1987 CDBL Playoff Preview Milwaukee Mashers (97-65) vs. Arkham Investigators (96-66) How's that for a stinger? The Investigators at one point had the best record in the league, and led their division for much of the 2nd half until the last week of the regular season. They went on a 3-game losing streak to drop them not only out of the Aaron division pennant but out of the conference wildcard spot as well. Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Mashers traded off the division lead with Arkham throughout the season, and finished up strong to wrest the pennant crown away. They now get to face each other in the first round of the playoffs. The Investigators had the best hitting lineup in the league. George Bell was an RBI machine, knocking in 172 runs while scoring 134 of his own. Wade Boggs posted a .437 on base average, .574 slugging percentage and 130+ runs and RBI. Kirk Gibson scored 97 runs, while catcher Alan Ashby slugged .480 with 84 runs scored. On the pitching side, Ron Darling was the staff ace, going 16-5 with a 3.31 ERA. Tom Henke was the team leader in saves with 23. The Milwaukee Mashers are no strangers to victory, having been the 1985 CDBL champs. Longtime franchise player Rickey Henderson had injury problems this year, but that didn't hurt his run production (88 runs scored in only 352 at bats). The duo of Alan Trammell (22 homers, 117 runs scored, 128 RBI) and 1985 triple crown winner Pedro Guerrero (.336 avg, 32 homers, 124 RBI) drove in all the runs. 3B Brook Jacoby was a key pickup during mid-season, scoring 41 runs and slugging .482 in his 52 games with the Mashers. Rick Reuschel, Frank Tanana and Frank Viola dominated the league this year, going a combined 48-23 with ERA's under 3.5. Andy McGaffigan saved 21 games with a 2.30 ERA> Milwaukee won the season series 7-5, and have home field advantage. GAME ONE - Investigators (Darling) at Mashers (Reuschel) Something must be in the water, because this series has started off with a bang. Alan Ashby was the first batter to put himself up on the board, hitting a solo shot in the 1st for the quick Arkahm lead. But wait, there's more! With Wade Boggs on board, Ken Phelps hits a 2-run tater. Randy Ready would single and be driven in by Steve Jeltz to make it a 4-run Arkham 1st inning. In the bottom of the 3rd, Alvin Davis walked in a bases loaded situation, forcing in Jack Howell. 4-1 Arkham. Arkham and Milwaukee would trade more (many more) runs in the 4th & 5th innings to make it a 8-5 Investigators lead by the 6th inning. In the bottom of the 6th, Alvin Davis hit a fly ball to George Bell, who dropped it. Pedro Guerrero singled to drive in Davis, making it 8-6. In the top of the 7th, with Boggs on 1st, George Bell got his revenge, hitting a fly ball to Mookie Wilson, who dropped it to give Arkham runners at 1st & 3rd. Ken Phelps drove them both in with a single. 10-6 Arkham. But Milwaukee just wouldn't give up. In the bottom of the 7th, Bob Melvin crushed a solo dinger out of the park to cut the lead to 3. In the bottom of the 8th, Joel Youngblood hit a sacrifice fly to score Alvin Davis from 3rd. The lead was cut to 2. A Fred Manrique single scored Pedro Guerrero, and the lead was just a single run. Arkham closer Tom Henke was brought on board to stop the pain, and had runners on 1st & 2nd with 1 out. Alvin Hall was the first batter up for Henke, who flew out. With 2 outs in the 8th inning, Ellis Burks struck out to end the inning. In the top of the 9th, Wade Boggs hit a solo home run, giving him 4 runs scored for the game and an 11-9 lead for the Investigators. In the bottom of the 9th, Milwaukee needed to overcome a 2 run deficit. The good news is they were at the top of the order. The bad news is that Tom Henke was still pitching. The first batter up, Rickey Henderson, walked. Alan Trammel could tie it up with a homer, but struck out. 1 out. Alvin Davis could tie it up with a homer, but nearly hit into a double play instead, getting Rickey thrown out at second. 2 outs. Pedro Guerrero up to bat. A homer would tie it up, but it was not to be. Guerrero strikes out, ending the game and giving Arkham the 11-9 victory. INVESTIGATORS LEAD 1-0. GAME TWO -- Investigators (Forsch) at Mashers (Alexander) Round 2. Arkham put themselves on the board in the 2nd, with a Steve "you can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him" Jeltz RBI single. Milwaukee answered in the bottom of the 2nd with "authoritah". With runners at 2nd & 3rd, Jack Howell puts the Mashers on the board with an RBI single. Then Mike Lavalliere scores Mookie from 3rd to get the lead. The Mashers load up the bases (this is still in the 2nd!), and Rickey Henderson hits a 2 RBI single. 4-1 Milwaukee, and Bob Forsch gets pulled after 1 1/3 innings. The pain isn't over for Arkham, as Doyle Alexander scores on an error by Wade Boggs, and Alvin Davis hits a sacrifice fly for the 6 run Milwaukee inning. Milwaukee and Arkham would trade a few runs, but going into the 9th inning, Milwaukee would have a commanding 10-3 lead. In the bottom of the 9th, the Investigators had to make up 7 runs to win it. Doyle Alexander leaves the game in the 9th after putting 2 runners on, and Mark Williamson was on board to close out the game for Milwaukee. Williamson faces George Bell. Not good. Bell hits the ball over the wall, scoring 3 runs and make it a 10-6 game. After putting 2 more runners on base, Williamson exits the game (0 outs recorded) and Andy McGaffigan looks to save the day. There are still 0 outs. McGaffigan gives up a single to Alfredo Griffen to load the bases. 0 outs. Steve "Superman" Jeltz hits an RBI single to score Kirk Gibson. 10-7. PH Luis Salazar hits into a fielder's choice, which lets another run score. 10-8, with 1 out. Dennis Martinez flies out for out #2. Alan Ashby walks to reload the bases. Bases loaded, 2 outs, Arkham down by 2, and Wade Boggs is up to bat. Boggs was phenomenal in game #1, but didn't have a very good game #2. Boggs pops out, ending the game. Milwaukee wins game #2 by a score of 10-8, and tie up the series. The next 3 games will be played at Arkham. SERIES TIED 1-1. GAME THREE -- Mashers (Viola) at Investigators (Puleo) A very long game. The Investigators put themselves on the board in the 2nd on RBI singles by Rafael Ramirez and Kirk Gibson. Arkham made it 3-0 in the 5th on an RBI single by Wade Boggs. But the Mashers tied it all up in a single swing in the 6th on a 3-run home run by Jack Howell. With the game tied at 3, neither team could get anything done in the 9th inning, which meant .. extra innings! The first team with a shot at scoring were the Investigators in the bottom of the 10th. With Andy McGaffigan pitching for Milwaukee, Kirk Gibson hit a bunt single (aren't his knees supposed to be giving out one of these years??) with 0 outs. John Cangelosi grounds out, but moves Gibson to 2nd. 1 out and a man in game-winning scoring position. Wade Boggs gets the intentional walk to bring Randy Ready up to the plate. Ready flies out, making 2 outs. George Bell could have won the game with a single, but struck out to end the inning. The top of the 11th would give Milwaukee the chance to pull ahead. With Tom Henke on the mound for Arkham, Mookie Wilson and Brook Jacoby both singled, putting runners at 1st & 3rd with 0 outs. Fred Manrique hits a shallow fly out, preventing the runner from scoring. Bob Melvin struck out for out #2. And Joel Youngblood struck out to end the inning. The Investigators would have another shot in the bottom of the 12th inning. Bobby Thigpen was pitching for the Mashers, and got Gibson to fly out for out #1. John Cangelosi walked and Wade Boggs singled to put 2 runners on board. Randy Ready grounds to Jacoby, who starts the double play .. and throws it away at 2nd! 1 out, and the bases are loaded. George "RBI Machine" Bell is up, but doesn't seize the day. Bell strikes out for out #2. Carmelo Martinez flies out to end the inning, destroying the run scoring potential of a bases loaded situation. We now move to the top of the 14th, and Arkham is on their 5th pitcher of the game, Randy St. Claire. Bob Melvin breaks the deadlock in a hurry, banging a solo shot for the 4-3 Milwaukee lead. Alan Trammell singled, stole 2nd, and scored on Alvin Davis' single. Dorn Taylor comes on to pitch, but it doesn't help, as Pedro Guerrero hits a 2 run homer. 7-3 Milwaukee. In the bottom of the 14th, Wade Boggs hit a solo shot, but that's all she wrote. Milwaukee wins a long one, 7-4, in 14 innings. MASHERS LEAD 2-1. In the bottom of the 4th, with Boggs on first, Carmelo Martinez hit a double. Boggs tried to score, but the throw comes from the outfield to Trammell the relay man, who throws it to Bob Melvin in time for the tagout. 1-0 Milwaukee still. In the top of the 9th, Brook Jacoby hits a solo shot for the 2-0 game. It was up to Arkham to score at least 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th, with Andy McGaffigan on the mound. John Cangelosi gets a walk, but Wade Bogs grounds into a momentum-killing double play. Randy Ready hits a grounder to Fred Manrique for the final out ... or is it?! Manrique throws it away, putting Ready at 2nd for a 2-base error. George Bell is up to hit, but can't get it done. Bell flies out, ending the game. GAME FIVE -- Mashers (Reuschel) at Investigators (Darling) Arkham had to win this one or their season was over. The Mashers were intent to blow them out early. In the 2nd inning, with runners at 2nd & 3rd, Mike Lavalliere grounded out, but a runner scored anyways. The Mashers proceeded to load the bases, and with 2 outs, Alvin Davis hit a single, scoring 2 more runs for a 3-0 lead in the 2nd. In the 3rd inning, Arkham scored their first run of the game on a Wade Boggs sacrifice fly. In the 6th, Boggs doubled, moved to 3rd on a Gibson sac fly, and scored when Rick Reuschel threw a wild pitch. Boggs scored yet again in the 8th on a double by Alfredo Griffen. The score would remain at 3-all through 9 innings, so the game would go to extra innings for the 2nd time this series. Milwaukee broke the tie in the 11th. With Tom Henke pitching for Arkham, Alvin Hall grounded out for out #1. Mike Lavalliere singled. Fred Manrique flied out for out #2. Brook Jacoby singled. Gene Nelson came on in relief. A wild pitch would move the runners to 2nd & 3rd, and a Trammell double would knock both runners in. 5-3 Milwaukee. Bobby Thigpen was on the mount in the bottom of the 11th to close out the game and send Milwaukee to the conference finals. The first batter, Randy Ready, walked. Steve Lake struck out for out #1. Dave Martinez singled. Alan Ashby struck out for out #1. Wade Boggs singled, loading the bases with 2 outs. Next up to bat was George Bell. Bell really needed to come through here, or else there was no more season. The team was down by 2 runs, and had only 1 more out. So did George Bell choke and let his team down? No! Bell knocked the stuffing out of the ball, sending it racing over the infielders ... over the outfielders ... to the warning track ... and over the wall. Grand slam! Bell is the hero of the day, hitting a game winning grand slam in front of the home crowd, winning the game for Arkham by a score of 7-5. Arkham lives to fight another day. MASHERS LEAD 3-2. In the top of the first, Wade Boggs walked, and George Bell hit a 2-run homer for the quick 2-0 lead. Milwaukee scored a run in the 2nd on a Jacoby single. Alan Ashby smacked a 2-run homer in the 5th, but an Alvin Davis RBI single in the 6th followed by a Pedro Guerrero 2 run homer tie things up a 4 all. Milwaukee took the lead in the 7th on a Jack Howell homer. 5-4. The Investigators went into the top of the 9th still down by a run. Their season had suddenly shortened to 3 outs. Andy McGaffigan was on the mound to close things out for the Mashers. Alfredo Griffen hit a 0 out single. But Dave Martinez hit into a double play, instantly clearing the bases and giving Arkham just 1 more out to score at least a run. Alan Asbhy gets the 2 out walk, and is replaced by pinch runner John Cangelosi. Mark Williamson comes on board to replace McGaffigan. Wade Boggs singles, putting runners at 1st & 2nd. George Bell is up next and hits a single to deep left field. Cangelosi rounds 3rd, and is intent on scoring. Rickey Henderson throws the ball to the catcher, but Lavalliere doesn't make the tag in time. Cangelosi scores, and the game is tied. The Investigators would break the tie in the 11th. Alfredo Griffen hit a 0 out double. Dave Martinez singled, moving Griffen to 3rd. A Ralph Bryant singled, scoring Griffen from 3rd. Tom Henke was on the mound in the bottom of the 11th to try and preserve the lead. And preserve it he did. Alvin Davis flied out, and Walling and Youngblood struck out, ending the game. Arkham comes back in the 9th and 11th innings to take game six by a 6-5 margin, and force a game seven for all the marbles. SERIES TIED 3-3. GAME SEVEN -- Investigators (Puleo) at Mashers (Viola) These two teams battled throughout the season and into the playoffs. Today's game would settle it once and for all. In the 1st inning, with Arkham's John Cangelosi at first, Wade Boggs hits a DP ball to Jack Howell, who throws it to 2nd ... but gets left field instead. Randy Ready drives Cangelosi in with a single. Milwaukee tied things up in the 4th with a solo dinger. 1-all. In the 5th inning, Kirk Gibson singled, stole 2nd, and scored on a Cangelosi single. Boggs drove Cangelosi and himself home with a 2-run shot. 4-1 Arkham. Milwaukee narrowed the lead in the 6th with a 2-run blast by Mookie Wilson. In the 8th & 9th innings, Arkham lengthened their lead on RBI singles by Lake, Ramirez and Griffen. 7-3 Arkham going into the bottom of the 9th. Milwaukee was once up 3-1 in this series, and now were down 4 runs with only 3 outs. Jerry Gleaton was on the mound for Arkham. Alan Trammell struck out for out #1. Rick Schu blasted a solo shot. 7-4 Arkham. Tom Henke came on board. Pedro Guerrero hit a double. Mookie Wilson drove him in on a single. 7-5. Brook Jacoby tripled, driving in Wilson. 7-6. The lead was quickly evaporating. Jack Howell singled in Jacoby. We had a tie ballgame, and Milwaukee still had 2 outs. Gene Nelson came on board to relieve Henke. Lavalliere and O'Neill would pop out to end the inning. For the 4th time this series, we would go to extra innings. In the top of the 12th, Arkham made their move. Steve Jeltz walked, brining up Randy St. Claire. St. Claire was a pretty decent batter in the regular season, but the most power he showed was a double. Not today. St. Claire must have been taking batting lessons from George Bell, because St. Claire caught all of a Bobby Thigpen pitch, sending it over the wall for the 9-7 Arkahm lead. Henry Cotto hit a solo homer to give Arkahm the 10-7 lead. Milwaukee would have to overcome yet another lead. But Randy St. Claire would have none of it. Bruce Bochy struck out, Fred Manrique grounded out, and Rickey Henderson popped out, ending the game and the series. Arkham wins a tight one, 10-7, and comes back from a 3-1 series deficit to win the series in 7. Arkham advances to the AP conference finals. INVESTIGATORS WIN 4-3.
