1988 Gehrig-Tiant Conference Final PV Stallions (4-3 over Traffic) vs. Boston Bulldogs (4-2 over Stars) The Stallions roll on. After holding off the Traffic in a tight Gehrig division race, and holding off the Traffic again in first round play, the Stallions are looking to take their first ever playoff appearance all the way to the world series. Boston scored first in the 2nd inning with a Kevin Mitchell solo blast. Ozzie Guillen followed it up in the 3rd with a homer of his own (!) to tie it up at 1. In the bottom of the third inning, Wally Joyner hit a double and scored on Mike Greenwell's single. Greenwell scored himself on a Geno Petralli single. 3-1 Boston. In the top of the 6th inning, Cecil Espy doubled for the Stallions. Darren Jackson hit a nubber in front of the plate, and Petralli threw it to Joyner for the out .. or at least that was the plan. It sailed past Joyner's glove, and Espy scored. 3-2 Boston. Later on in the inning Robert Alomar hit a sacrifice fly to score Jackson. 3-3 tie ballgame. Boston would retake the lead in the bottom of the 6th inning with a Geno Petralli solo home run. In the bottom of the 7th, Mike Greenwell singled, moved to 2nd on a wild pitch, and scored on a Kirk Gibson single. 5-3 Boston. Jeff Parrett was on the mound for Boston in the 9th inning. Bret Boone flied out for #1. Joe Orsulak grounded out for out #2. Mike Macfarlane hit a fly out for out #3. That was it. Boston wins game three by a score of 5-3, and are 1 game away from advancing to the CDBL world series. BULLDOGS LEAD 3-0. Down 0-3, game 4 was a must win game. The Bulldogs got consecutive singles from Wally Backman and Mike Greenwell in the 1st, and a Doc Gooden balk moved them to 2nd & 3rd. A Kirk Gibson single would score Backman for a 1-0 Boston contest. The Stallions tied things up in the top of the second when Robby Alomar doubled and scored on another double by Rance Mulliniks. Geno Petralii broke the deadlock in the 3rd with a solo shot. 2-1 Boston. The Stallions brought things to a tie yet again in the top of the 3rd with a Mike Marshall RBI double. 2-2. The Stallions pulled ahead for the first time in the game in the 5th inning. Claudell Washinton scored on a Mike Marshall groundout to make it 3-2 PV. Robby Alomar doubled again and scored on a single from Mulliniks. 4-2 Stallions. In the bottom of the 7th, Ken Oberkfell singled to bring up pinch hitter Steve Balboni. A home run would tie things up ... and that's just what Balboni did. Deep off of Gooden, Balboni ties things up at 4 with a 2-run blast. The game would go to the 9th inning with the score tied at 4. Rob Murphy was on the mound for Boston. Ozzie Guillen struck out. Jeff Kunkel struck out. Jackie Gutierrez flied out. The top of the 9th was done. In the bottom of the 9th, John Franco was pitching for the Stallions. Glenn Wilson hit a grounder to Mulliniks, who threw it to first, but the throw was high, causing Marshall to leave the bag. Wilson safe at first, error to Mulliniks. Luckily for PV that error was erased with the next batter, Mookie Wilson, who hit into a DP. Wally Backman struck out to end the inning. This game would go into extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Jeff Parrett came on board for Boston. Washington flied out. Dave Gallagher grounded out. Mike Marshall struck out to end PV's 10th inning. In the bottom of the 10th, John Franco was still on the mound for PV. First batter up, Mike Greenwell, grounded out. Next batter, Kirk Gibson, singled. Then Kevin Mitchell singled, and Gibson advanced to 3rd. All with 1 out. Wasn't looking good for PV. Up next was Wally Joyner. Joyner hits into a potential DP ball, but Alomar decides rather than complete the DP, to throw the ball home. But Macfarlane can't make the tag, and Gibson scores. Bulldogs win! Boston wins game 4 by a 5-4 margin, and advance to the CDBL world series. BULLDOGS WIN 4-0.
