1987 CDBL PLAYOFFS PREVIEW Fargo Flames (96-66) vs. Elk Grove Trout (96-66) What happens when an unstoppable force (Will Clark & Tony Gwynn) take on an immoveable object (Tim Burke)? We're about to find out in this AP conference battle. The Elk Grove Trout were always in the mix in the Aaron division, and finished a solid 2nd. Much of this could be attributed to the tandem of Tony Gwynn (.357 avg, 141 runs scored, 63 stolen bases) and Will "the Thrill" Clark (.539 slugging, 34 homers, 153 RBI's). The Trout also had one of the league's best double play duos with 2B Lou Whitaker (.377 OBP, 91 RBI's) and SS Julio Franco (88 runs scored, .378 OBP). Sid Fernandez and Dennis Martinez were the leading pitchers for Elk Grove, winning a combined 30 games with ERA's under 3.60. Closing duties were shared by Pat Perry and Mike Henneman, who saved 20 games each. The Fargo Flames were the underdogs in the Paige division, competing against the all-star packed Dewey Beach Lush. Yet Fargo prevailed, capturing their first ever pennant. Mike Schmidt is the heart and soul of the lineup, slugging .520 with 35 homers, 97 runs scored and 106 RBI's. In mid-season the Flames brought in additional firepower in the form of Dale Murphy. Murphy posted an .892 OPS while driving in 39 RBI's in 54 games. Murphy finished the season with 49 homers, 121 runs scored and 122 runs driven in. But the Flames were 39-14 in 1 run games, 12-4 in extra innings, and an incredible 84-9 when leading or tied after the 7th inning. Why, you say? Because of Tim Burke, who put in the league's most dominant relief effort ever. Burke saved a league record 40 games, went 9-0, and put up a 0.73 ERA. When Burke was in the game, it was an assured win. The Trout won the season series 5-3, but Fargo has home field advantage. They key for Elk Grove is to blow out Fargo large and early, as Fargo are kings of the close game. GAME ONE -- Trout (Martinez) at Flames (Dunne) Opening game of this AP conference round 1 battle. The first batter didn't score until the 4th, when Dwayne Murphy scored on a triple by Tony Gwynn. Gwynn would himself score in the 4th on a Lou Whitaker sacrifice fly. Will Clark hit a solo shot in the 7th for the 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, the Flames had a shot at putting some runs on the board when they loaded the bases with 0 outs. Dennis Martinez was still on the mound, and Brian Downing was at bat. Downing hit a sacrifice fly, scoring a run and moving another batter to 3rd. But Marty Barrett and Dale Murphy popped out to end the inning. 3-1 Elk Grove. In the bottom of the 8th, with runners at 1st & 3rd, Jim Rice hit a sacrifice fly to narrow the game to 1 run. It came down to the bottom of the 9th for Fargo to try and win it, but it was not to be. Trout closer Mike Henneman retired the batters 1-2-3, as Elk Grove win a close one 3-2. TROUT LEADS 1-0. GAME TWO -- Trout (Fernandez) at Flames (Clancy) The Flames lost game #1, and they started off in a bad way in game #2. Jim Clancy loaded the bases with 0 outs, and Will Clark drove in the first couple runs with a 2 RBI double. Then, Bob Brenley bashed a 3-run homer. Instant 5-0 game, and Jim Clancy had yet to record an out. In the bottom of the 1st, the Flames tried to salvage the game. Dale Murphy hit an RBI single and Galarraga hit into a fielder's choice, allowing another run to score. 5-2 Elk Grove. Will Clark drove in another run in the 2nd when he grounded into a fielder's choice. Jim Clancy lasted 1 1/3 innings, giving up 6 runs, 5 of them earned. In the 3rd, Marty Barrett tripled, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dale Murphy. Elk Grove scored again in the 4th to make it a 7-3 game. Then, the sky cleared, the birds started to sing, and the air had a whole new smell to the Fargo fans. Tim Burke appeared in the 5th inning. Burke was his usual stellar self, throwing 2 innings of 1 hit, no score ball. With Burke blanking out the Trout in the top half of the inning, the Fargo hitters went to work in the bottom of the 5th. Schmidt hit a 2 RBI double. 7-5 Trout. 2 more runners got on base, and Gary Redus hit a 3-run homer to give Fargo the 8-7 lead. All this with 0 outs. Downing hit an RBI single, scoring Mariano Duncan from 3rd (who moved there from first via 2 balks!) Dale Murphy hits a single to the outfield, scoring 1 run. Dwayne Murphy tries to throw the ball back to the catcher, but it sails over Brenley's head, letting another run score. Mike Schmidt came back around in the order to hit an RBI single. Fargo blasts out 9 runs in the 5th to take a 12-7 lead. Elk Grove never recovered. Tim Burke gets the win as Fargo evens up the series by a final score of 13-7. SERIES TIED 1-1.
