1986 CDBL PLAYOFFS PREVIEW ROUND 1 - San Mateo Traffic (92-70) vs. Topeka Stingers (96-66) Battle of Gehrig division titans. The Topeka Stingers had been 2nd in the division for most of the season, but poured it on to take the Gehrig division pennant in the final days of the season. So how did they do it? A little bit of this, a little bit of that. The team ERA was 3.32, which was above average. Charlie Leibrandt was the workhorse of the team, starting 41 games, pitching 275 innings, and winning 17 games with a 2.94 ERA. Don Sutton and Kevin Gross won a combined 27 games while pitching a combined 450 innings. Bobby Ojeda was a late addition to the team via trade, and performed well, going 2-1 over 5 starts with a 2.12 ERA. Closer duties were split between always dependable Dave Righetti (10-2, 21 saves) and Don Aase (7 wins, 23 saves). On the hitting side, it was all Donnie Baseball. Don Mattingly led the team in doubles (60, a league record), and RBI (108). Kevin Bass scored 98 runs and stole 27 bases. The Traffic were picked in the pre-season to be the league monster, but that didn't quite come true. Still, San Mateo made the playoffs, finishing 3rd in the division with 92 wins. The Traffic made their wins this year with pitching. The team ERA was 3.09, tied for best in the league. A big part of that was super-reliever Mark Eichhorn, who set a league record for ERA despite not starting any games. Thanks to his numerous pitching opportunities (a league leading 96) and long # of innings per appearance, Eichhorn logged 172 2/3 innings, good enough for 4th best on the team, and let Eichhorn win 13 games and save 24. Rob Murphy also shared closer duties, saving 12 games with a microscopic 0.59 ERA. Oh yeah, they have starters too. Ace Danny Cox won 17 games with a 2.70 ERA, Jimmy Key and Nolan Ryan combined for 25 wins. On the hitting side, this was the year that the youngsters took over. Kirby Puckett was the team leader in runs scored with 105, while Jose Canseco was the team leader in homers and RBI (27 and 79 respectively, although with only a .204 batting and .391 slugging percentage). Canseco's rather underwhelming season probably cost San Mateo a shot at the pennant. SS Tony Fernandez scored 81 runs with 29 stolen bases. Both teams have top-rated pitching staffs, so expect a low-scoring series between these two. The Stingers won the regular season series 6 games to 4. Topeka has home field advantange. **************************************************************************** 1986 CDBL PLAYOFFS Round 1 - San Mateo Traffic (Cox) at Topeka Stingers (Ojeda) GAME ONE -- A very quick start to the game. Bobby Ojeda facing the first batter of the series, Tony Bernazard, in the 1st inning, no outs, 1st pitch.. and Bernazard smacks it out of the park. Uh-oh. Topeka would quickly come back. In the 2nd inning, the Stingers tied things up on an Ernie Whitt RBI single. Kevin Bass put Topeka in the lead in the 3rd with an RBI double. Ernie Whitt came through again in the 4th, hitting a solo shot. 3-1 Topeka. San Mateo closed the gap in the 6th with an RBI triple from Tony Fernandez. Ernie Whitt padded the Stingers' lead in the 8th with another solo homer shot. Don Aase gets 3 quick outs in the 9th to save game 1 for the Stingers, who win it by a score of 4-2. STINGERS LEAD 1-0. Nobody scored a run until the bottom of the 4th, when George Brett broke up Nolan Ryan's no-hit bid with a homer (needless to say, there went the shutout too). Topkea padded their lead in the 5th on a Kevin Bass RBI single and a score from Vince Coleman from 3rd base on a fielde's choice. 3-0 Topkea. Then the big inning happened. Top of the 6th. It started out innocently enough. Ray Knight singled, scoring Kirby Puckett from 3rd with 0 outs. Still with 0 outs, and 2 runners on board, Tony Phillips hit an RBI double. 3-2 Topeka. At this point, Chuck Leibrandt was done for the day. On came Odell Jones, who loaded the bases. Pinch hitter Scott Bradley hit a 2 RBI double, giving San Mateo their first lead of the game, 4-3. Pinch hitter Dale Valle came up to the plate, and proceeded to hit a 3-run blast. 7-3 Traffic. Jones would be done for the day, and on came Rick Aguilera. Bob Horner hit a 2-out double, 8-3 Traffic. A balk by Aguilera capped the inning, scoring Ray Knight from 3rd base. A 9 inning 6th inning. The relievers for both teams settled down after that, and no more runs were scored. San Mateo wins game 2 by a score of 9-3, and take home field advantage in the playoffs. SERIES TIED 1-1. Briant Dayett would get an RBI double in the bottom of the 8th, but that was all she wrote. Topeka's Don Aase finished out the 9th in style, getting 3 outs via 3 K's. San Mateo jumped to the 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when Scott Bradley drove in a run in a bases loaded situation. Topeka tied it right up in the 2nd when the Traffic' Tony Bernazard boots a grounder, letting Mike Young score from 3rd. San Mateo broke the deadlock in the bottom of the 2nd, when Tony Phillips hit a 2-RBI single. Things settled down until the 6th inning, when Topeka faced their moment of truth. With 0 outs, Traffic starter Jimmy Key found himself in a bases loaded situation. Up first was Vince Coleman .. and Vince Coleman was the first one down via strikeout. Ruben Sierra was up next. Kevin Bass would later score in the 1st on a Don Mattingly single for a quick 2-0 Stingers lead. Topeka would continue to have their way with the Traffic, scoring runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings for a 5-0 game. San Mateo couldn't get anything going until the bottom of the 9th, and they had a 5 run deficit to overcome. Bobby Ojeda was still on the mound for the Stingers, and found himself with 2 runners on base, 0 outs, and Tony Fernandez at bat. Ojeda was aiming for the shutout, but it didn't happen. Fernandez hit a 2-RBI single, sending Ojeda to the showers and making the Stingers lead at just 3 runs. Odell Jones came on board, and got Ozzie Virgil to hit into a double play, making the bases empty with 2 outs. Fred Lynn grounded out to end the game. Topeka wins game five by a score of 5-2, and are one game away from the GT conference finals. STINGERS LEAD 3-2. That's what came to the mind of Traffic outfielder Tony Phillips in the 2nd. Phillips got plunked on the arm by Stingers pitcher Charlie Leibrandt, and responded by charging the mound and beating the daylights out of him. Both Phillips and Leibrandt were ejected from the game. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Stingers scored the first runs of the game. First, an RBI triple by Ernie Whitt, and later Whitt scored from 3rd on an RBI single by Ruben Sierra. San Mateo put their first run up in the 5th. Tony Bernazard was on 2nd, and with 2 outs, Rick Aguilera (pitching since Leibrandt got ejected) intentionally walked Kirby Puckett to face Ray Knight. Knight singled, scoring Bernazard from 2nd. 2-1 Topeka. Topeka added to their lead in the 6th, with Kevin Bass scoring from 3rd base on a George Brett single. The Stingers continued to score in the 7th, when Bass and Brett drove in two more runs on RBI singles. 5-1 Topeka. In the top of the 9th, San Mateo needed to score 4 runs to keep in the game, and had to do it facing Stingers closer Don Aase. Fred Lynn flied out for out #1. Jose Canseco singled (only his 3rd hit in 16 at bats). Tony Fernandez came up to bat next, and hit a strong grounder to George Brett. Brett threw to 2nd base, getting out #1, and the ball was thrown to Mattingly at first, getting the double play, ending the inning, the game, and the series. Topeka wins game 6 by a 5-1 score, and win the series 4 games to 2. The Stingers advance to the GT conference finals to face the Dark Valley Destinies. STINGERS WIN 4-2.
