Aaron/Paige Conference Finals Point Lomas Friars (97-65) vs. Dewey Beach Lush (93-69, 4-3 win in rd. 1) Under a different name, Point Lomas posted the best record in the league in 1985. With the new name, they did it again in 1986. The Friars boasted the best tablesetters in the league in OF Tim Raines and 1B Keith Hernandez. Hernandez hit .300 with a .411 on base average and 119 runs scored (along with 92 RBI's). Tim Raines was brought on board via trade early in the season, and never looked back. Raines hit .353, with 21 triples (a league record), stole 81 bases and scored 138 runs. Mike Pagliarulo was the prime beneficiary of these two's time on base, hitting 28 homers and drove in 108 runs in just 406 at bats. Von Hayes had a .968 OPS, with 81 runs scored and 86 RBI's. On the pitching side of things, the team ERA of 3.31 was better than league average. Bob Forsch went 14-8 with a 2.75 ERA, while Bert Blyleven and Scott Sanderson were a combined 31-17. Moose Haas only pitched in 11 games, but in that time went 9-1. The Dewey Beach Lush fought an epic 7 game series with the Arkham Investigators before prevailing in the final game of the series. Jesse Barfield has been a big bat in the series so far, with a .444 slugging average, 6 runs scored and 6 RBI. Catcher Don Slaught has appeared in only 4 post-season games, but has 6 RBI. Dave Parker is hitting .333/.379/.593 wit 5 runs scored and 6 RBI. Mike LaCoss is 1-0 in 2 post-season starts with 17 innings pitched and a 1.59 ERA, while Keith Atherton has yet to allow a run in 5 innings of work in the post-season. Point Lomas dominated the season series 6 games to 2, and own home field advantage. **************************************************************************** 1986 CDBL PLAYOFFS AP Conference Finals - Dewey Beach Lush (Scott) at Point Lomas Friars (Forsch) GAME ONE -- A great performance from both teams. Bob Forsch and Mike Scott each had the opposition in a stranglehold for the first four innings, when both aces had no-hitters going. Alas, something eventually had to give, and the first one to yield was Forsch. In the top of the 5th, Paul Molitor walked, and Dave Parker singled, breaking up Forsch's no hitter. Then, with 2 outs and a full count, Garry Templeton hit a key double, driving in both Molitor and Parker for the first 2 runs of the game. Forsch's no hitter came to an end in the 5th, and Scott's no-hit bid ended in the 6th on a Gary Carter solo home run. The bottom of the 7th inning turned out to be key for the Friars. With Ryne Sandberg at 2nd base and Mike Scott still on the mound, pinch hitter Ty Gainey was at the plate. Gainey had 50 AB in the regular season, mostly in a pinch hitting role, and only 1 home run. Looks like Gainey's a post-season kind of guy, because Gainey proceeded to crank the ball over the wall. The 2-run homer gave Point Lomas the 3-2 lead, and they held on for the rest of the game. Forsch ends up with a complete game and the 3-2 win. FRIARS LEAD 1-0. Finals - Dewey Beach Lush (LaCoss) at Point Lomas Friars (Blyleven) GAME TWO -- Pitching continues to dominate this series. Nobody was able to score a run until the top of the 4th, when Dewey Beach's Mike Davis hit a RBI double. The Friars countered in the bottom of the 4th when Tim Raines singled, stole second, and moved to third on a throwing error. Raines later scored on a fielder's choice. The Lush broke the tie in the 7th on a Dave Parker solo home run. In the 8th Dewey Beach scored again, when Mike Davis hit a bases loaded, 2-out, 2-RBI single for a 4-1 Dewey Beach lead. Point Lomas did score another run in the bottom of the 8th, but it wasn't enough. Dewey Beach wins game two by a score of 4-2. SERIES TIED 1-1. The Friars would score again in the 5th, first on a Tim Raines solo shot, then later on a 2-run homer by Gary Carter. 4-0 game. But that wasn't the big story. Honeycutt had a no-hitter going through the 5th inning .. 6th .. 7th .. 8th .. when he reached the bottom of the 9th inning, Rick Honeycutt had pitched 8 innings of no-hit (and no walk) ball. The first Dewey Beach batter up was Damasco Garcia, who popped it up into foul territory, where Bobby Grich caught it. 1 out. Next up was pinch hitter Kevin Seitzer. K. 2 outs, 1 out away from a no-hitter. Last batter was Mike Davis. Would Davis spoil things? Nope. Davis strikes out, and Rick Honeycutt wins game three by a 4-0 score on the first ever CDBL post-season no-hitter. FRIARS LEAD 2-1. Finals - Point Lomas Friars (Sanderson) at Dewey Beach Lush (Leonard) GAME FOUR -- Both teams traded runs throughout most of the game. In the 5th inning, both teams were deadlocked at 3 runs each, and would remain that way through 9 innings. In the top of the 10th inning, the Friars made their move. With Dewey Beach closer Frank Atherton on the mound and runners on 1st & 3rd, pinch hitter Bobby Meachem hit a successful suicide squeeze, getting Von Hayes to score from 3rd base and made it a 4-3 Point Lomas game. Roy Smalley then cleared the bases with a 2-run homer. 6-3 Friars. Rick Anderson pitched the bottom of the 10th inning for Point Lomas. The first batter up was Kevin Seitzer, who flied out for out #1. Larry Sheets flied out for out #2. Then Jesse Barfield walked. Then Paul Molitor walked. Up came Dave Parker. A home run would tie things up, but Parker didn't deliver, grounding out to end the game. Point Lomas wins game 4 by a 6-3 score, and are a win away from advancing to the world series. Finals - Point Lomas Friars (Forsch) at Dewey Beach Lush (Scott) GAME FIVE -- Dewey Beach had to win this one to stay alive, Point Lomas was looking to finish off the Lush early to move to the CDBL World Series. In the 1st inning, Tim Raines showed just how valuable he was to the Friars over the regular season. Raines singled, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a deep flyout by Keith Hernandez, and scored on a Von Hayes single. In the bottom of the 1st, the Lush tied it up, when Larry Sheets scored from 3rd on a Bob Forsch wild pitch. After the 1st inning eruptions, both aces pitched well. But, there's no ties in baseball. And every series has its goat. Unfortunately for Dewey Beach, that goat's name is Dave Parker. In the top of the 8th inning, with Keith Hernandez on 1st, Von Hayes singles. But a Parker error would let Hernandez scoot on over to 3rd base. A Pagliarulo deep sacrifice fly (to Dave Parker, even), scored Keith Hernandez from 3rd for a 2-1 Friars lead. Pinch hitter Ty Gainey singled (2 for 2, sign that kid to a contract!), scoring Hayes for a 3-1 Point Lomas game. In the bottom of the 8th, the Lush had their chance. With 2 outs, and the bases loaded, Friars reliever Gary Lucas faced .. you guessed it, Dave Parker. Parker could have redeemed himself, but choked, grounding out, ending the inning. We move now to the bottom of the 9th. Rick Anderson on the mound for the Friars. 1st batter was Lonnie Smith, who singled. Next up was Damasco Garcia, who hit into a double play. 2 outs, 1 more before the Friars moving to the world series. It was all up to Gary Templeton to start a rally, but it was not to be. Templeton flies out to Von Hayes, and the Point Lomas Friars are going to the CDBL World Series thanks to a 3-1 game 5 win. FRIARS WIN 4-1.
