Clark was a sabrmetric monster, posting a .448 on base average and a .688 slugging average. His 142 runs scored was a new league record. 1987 CDBL MVP 1ST RUNNER UP: Mark McGwire - 1B - Missouri Mules Total AVG OBP SPC G AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI BB K HB IW SB CS Play% DMB .303 .383 .685 162 631 191 33 5 66 120 174 83 139 2 5 0 3 112 What a rookie season. McGwire mere shattered the home run and RBI records, while posting a .685 slugging percentage. McGwire's RBI were almost double that of the nearest teammate. 1987 CDBL MVP: Wade Boggs - 3B - Arkham Investigators Total AVG OBP SPC G AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI BB K HB IW SB CS Play% DMB .349 .437 .574 162 645 225 42 8 29 135 130 105 49 1 11 0 0 115 Boggs moved from the leadoff spot to the #3 spot this year for Arkham and it paid off big-time. Boggs hit .349 with a .437 on base average, 42 doubles and 29 homers, along with 135 runs scored and 130 RBI's. But more importantly, he "made his teammates better". Boggs gets the MVP because of his effect on the other Arkham hitters. Think George Bell would have gotten 172 RBI if Boggs wasn't always parked at first? ******************************************************************* FIREMAN OF THE YEAR: 1987 FOTY 2ND RUNNER UP: Dewayne Buice - Dewey Beach Lush Total ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Play% DMB 2.22 4 5 26 92 0 0 0 113.2 93 29 28 47 88 466 6 2 12 102 Buice was picked up in the 2nd round and immediately became the Lush's closer. In a year where the Lush managed to lose the pennant despite the bevy of all-stars, they couldn't blame it on him. Buice posted a low 2.22 ERA with 26 saves, and soaked up lots of innings, putting in 113 2/3. 1987 FOTY 1ST RUNNER UP: Dave Smith - Hurdlers Total ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Play% DMB 1.74 2 5 29 47 0 0 0 51.2 48 15 10 14 64 217 0 2 2 91 What more can you ask of a closer? Smith posted a low 1.74 ERA and saved 29 games. 1987 FIREMAN OF THE YEAR: Tim Burke - Fargo Flames Total ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Play% DMB 0.73 9 0 40 64 0 0 0 74.0 56 6 6 5 38 273 2 0 9 77 What can you say about a player that had such a dominant season that they were almost single-handedly responsible for winning a pennant? Burke was untouchable this year, posting a microscopic 0.73 ERA (6 earned runs for the *season*, fewer that some pitchers gave up in a game!), saved a league record 40 saves, and went 9-0. Burke was largely responsible for the Flames being the best close-game team this year, if not of all time. Fargo was 68-3 after leading 7 innings, 16-6 when tied after 7, 39-14 in 1 run games, and 12-4 in extra innings. Burke can pretty much guarantee winning the Fargo mayoral election when he retires. ************************************************************************* 1987 CY YOUNG 1987 CY YOUNG 2ND RUNNER UP: Rick Reuschel - Milwaukee Mashers Total ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Play% DMB 3.25 18 7 0 34 34 10 2 241.0 228 105 87 56 105 994 16 10 22 110 Reuschel was an ace among aces. Rick posted 10 complete games, 241 innings pitched and an 18-7 record for the pennant winning Mashers. 1987 CY YOUNG 1ST RUNNER UP: Don Carman - Hollywood Stars Total ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Play% DMB 3.44 20 7 0 33 33 3 3 227.1 197 93 87 71 147 943 32 2 11 106 It's easy getting wins when you have Jack Clark and Darryl Strawberry on your team, but it's even easier when you've got Don Carman on the mound. Carman posted a 3.44 ERA and his 20-7 record is one of only 2 20-win season this year. 1987 CY YOUNG: Jimmy Key - San Mateo Traffic Total ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Play% DMB 2.77 22 6 0 42 41 7 3 289.2 230 104 89 63 167 1137 27 8 28 110 Key was robo-Cy this year. Key had the best record in the majors at 22-7, and he earned every victory. His 2.77 ERA was 2nd lowest in the league, while his 289 2/3 innings were the most by a fairly wide margin. The Traffic had lots of sluggers to help them to the pennant and the best overall record in the league, but they wouldn't have been able to do it without the dominant year of Jimmy Key.
