series 4 games to 3, and advance to the GT conference finals. STALLIONS WIN 4-3.
