1988 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW -- Boston Bulldogs (91-71) vs. Hollywood Stars (92-70) These two Tiant division rivals battled it out throughout the season. Only in the last week did Hollywood pull out in front to win the division by a single game. The Stars got a great pitching performance out of Danny Jackson, who won 20 games with a 2.75 ERA. Walt Terrell and Don Carman combined for 27 wins with ERA's under 3.18. Jerry Reed won 10 games in relief, with 9 saves and a 2.59 ERA. Superstar Eric Davis had another great year despite the dominance of pitching, hitting 29 homers, with 92 runs scored, 100 RBI, and 49 stolen bases (with nice .296/.371/.530 stats). Andy Van Slyke hit 28 homers with 89 runs scored and 31 stolen bases. Cal Ripken hit 24 homers with 72 RBI at the shortstop position. The Boston Bulldogs had one of the league's most potent offenses, scoring 718 runs to yield them the league wildcard. Leading the charge was off-season acquistion Kirk Gibson, who hit 28 homers, with 108 runs scored and 99 RBI. Mike Greenwell hit .289 with 97 runs scored and 92 RBI's. Kevin Mitchell hit 20 homers with 74 RBI, while Steve Balboni hit 19 homers in limited action. Charlie Leibrandt was a mid-season acquisition, and paid off big time, going 7-2 with a 1.83 ERA with the team, and 18-13 overall. Jeff Russell went 13-9 with a 2.88 ERA, while Jerry Reuss went 15-9 with a 3.08 ERA. Reliever Jeff Parrett was a perfect 7-0 with a 2.00 ERA. The Boston Bulldogs actually won the regular season series 7-5, but due to their 1 extra loss, the Stars clinched the pennant and home field advantage. **************************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Bulldogs (Leibrandt) at Stars (Jackson) The round one matchup between Tiant division rivals featured each team's ace pitchers, and it showed. Through 4 innings, neither team could score a run. Finally, in the bottom of the 5th, Harold Baines hit a 0 out double, and scored on Don Slaught's double. In the 7th inning, the Bulldogs tied things up when Chili Davis singled, scoring Kirk Gibson from 2nd. 1-1. Both starters put in excellent starts, each giving up only a run, but both would leave the game without a decision. It would go to the relievers to solve this one. In the bottom of the 8th, with Larry Anderson on the mound for Boston, pinch hitter Darryl Evans went deep with a solo shot. 2-1 Hollywood. Boston would go into the top of the 9th with only 3 outs to tie or win. Juan Berenguer was on the mound for Hollywood facing Chili Davis. Davis singled to bring the go-ahead run, Geno Petralli, at the plate. Petralli hits a grounder to Cal Ripken, who boots it. 2 on, no outs. Buddy Bell comes up to the plate, and singled to load the bases with 0 outs. Wally Backman is up next. Walk. A run is forced in, and the game is tied at 2. Pinch hitter Steve Balboni comes to the plate and singled, giving Boston the 3-2 lead. Larry McWilliams comes on the mound to replace Bereunger. Jose Uribe is at the plate, and McWilliams doesn't do any better. Uriba singled, scoring Buddy Bell to make it a 4-2 Bulldogs lead. Greenwell comes up to the plate ... and clears it with a shot over the wall. GRAND SLAM! Boston busted this one wide open. The lineup would bat around in the 9th on their way to scoring *10* runs in the top of the 9th. What was once a tight game becomes a late-inning blowing. Boston wins big in game 1, by a final of 11-3. BULLDOGS LEAD 11-3. In the top of the first inning, Jose Uribe singled, stole second and moved to third on Slaught's error in attempting to throw him out. Uribe scored while Rickey Jordan hit into a DP. Kirk Gibson smacked a solo home run to make it 2-0 Boston in the 1st inning. In the second, Jose Uribe hit an RBI single to make it 3-0. The Stars finally put a runner up on the board in the 2nd, when Slaught hit a 2-on, 2-out RBI double to narrow the lead to 2. In the 3rd inning, with the bases loaded, Buddy Bell hit a 2 RBI double. 5-1 Boston, and Carman was done for the day. Boston would score 2 more times in the next two innings to make it 7-1 heading into the bottom of the 5th. In the bottom of the 5th, Hollywood attempted to get themselves back in the game. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Cal Ripken hit a single, scoring 2 runners. Bobby Bonilla hit an RBI single to make it 7-4. Bob Knepper was done for Boston. But Boston wasn't done putting runs on the board, answering with 3 of their on in the top of the 6th. 10-4 Boston going into the bottom of the 7th. In the 7th, Hollywood put up 2 runs on the board. Still nothing to worry about for Boston, they were still up 10-6. In the 8th, with Jeff Parrett on the mound and runners at 1st & 3rd, Craig Reynolds hit a 2-out, 2 RBI double. 10-8 Boston. Suddenly that commanding lead for most of the game doesn't seem so commanding. Parrett would go to the mound for Boston at the bottom of the 9th inning, trying to protect a 2-run lead. In the 9th, Parrett issued a 0 out walk to Dave Magadan. Harold Baines singled, putting the tying runner at first and the winning run at the plate. Parrett buckled down and got Don Slaught to pop out for out #1. Mike Diaz struck out for out #2. With 2 outs and 2 on, Milt Thompson was the last hope for Hollywood, but it was not to be. Thompson grounded out to first, and Boston wins game 2 by a score of 10-8. BOSTON LEADS 2-0. The Bulldogs set out in the lead in the 2nd, when with 0 outs and runners at first and third, Wally Joyner hit into a double play, scoring Gibson from 3rd. In the top of the 5th inning, with runners at 1st & 3rd for Hollywood, Robby Thompson hit an RBI single to tie things up at 1. Eric Davis would hit an RBI single of his own to put the Stars up 2-1. The Bulldogs would tie things up in the 8th on a Ken Oberkfell solo home run. We would go into the 9th with a 2-2 tie. Jeff Parrett was on the mound for Boston. First batter up, Harold Baines, popped out. Second batter, Don Slaught, walked on 4 straight pitches. Andy Van Slyke's infield hit would put runnings at 1st & 2nd with 1 out. Next batter up, Milt Thompson, struck out. Robby Thompson ended the inning with a strikeout of his own. The Bulldogs would get a chance to win it in the bottom of the 9th. Juan Berenguer was on the mound for Hollywood. Wally Backman, first runner up, first runner down with a ground out. Mike Greenwell was the second, popping out. Up next, with 2 outs and the score tied, was Kirk Gibson. Gibson gets one deep, but not deep enough. Fly out. We would go to extra innings. The Stars would not score in the top of the 10th, so the Bulldogs would get a free chance in the bottom of the inning. With Berenguer still on the mound, Kevin Mitchell got a 0 out single. A passed ball would advance Mitchell to 2nd with 0 outs. A sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly would win it for Boston, if they could do it. Up next was Wally Joyner. Was there a sacrifice bunt? Heck no. Joyner takes Berenguer out of the park, slamming home the game winning 2 run homer. Boston is now 1 game away from advancing to the GT conference finals. BULLDOGS LEAD 3-0. Down 0-3 in the series, they would need to win this one to continue. In the top of the 4th, the Stars put a run on the board first, with a Cal Ripken solo home run. The Bulldogs tied it up on Jose "thank goodness for lefties" Uribe, who blasted a solo shot. 1-1. Larry Anderson got 3 quick outs for Boston in the top of the 9th. Boston would get a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning. Jerry Reed would be on the mound for the Stars. Wally Joyner grounded out for the first out of the inning. Kirk Gibson walked. Chili Davis struck out. 2 outs. A Reed balk would advance Gibson to 2nd. Steve Balboni was at the plate. A single would win it, but it was not to be. Balboni grounded out, ending the inning. We'd go to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Larry Anderson was still pitching for the Bulldogs. Bobby Bonilla hit a 0 out double. Milt Thompson struck out for out #1. Up next was Andy Van Slyke, who singled. Bonilla rounded 3rd and scored. Hollywood had the 2-1 lead. Eric Davis singled, scoring Van Slyke. 3-1 Stars. Boston would go into the bottom of the 10th, needing to score at least 2 runs. On the mound again was Jerry Reed. Glenn Wilson, first batter up, was the first batter down, striking out. Greg Brock grounded out for out #2. It was all up to Ken Oberkfell now, but he wouldn't deliver. Oberkfell popped out, ending the game. Hollywood wins game 4 by a score of 3-1. BULLDOGS LEAD 3-1. In the top of the 3rd, Milt Thompson singled, moved to 2nd on a balk, and scored on an Eric Davis single. 1-0 Hollywood. Cal Ripken smacked an RBI single, scoring Davis. 2-0 Stars. In the bottom of the 4th, Mike Greenwell hit a 0 out double for Boston, and scored on Kirk Gibson's single. In the bottom of the 6th, Jose "MVP" Uribe singled, move to 2nd on Greenwell's groundout, and scored on a Rickey Jordan single. Tie ball game at 2. The game would go into the 9th inning with the score tied at 2. Rob Murphy was on the mound for Boston. The first batter up for Hollywood, Marvell Wynne, singled. Larry Anderson replaced Murphy on the mound. The next batter, Don Slaught, hit into a double-play. 2 outs, the score still tied at 2. Up next was pinch hitter Andy Van Slyke (once again, the Bulldogs and Stars aces would pitch brilliantly to a no-decision). With 2 outs, Van Slyke pulls through for Hollywood, taking Anderson deep for a solo shot. 3-2 Hollywood. Next up, Milt Thompson, who singled. He would steal 2nd, and score on Robby Thompson's single. Milt would finish the day 3 for 4 with 2 stolen bases and 2 runs. 4-2 Hollywood. Boston would go into the bottom of the 9th down 2 runs. Juan Berenguer was on the mound for the Stars. Chili Davis struck out for out #1. Geno Petralli walked. Buddy Bell, representing the tying run at the plate, ended up representing the 2nd out with a strikeout. Next batter, Wally Backman, walked. With 2 outs, and Berenguer still on the mound, up came Steve Balboni. With 1 swing, Balboni could send Boston to the next round of the playoffs. But it was not to be in game 5. Balboni strikes out, ending the game. Momentum has suddenly shifted to the Stars, who are back in this series. BULLDOGS LEAD 3-2. Now on their home turf for the rest of the series, Hollywood was looking to push this to game seven. Boston was looking to advance to the next round. Both starters pitched well early on. The first hit of the game happened in the 3rd, when Don Slaught hit a single. The first run happened in the top of the 5th, when with 2 on, Glenn Hubbard hit an RBI single. 1-0 Boston. In the 6th inning, Rickey Jordan hit a 1 out dobule, and scored on Kirk Gibson's single. Both teams kept the score low, and the Stars would find themselves still down 2-0 going into the bottom of the 9th. Jeff Parrett was on the mound for Boston. First batter up was Robby Thompson, who tagged Parrett for a ball over the wall. Solo home run! Stars down by 1 with 3 outs to go. Next batter up, Eric Davis, struck out. Cal Ripken, grounded out.
