1988 CDBL WORLD SERIES PREVIEW Milwaukee Mashers (4-3 over Riots, AP Conf Finals) vs. Boston Bulldogs (4-2 vs Stars rd 1, 4-0 vs Stallions GT Conf Finals) The last series of the season features two teams who met in the same place just a few years back. In 1985 the Mashers and Bulldogs battled it out in the world series before Rickey and the boys put Boston away in 5 games. Boston hopes things will be different this year. Back then, the big bat in the middle was a Dale Murphy in his prime. This year, the big bat is veteran Kirk Gibson, who has 2 homers, 7 runs scored and 7 RBI's in 10 games. Mike Greenwell and catcher Geno Petralli each have 6 runs scored. Jose Uribe has been a lefty-killer, hitting .500 with 5 runs scored in 5 games played. Charlie Leibrandt, Bob Knepper and Jerry Reuss all have ERA's under 2 and a combined 4-0 record in 8 starts. Jeff Parrett has a 2.25 ERA with 3 saves. The Milwaukee Mashers enjoyed a 1st round bye by posting the league's best regular season record. They had a fight on their hands in the first round, besting DC in 7 games. Veteran Fred Lynn has had the best post- season on the team, hitting .333, with 2 triples, 2 homers and 7 runs scored in 6 games played. Terry Pendleton has 5 runs scored. Frank Viola has a 2.00 ERA in 2 starts (as well as 2 wins). Rick Reuschel, a veteran of the '85 series, is 1-0 with a 1.06 ERA in 2 starts. Milwaukee won the season series 5-1, and have home field advantage. **************************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Bulldogs (Leibrandt) at Mashers (Reuschel) Milwaukee is a team of many talents. In the bottom of the 1st, Terry Pendleton hit a dribbler in front of the plate. Petralli throws to first to get him out, but the throw gets past Joyner, making Pendleton safe at first by error. Ellis Burks moves him over to second by a sacrifice bunt. Pendleton advances to third on a Geno Petralli passed ball (wasn't his inning!), and finally scores on a Rickey Henderson sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs tied things up in the top of the 3rd, when Mookie Wilson hit into a double play with 0 outs and runners at 1st & 3rd. The Mashers got their double play, but Oberkfell scored from 3rd. 1-1. The Mashers showed they had many talents, but up until the 7th inning, the ability to get a hit wasn't one of them. In fact, Charlie Leibrandt had a no hitter through six before Rickey Henderson got the first single for the Mashers in the 7th. In the top of the 8th, pinch hitter Steve Balboni smacked a solo home run to put Boston ahead 2-1. Mookie Wilson tripled and scored on Wally Backman's single to make it 3-1 Boston. The Bulldogs went into the bottom of the 9th holding onto a 3-1 lead. Jeff Parrett was on the mound for Boston. First batter up, Ellis Burks, grounded out. Second batter, Rickey Henderson, grounded out. Then, Carlton Fisk walked and Alan Trammell hit a single. Alvin Davis, representing the winning run, was at the plate. But Davis wouldn't get it done today. He grounds out to Oberkfell, ending the inning and the game. Boston wins game 1 by a score of 3 to 1. BULLDOGS LEAD 1-0. In the top of the 2nd, Chili Davis and Rick Cerone singled, putting runners at first and third. Buddy Bell hit into a potention inning-ending DP situation, but Alan Trammell's throw to first was wide, making the runner at first safe and allowing Davis to score from 3rd. 1-0 Bulldogs. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Mashers loaded the bases with 1 out. Nothing came of it, as Paul O'Neill hit into an inning ending double-play. Kirk Gibson hit a solo homer in the top of the 4th to make it 2-0 Boston. Boston make it a 4-0 game in the 5th on RBI singles by Downs and Greenwell. In the 7th inning, the Mashers finally got on the board, when Fisk doubled, moved to 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on Salazar's single. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Ellis Burks doubled, and scored on Johnny Ray's triple. 4-2 Bulldogs. Larry Anderson comes on board, and gives up an RBI single to Alan Trammell. 4-3 Boston. Anderson balks, moving Trammell to 2nd. Later in the inning with Trammell at third, Carlton Fisk hit a grounder to Hubbard. Hubbard throws home, but Trammel evades the tag. 4-4 tie ball game. As have many games in this post-season, the game was tied going into the 9th inning. Rob Dibble was on the mound for Milwaukee. Up first was Chili Davis .. who took Dibble deep! Solo home run, Boston hasthe 5-4 lead. That's all the Bulldogs would get in the inning, so they would have to hope a 1 run lead would last them for 3 outs. Jeff Parrett was once again on the mound for Boston. First batter up, Paul O'Neill, grounded out. Pinch hitter Wellman struck out for out #2. Terry Puhl walked to put the winning run, Ellis Burks, at the plate. Burks singled, moving Puhl to third. Up next was Johnny Ray. A single would tie the game, a double would probably win it. But Ray did neither, striking out to end the game. Boston wins game 2 by a score of 5 to 4. BULLDOGS LEAD 2-0. Ellis Burks struck out, and Rickey Henderson grounded out to get Boston out of the inning. The Bulldogs tied things up in the 2nd on a solo home-run by Geno Petralli. The Mashers pulled ahead in the 3rd inning on an RBI single by Fred Lynn. A passed ball would score Alan Trammell from 3rd. In the top of the 4th, with runners at 1st & 3rd, Mike LaValliere hit an RBI single to make it 4-1 Milwaukee. DeLeon was done for the day. Jerry Reuss, who normally would have started, came on in relief. He threw a wild pitch, scoring Pasqual Perez. 5-1 Mashers. Both teams would score more runs in the later innings, but Milwaukee was always able to keep the Bulldogs at arm's length. Milwaukee wins game four by a score of 10-4, and tie up the series. In the top of the 1st inning, with runners at 1st & 3rd, Carlton Fisk drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly. 1-0 Milwaukee. In the top of the 3rd inning, with runners at 1st & 3rd, Charlie Leibrandt balked, advancing Alvin Davis to home place. 2-0 Milwaukee. Paul O'Neill hit a single that scored another run. 3-0 Milwaukee. In the bottom of the 5th, with Wally Backman at 3rd and Mike Greenwell at 2nd, Kirk Gibson hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Backman. Greenwell goes to third, and Burks tries throwing him out from center field .. but the ball sails past Pendleton's glove. Greenwell scores, and the game is now 3-2 in Milwaukee's favor. In the top of the 6th inning, Rickey Henderson doubled and scored on a Fisk single. Mookie Wilson make it 4-3 in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI single. In the bottom of the 7th, with runners at 3rd & 2nd, Geno Petralli hit a deep fly out, letting a Bulldog runner score. 4-4 tie. Going into the 9th inning, the score was tied 4-4. Larry Anderson got 3 easy outs in the top of the inning (something rather uncommon for him in this post-season!). It was now Boston's turn at the plate. Rob Dibble was closing the game out for Milwaukee. Kirk Gibson came rumbling out of the dugout for his at bat. Gibson crushed a Dibble fastball deep .. deep .. deep into an outfielder mitt. Out #1. Up next was Kevin Mitchell. Mitchell would have none of "The Natural" heroics surrounding him. He'd just smash a line drive home run to end the game. And that's just what he did. Boston wins game five, just like that, 5-4, in the bottom of the 9th, and are 1 game away from their first ever CDBL championship. BULLDOGS LEAD 3-2. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the bases were loaded with Masher hitters with 0 outs, Terry Pendleton at the plate and Kelly Downs on the mound. Downs won the matchup this time, striking out Pendleton. Frank Viola was at the plate next, and hit into a potential DP ball ... only Viola was just fast enough to avoid the out at first. A runner scores, and the Mashers have a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs answer in the top of the 3rd inning with a Mike Greenwell solo home run. In the bottom of the 3rd, Milwaukee took the lead again on a solo home run by Alvin Davis. Alan Trammell and Fred Lynn were issued walks. A Downs wild pitch moved them to 3rd & 2nd. Ellis Burks & Alan Trammell attempt a suicide squeeze bunt, with great success. Both Burks and Trammell are safe, 3-1 Milwaukee. Mike LaValliere would hit an RBI single to make it 4-1. In the 5th & 6th innings, Fred Lynn and Kirk Gibson would trade solo shots. 5-2 Mashers. In the top of the 8th inning, Rickey Jordan shortened the lead to 2 with a solo home run of his own. The Bulldogs would go into the top of the 9th down 3-5. 2 runs separated them from the championship. Frank Viola was still on the mound for Milwaukee. First batter up, Rick Cerone, singled. Did Viola get pulled in favor of a closer? Nope, he stayed in. Next batter up, Glenn Wilson, grounded out, moving Cerone to 2nd. Did Viola get pulled in favor of a closer now? Nope, he still stayed in. Next batter was Glenn Hubbard, who hit the ball deep ... but not deep enough. Out #2, but Cerone was able to advance to 3rd. Now did Viola get pulled in favor of a closer? No. Up next was game 5's hero, and the tying run, Kevin Mitchell. Would Mitchell's magic hold out again? Mitchell hit a Viola pitch deep ... but not deep enough. Mitchell's deep fly out records the third out, and the game ends 5-3 in Milwaukee's favor. The series is tied 3-3, with a decisive game seven to determine the CDBL world championship. Win or lose, this would be the end of the CDBL season. Between two teams, the entire season boiled down to 1 game. And only a classic game would do in this classic series. In the bottom of the 2nd, Alan Trammell singled, stole second, and scored on Alvin Davis's single. 1-0 Milwaukee. Later in the inning, Johnny Ray scored on Allan Anderson's single. 2-0 Milwaukee. In the top of the 4th inning, Mike Greenwell singled, stole second, and scored on Kirk Gibson's single. 2-1 Milwaukee. Next up, Chili Davis, who singled. Gibson tried to stretch it to 3rd, and Burks tried to throw him out. The ball hit Gibson, deflected off so Pendleton couldn't get to it, and Gibson scored. 2-2 tie ball game. Chili Davis winds up at second. Rick Cerone singled, scoring Davis and giving Boston the 3-2 lead. In the top of the 5th inning, with runners at first and third, Anderson balked, and Jose Uribe scored from 3rd base. 4-2 Boston. In the top of the 6th inning, Buddy Bell hit an RBI double to score Kirk Gibson. 5-2 Boston. In the top of the 8th, Chili Davis hit an RBI double to make it a 6-2 Bulldogs game. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Jeff Parrett was on the mound for Boston. Johnny Ray started the Mashers comeback with an RBI double. 6-3 Bulldogs. Eventually the bases were loaded with 2 outs. The winning run, Mike Lavalliere, was at the plate. The pressure was on Parrett, and he slipped. Wild pitch scored a run, and everyone moved up a base. 6-4 Boston. Lavalliere was issued a walk to load the bases yet again. Terry Pendleton was now at the plate. Any sort of hit would likely tie the game. But Pendleton didn't come through, popping out to end the inning. In the top of the 9th, the Bulldogs extended their lead by one with a Mike Greenwell RBI triple. 7-4 Bulldogs. Jeff Parrett remained on the mound in the bottom of the 9th, trying to protect a 3 run lead. First batter up, Ellis Burks, hit an infield single. Next up, Rickey Henderson. Henderson didn't do so well, hitting into a double play. The Mashers' season was now down to 1 out, and it was all up to Carlton Fisk to start something. Alas, it was not to be.
