1987 CDBL PLAYOFFS PREVIEW WORLD SERIES ARKHAM INVESTIGATORS (4-3 vs Mashers, 4-2 vs Flames) vs. SAN MATEO TRAFFIC (4-1 vs. Destinies) This is it. The season has been reduced to two teams. GAME THREE -- Traffic (Cox) at Investigators (Puleo) The Investigators were determined to make this a series. Dave Martinez was certainly determined, hitting a leadoff homer against Danny Cox. 1-0 Arkham in the 1st. In the top of the 2nd, Traffic hitters loaded the bases. Tony Fernandez rectified part of that situation, hitting a 2-RBI single, giving San Mateo the lead. The next batter, Jerry Mumphrey, completed the effective grand slam, smacking a 2-RBI triple. 4-1 Traffic. Kirk Gibson wasn't about to give up the fight just yet. In the 4th, Gibson hit a solo shot to narrow the lead to 2. Then in the 6th, with The "B Boys", Boggs and Bell on base, Gibson hit a 2 RBI double, tying the game at 4. Two batters later, Randy Ready put the Investigators ahead with a 2 RBI triple. 6-4 Arkham. The Traffic loaded the bases yet again in the 8th, with just 1 out. Tom Henke was on the mound. Tony Fernandez walked, forcing in a run and making it a 6-5 game. But Jerry Mumphrey struck out and Kirby Puckett flied out to kill the rally. Henke remained on in the 9th and got the save. Arkam wins game three by a score of 6-5. TRAFFIC LEADS 2-1. GAME FOUR -- Traffic (Palmer) at Investigators (Black) The Traffic were looking to put Arkham to the edge of elimination in game three. Dave Valle got off to a good start, hitting a 2-run shot in the 2nd for the San Mateo lead. In the top of the 3rd, with 2 on, Kirby "the man" Puckett hit a 2-RBI double. Jose Canseco singled in another run. Cecil Fielder hit into a fielder's choice, but it scored yet another run. 6-0 Traffic. In the 5th, the Investigators had a chance, loading the bases with 1 out with Wade Boggs up at bat. But Boggs hit into a double play, ending the inning with no runs scored. The Investigators simply had to wait another inning to put runs up on the board. And it all started with Kirk Gibson, who has been king clutch this series. Gibson got things moving with a 2-run shot. Alfredo Griffen hit an RBI triple, and Ralph Bryant drove him in with a single. 6-4 San Mateo. The Traffic added to their lead in the 7th on a Canseco single and Tim Wallach sacrifice fly. 8-4 Traffic. Yet for this game Arkham wouldn't give up. In the bottom of the 7th, George Bell took a ball out of the park. Lead down to 3. Alfredo Griffen got an infield hit, scoring another run. Lead down to 2. Mark Eichhorn comes on board for the Traffic to stop the pain. With 2 on, and Henry Cotto on the mound, what happens? Cotto goes deep. Once down by 6 runs, the Investigators score 9 runs in 2 innings to go up 9 to 8. In the top of the 9th, with a runner on base, Tom Henke gets Tim Wallach to fly out, ending the game. Arkahm comes back big, winning game four and evening up the series. SERIES TIED 2-2. GAME FIVE -- Traffic (Key) at Investigators (Darling) The unstoppable force (ace Jimmy Key) vs. the immovable object (Arkham's home field). In the first, Jerry Mumphrey tripled and scored when Kirby Puckett hit into a fielder's choice. Carmelo Martinez evened it up in the 2nd with a solo shot. In the top of the 3rd, Ozzie Virgil came up to the plate with the bases loaded. Virgil didn't disappoint, hitting a 2-RBI single for the 3-1 Traffic lead. A Tony Fernandez double in the 4th would extend the lead by a run. The Traffic would score yet again in the 7th with an RBI single from Kirby Puckett. Jimmy Key was masterful in this game, giving up only 4 hits and 1 earned run. To add insult to injury, in the top of the 9th, with the bases loaded, Ozzie Virgil bashed a grand slam. 9-1 Traffic. Jimmy Key wound up with a 1-run complete game, winning his 4th game of the post-season. The Traffic are now 1 game away from winning the 1987 CDBL world series. TRAFFIC LEADS 3-2. GAME SIX -- Investigators (Forsch) at Traffic (Ryan) Do or die time for Arkham. A win would go to a decisive game seven, a loss would end the series. In the bottom of the first, with runners at first and second, Dave Parker hit an RBI single. In the 5th, with a runner on first, Kirby Puckett took Bob Forsch deep, bashing his 5th homer of the post-season. Following Puckett was a back-to-back homer by Tim Wallach, delighting the home crowd. 4-0 Traffic in the 5th. In the 8th, Ozzie Virgil hit a solo shot. 5-0. Nolan Ryan went though 115 pitches in only 6 innings, but he didn't give up a run and struck out 11. In the 9th inning, Ken Daley was on the mound with a 5 run lead. First batter up, Alfredo Griffen, flied out. The next batter, Rafael Ramirez, flied out. The last batter, pinch hitter Henry Cotto, flied out to Jose Canseco. And that's all for 1987. The San Mateo Traffic defeat the Arkham Investigators 5-0 and win the CDBL world series 4 games to 2. Arkham put up a heck of a fight, but will have to settle for the MK conference title. TRAFFIC WINS 4-2, 1987 CDBL WORLD CHAMPS! PLAYOFF MVP: A lot of candidates to choose from. Arkham's George Bell finished with 6 dingers, 14 runs scored and 21 RBI, while Wade Boggs finished with 18 runs scored. For the champs, Kirby Puckett hit .347 with 5 homers, 17 runs scored and 19 RBI. But the playoff MVP goes to Traffic ace Jimmy Key, who was the definition of dominant. 4 starts, 4 wins, 3 complete games (and the other was 8 1/3 innings). 1.53 ERA.
