1986 CDBL PLAYOFFS PREVIEW Round 1 - Tamalpais Mountaineers (95-67) vs. Dark Valley Destinies (95-67) The Dark Valley Destinies won the Tiant division pennant both in '84 and '86 thanks to above average pitching and a particularly effective platooning situation. There are a few hitting standouts on the '86 squad. 2B/OF Danny Tartabull hit 27 homers and drove in 117 runs, while OF Darryl Strawberry hit 19 homers with 91 runs scored, and 3B Buddy Bell scored 88 runs. The rest of the team is an effective platoon squad, with each position averaging about 100 runs scored each. Ace John Tudor didn't have a repeat of his Cy Young 1985 season, but Tudor, Don Carman, Dave Dravecky and Doug Drabek all put in decent seasons with double digit wins each. Closer Donnie Moore was the season leader in saves with 33. Tamalpais fans screamed AUUUGH! during the last few games of the season as the previously-front team lost the pennant in the final few days to the Topeka Stingers. The Mountaineers were strong both in pitching and in hitting. OF Kevin McReynolds had 24 homers, 103 runs scored and 126 RBI. Catcher Lance Parrish had a .391 on base aveage, .568 slugging average and 27 homers. CF Lenny Dykstra scored 91 runs and stole 38 bases, while SS Ozzmie Smith scored 97 runs and stole 48 bases. There was no one true ace on the pitching staff for Tamalpais, although Scott Garrelts did lead Mountaineer starters in ERA with 2.92. Don Robinson and Willie Hernandez shared closer duties, saving 34 total games. 4 starters in all won double digit games, although late acqusition Kirk McCaskill was a little disappointing in his brief stint with Tamalpais (4-4, 4.15 ERA in 12 starts, but with an overall season ERA of 2.68 and 18 total wins). Dark Valley won the regular season series 5 games to 3. Dark Valley has home field advantage. 1986 CDBL PLAYOFFS Tamalpais Mountaineers (Garrelts) at Dark Valley Destinies (Tudor) GAME ONE -- If Tamalpais and Dark Valley play like this for the rest of the series, we're in for one heck of a playoff matchup. Dark Valley jumped to the early lead in the 1st on a Kal Daniels RBI single, who scored Buddy Bell from 2nd base. The Mountaineers tied it up in the 2nd on a Chili Davis homer, and took the lead the next inning with a Jeff Stone homer. Dark Valley tied things up in the 4th with a Danny Tartabull homer. For those scoring at home, or even if you're alone, it's a 2-2 ballgame in the 4th. Dark Valley re-takes the lead in the 5th when Ernie Riles scored from 2nd on a Jerry Mumphrey single. In the 6th, Kal Daniels reached on error, then stole second .. and moved to third on a throwing error. Dan Pasqua drives him in. 4-2 Dark Valley. With the score now 4-2 Dark Valley in the top of the 7th, do you think it's over? Nope. Tamalpais comes back. In the 7th, with 2 on, 2 outs, Ozzie Smith hit a 2-on, 2-out RBI single to close the gap at one. In the top of the 8th, with John Tudor on the mound, and with 2 runners on base, Darrell Evans delivers for the Mountaineers, hitting a 3-run tater. 6-4 Mountaineers. Dark Valley failed to score in the bottom of the 8th, so they had just 3 outs to score 2 or more runs in the bottom of the 9th. Unfortunately for Dark Valley, John Henry Johnson was on the mound for Tamalpais, and got 2 outs without any runners scoring. Unfortunately for John Henry Johnson, Dark Valley still had 1 out. With 2 on, 2 outs, Johnson faced pinch hitter Tony Walker. A strikeout would end the game. Didn't happen. Walker hits in the clutch, doubling in 2 runs. Just like that, it's a tie ballgame. Johnson was done for the day, and now on board was Willie Hernandez. Hernandez faced another pinch hitter, Jim Wohlford. A strikeout would put the game into extra innings. Didn't happen. Wohlford singled, driving in the winning run. The back and forth game 1 ends with the Destinies defeating the Mountaineers by a 7-6 edge. DESTINIES LEAD 1-0. Dave Dravecky got into trouble early. In the top of the 2nd, with runners on 1st & 3rd, Chili Davis hit an RBI double for the first score of the day. Darrell Evans scored from 3rd on a fielder's choice for a 2-0 Mountaineers lead. With 2 outs, Jeff Stone hit an RBI double. Then, Kevin McReynolds blasted the doors wide open with a massive 3-run homer. Dave Dravecky didn't get out of the 2nd inning, putting his playoff ERA at a slightly high 32.40. Chili Davis added to the Mountaineer lead in the 3rd on an RBI triple, for a 7-0 Tamalpais contest. But don't count out the Destinies yet. They started to chip away at the deficit in the 3rd, when Dave Conception doubled in Craig Lefferts, and Jack Clark hit a 2-run shot for a 8-3 game. Ken Oberkfell hit an RBI single in the 5th, but in the bottom of the inning Dark Valley did more damage again. In the bottom of the 5th, with the bases loaded and with 2 outs and Phil Garner at the plate, Mathews balked in a run. To add insult to injury, Garner proceeded to hit a 2-RBI single to make it a tight 8-6 game. Mathews was done for the day, his playoff ERA 11.57. Phil Garner wasn't done producing yet, as he hit another 2-out RBI single in the 7th to make it a 8-7 game. Tamalpais didn't score for the rest of the game, so they'd have to hold onto this narrow 1 run lead. We move now to the bottom of the 9th, with the score still 8-7. Jeff Robinson is on the mound for the Mountaineers. With 0 outs, Jack Clark singles, and is replaced at first by pinch runner Darryl Strawberry. Strawberry tries to steal 2nd, but is thrown out by Tettleton with Tartabull at the plate. After Strawberry gets himself out, Tartabull singles. But the rally sputters out, as Phil Garner goes from hero to goat by hitting a game ending double play. Tamalpais wins game 2 by a score of 8-7, and take home field advantage in the playoffs. The Destinies chased around Kirk McCaskill early in the 1st, capped off by a 3-run shot by Darryl Strawberry. Tamalpais cut the Destinies' lead to a 3-1 contest in the 3rd on a Jeff Stone homer. Dark Valley added to their lead in the 4th on an Ernie Riles RBI double, 4-1. Jeff Stone came through in the 7th again with another solo shot, but Dark Valley kept pace in the 8th on a Jim Dwyer RBI double. Despite the Mountaineer pitching staff combining for an astonishing 15 strikouts, Dark Valley prevails in game 3 by a score of 5-2. DESTINIES LEAD 2-1. Strawberry was a one man wrecking crew in game four. In the 1st, Darryl put the Destinies up 2-0 with a 2-run shot. For an encore, he smacked another 2-run dinger in the 4th for a 4-0 Destinies lead. A John Russell single in the 7th scored Kal Daniels from 2nd for a 5-0 Destinies lead. The late innings did provide Tamalpais with scoring opportunities. In the 8th inning, Doug Drabek had been pitching a shutout, but he was tiring fast, and faced a bases loaded situation with 2 outs. Ozzie Smith broke up Drabek's shutout with a 2-RBI double. Vern Ruhle came on for Dark Valley in relief and only managed to load the bases before handing duties off to closer Donnie Moore. Moore came through in the clutch, striking out Lenny Dykstra. Moore would pitch the 9th, where he found himself with another 2-out bases loaded situation, the score still 5-2. Greg Gross was at at the plate. A home run would win the game instantly for Tamalpais. Would Donnie Moore come through again? Yes. Gross K's, and Donnie Moore once again pulls Dark Valley's assets out of the fire. The Destinies with game 4 by a score of 5-2, and are now 1 game away from advancing to the GT conference finals. DESTINIES LEAD 3-1. Mountaineer ace Scott Garrelts got into trouble in the 3rd. With 1 out and the bases loaded, Garrelts walked Danny Tartabull, scoring the first run of the game. Dark Valley killed their chances for the rest of the inning when John Russell hit into an inning- ending double play. The Mountaineers tied things up in the bottom of the 3rd, when a Jeff Stone single drove in Ozzie Smith from 3rd. Dark Valley retook the lead in the 5th on back-to-back homers from Buddy Bell and Dan Pasqua. Tamalpais make it a 3-2 contest in the 6th on a Kevin McReynolds sacrifice fly. But no matter what the Mountaineers did, Dark Valley had an answer. The Destinies scored a run in the 7th & 8th innings, giving them the 5-2 lead. All the while, John Tudor was still pitching on the mound. In the 9th inning, Tudor got Chris Brown to ground out, Chili Davis to ground out, and Julio Cruz to fly out to secure the complete game, the game winner, and the series winner. Dark Valley wins game 5 by a score of 5-2, and clinch the series 4 games to 1. The Destinies advance to the GT conference finals. DESTINIES WIN 4-1.
