1987 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Hollywood Stars (96-66) vs. Dark Valley Destinies (93-69) The Stars and Destinies battled all season for the Tiant division crown before the Stars pulled ahead in the final few weeks for good. Then for Dark Valley, it was a battle with the Ocean Beach Surfers for the GT conference wildcard, and clinched it on the last day of the season. The Destinies feature a bruising lineup. Jack Clark and Darryl Strawberry each hit 50 homers, had 400+ OPS, 600+ slugging, 140+ runs scored and 100+ RBI's. Howard Johnson "only" dinged in 39 homers with 107 runs and 110 RBI. OF Kal Daniels was limited to part-time duties this season, but hit .346. Mid-season acquisition Willie Randolph had a .424 on base average and scored 32 runs in 51 games. All this offense translated into a few wins for the pitchers, amazingly led by reliever Frank Williams, who won a startling 16 wins in relief this year. Ron Guidry, Dave Dravecky and Doug Drabek combined for 37 wins. Closer Craig Lefferts saved 24 games. The Hollywood Stars have had lots of promising prospects for years, and this year all that potential finally paid off. Eric Davis bashed 48 homers with triple digit runs and RBI totals. 2B Juan Samuel hit 36 homers, 131 RBI and 37 stolen bases as well. Outfielder Andy Van Slyke stole 49 bases and scored 120 runs. Ace Don Carman had a career year, going 20-7 with a 3.44 ERA. Bruce Hurst, Juan Guzman and Danny Jackson combined for 41 wins. Dan Plesac was more than decent at closing games, saving 34, winning 8 and posting a 2.67 ERA. The season series between the two was tied 6-6, but Hollywood has the home field advantage. But Dark Valley has been down the playoff road before, and they are the defending CDBL champions. GAME ONE -- Destinies (Guidry) at Stars (Carman) The Destinies came out swinging in this one. Willie Randolph walked on 4 straight pitchers from Don Carman, then Jack Clark was plunked with a pitch, and HoJo walked to load the bases. Darryl Strawberry hit a single to drive in the series' first run. Dave Henderson grounded out in a bases loaded situation, but a run scored anyways for the 2-0 DVD lead. The Stars got their name on the board in the bottom of the 2nd with a solo shot by Eric Davis. In the 3rd inning, the Dark Valley hit spigot started to open up. Steve Henderson doubled and scored on Barry Lyons' single. Ron Guidry got his 2nd hit of the game off Carman, who then was pulled from the game. Carman lasted only 2 2/3 innings, giving up 6 hits and 3 earned runs. In the 4th, HoJo notched a couple more RBI's on a 2-RBI single. Dave Henderson added another for a 6-1 lead. The Destinies added yet another 4 runs in the 6th, putting them up to an insurmountable 10-1 lead. Hollywood never got back in the game, as Dark Valley wins game 1 by a score of 10-3, and take home field advantage in the series. DESTINIES LEAD 1-0. GAME TWO -- Destinies (Walk) at Stars (Hurst) Could Hollywood recover from the severe beating they got yesterday at the hands of the Destinies? Dark Valley didn't score in the 1st inning, so that was a good sign for the Stars. The other was when Willie Upshaw scored the first run of the game with a solo shot in the 2nd. The Stars scored 3 more runs in the 4th, capped off by a bases loaded wild pitch from Bob Walk which allowed the 3rd run of the inning to score. 4-1 Hollywood. In the 5th, Eric Davis doubled and scored on Willie Upshaw's single (doesn't anyone else play for the Stars?) Upshaw would score in the 5th as well on a sacrifice fly from Cal Ripken. The Stars added a few more runs, and the Destinies finally started to score some runs in the 7th. But it was too little, too late. Pitcher Bruce Hurst went the distance as the Stars win game 2 by a score of 8 to 3. The next three games revert back to Dark Valley. SERIES TIED 1-1. GAME THREE -- Stars (Guzman) at Destinies (Dravecky) This one was a real slug-fest. The Stars scored in the 1st inning on singles by Eric Davis and Mike Scioscia. The Destinies cut the lead to 2-1 in the first on a leadoff homer by Kal Daniels. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Destinies let loose. With 2 outs and 2 on, Dave Dravecky hit a bases clearing double, giving Dark Valley the 3-2 lead. Kal Daniels homered again with Dravecky on board, giving the Destinies the 5-2 lead. In the third inning, the momentum shifted back to the Stars. With John Kruk on 1st, Eric Davis smacked a homer, narrowing the lead to 5-4. In the 4th inning, Bobby Bonilla hit an RBI double, and was himself driven in by a home run shot by Juan Samuel. 7-5 Hollywood. In the top of the 7th, with 2 runners on, Mike Scoscia cleared the bases with a double. Scioscia would later score on a Ken Schrom wild pitch in what would turn out to be a 6-run Hollywood inning. 13-5. The Destinies did score 4 runs in the 8th, but it was not enough. Hollywood ends another slugfest on top, with a 15-9 win over Dark Valley, and win back home field advantage. STARS LEAD 2-1. GAME FOUR -- Stars (Jackson) at Destinies (Drabek) The pitchers scream "No more!" But game four of this slugfest between Paige division rivals continue. The Stars picked up right where they left off in the 1st, when with Kruk & Samuel on base, Eric Davis smacked yet another homer for the quick 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 2nd, with Dave Henderson on base, Steve Henderson bashed a homer of his own, making it a 3-2 game. The Destinies took the lead in the 3rd on back-to-back homers by Jack Clark and HoJo. In the 5th, the Stars tied it up at 3-all on a 2 out RBI single by Juan Samuel. In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Destinies retook the lead on another long shot by Jack Clark, this one good for 2 runs. Dark Valley 6-4. The Destinies made it 7-4 in the 7th when Juan Samuel botched a double play ball, throwing it into the stands letting a runner score from 2nd. Turnabout is fair play, as in the next half inning Eric Davis hit a fly ball to Dave Henderson, who booted it to let Samuel score from 2nd. 7-5. In the top of the 9th, Craig Lefferts was on the mound for the Destinies to close out the game. The first batter up was Dave Collins, who walked. But Lefferts got Scioscia to strike out, Ross Jones to fly out, and Andy Van Slyke to strike out to end the game. Dark Valley wins another bruising battle by a score of 7-5 and tie up the series. GAME FIVE -- Stars (Carman) at Destinies (Guidry) After the first four scoring romps, would you believe a pitcher's duel started to break out? For the first 3 1/2 innings, nobody scored a run, and between the two teams only one batter got a hit. At least until the 4th inning. In the bottom of the 4th, with Jack Clark on first, Darryl Strawberry drove in the first two runs of the game with a 2-run shot. Then, with 2 more runners on, Barry Lyons hit a 3-run homer, making it a 5-0 Dark Valley game. Carmen's run gets cut short again, lasting only 3 1/3 innings. The blood letting wasn't over, as two more runs would score in the 4th to give the Destinies a 7-run 4th and a 7-0 lead. In the 6th, Dave Conception hit a bases loaded 2-RBI single for the 9-0 lead. The Destinies would score runs, and all Hollywood could come up with was a solo shot in the 7th by Eric Davis. Dark Valley wins game #5 by a 12-1 score, and are 1 game away from advancing to the GT conference finals to face the Traffic. But they will have to do it on the road, as the series reverts back to Hollywood for the final games. DESTINIES LEAD 3-2. GAME SIX -- Destinies (Walk) at Stars (Hurst) The series resumed at Hollywood for the final games of the season. Hollywood would need to win this one to force a game seven. In the bottom of the first, Andy Van Slyke doubled and scored on a John Kruk single. In the top of the 2nd, Bruce Hurst plunked Howard Johnson, who didn't like it too much. The two got into a brawl, and both were ejected. In the top of the 4th, Stars reliever Tim Stoddard threw a wild pitch with Jim Dwyer at third (who curiously was playing third base in place of Johnson), which allowed Dwyer to score and even the game at 1 all. In the bottom of the 4th, the Destinies loaded the bases with Stars and 0 outs. Mike Scioscia hit an RBI single. Cal Ripken tried to score from 2nd, but was thrown out at home. 2-1 Hollywood. Mike Easler and Andy Van Slyke hit RBI singles to add to the Stars' lead. 4-1 in the 4th. In the 6th, Barry Lyons hit an RBI single to score Darryl Strawberry. 4-2 Stars. In the top of the 5th, Jim Dwyer struck out, and didn't like the call. He complained too much to the ump, who threw him out of the game. That was the *2nd* Destinies 3rd baseman to get ejected this game. The game would remain 4-2 going into the top of the 9th. Dan Plesac was on the mound pitching for Hollywood. Terry Harper was the first batter up, who grounded out to Bill Pecota. Barry Lyons popped out to first base. 2 outs. The Destinies need to score 2 runs to tie, and they were down to their last out. The next batter up was Larry Parrish, who walked. Willie Randolph hit an infield single. 2 on, 2 out, 2 runs down. Dave Conception was next. He hit a fly ball to Marvell Wynne, who was playing in place of Eric Davis today ... and bobbled the ball. That let Larry Parrish score, and narrow the lead to 1. The next batter up was Jack Clark, who made Wynne pay dearly for his error. Clark smashes the ball, which went back ... back ... back ... and over the wall! Clark bashes a 3 run homer, giving Dark Valley the 6-4 lead, 4 runs being unearned. It was now the bottom of the 9th, and the Stars needed 2 runs, and were facing the end of their season. Craig Lefferts was trying to close out the game for the Destinies. Andy Van Slyke started things off with a 0 out double. Bill Pecota singled, moving batters to 1st and 3rd. Lefferts exited the game, and it was now up to Ken Schrom to get 3 outs. The next batter was Juan Samuel, who singled, scoring Van Slyke. The Destinies' lead was now just a single run. And there were still 0 outs, with 2 runners on base. The next batter was Dave Magadan, who hit into a double play. There were now 2 outs, but Bill Pecota was in scoring position at 3rd. Willie Upshaw was up. A single would tie up the game, a homer would win it. But it was not to be. Upshaw flied out, ending the game and the series. Dark Valley makes a dramatic comeback to win game six by a 6-5 score, and will move on to face the San Mateo Traffic in the GT conference finals. DESTINIES WIN 4-2.
