1986 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW ROUND 1 - ARKHAM INVESTIGATORS (92-70) vs. DEWEY BEACH LUSH (93-69) A punishing offense vs. an intimidating pitching staff. A likely league MVP vs. a likely Cy Young winner. And both owners have the last name of Hobday. Geof Hobday's Arkham Investigators have been a perennial pre-season favorite, but never really lived up to expectations until this year. Arkham went 92-70 to capture the AP Conference wildcard behind a strong offense. The guy at the center of it all is George Bell, who had a truly monsterous season. Bell set the league record for RBI's with 156, and scored 111 times with 39 dingers. Much of Bell's RBI's were thanks to Wade Boggs, who was one of the best tablesetters in the league, with a .348 average, .440 on base average, and 128 runs scored. Kirk Gibson smacked 29 homers and drove in 76 runs, while Ken Griffey Sr. had an OPS of 0.915 with 70 runs scored and 87 RBI. The Arkham offense scored 806 times, the best in the league. On the pitching side of things, things were a tad mediocre, posting a worst than average 3.71 ERA. But with this offense, it was more than adequate. Floyd Youmans was the ace for this team, going 15-5 with a 2.86 ERA. Curt Young went 16-7, and closer Tom Henke was 12-6 with 19 saves and a 2.54 ERA. The Dewey Beach Lush were stuck in the middle of the Paige division at mid-season, and things were so bad that GM Will Hobday declared a fire sale for next year. Luckily no dump trades were made. The Lush had an amazing 2nd half, finishing at 93-69 and clinching the Paige division pennant by 9 games. What got them there? Pitching. Dewey Beach posted a league best 3.09 ERA, led by uber-ace Mike Scott. Scott finished the year with 18 wins, a 2.51 ERA in 294 innings, and a league-record 347 strikeouts. Mike LaCoss was no slouch either, going 15-9 with a 2.73 ERA. Frank DiPino and Keith Atherton combined for 28 saves. Tommy John pitched 100 innings of relief with 5 wins and a 2.07 ERA. The Lush were slightly better than average on offense. Outfielder Jesse Barfield was their best player at the plate, smacking 37 homers and driving in 120 runs. Eddie Murray scored 96 runs. The Arkham Investigators won the season series against the Lush 5-3, but the Lush have home field advantage. **************************************************************************** 1986 CDBL PLAYOFFS ROUND 1 - ARKHAM INVESTIGATORS (Darling) at DEWEY BEACH LUSH (Scott) The league playoffs are under way, with the AP conference wildcard Arkham Investigators facing off against the Paige division winner Dewey Beach Lush. The Investigators wasted no time in putting a run on the board. In the top of the first, Alfredo Griffen singled, stole 2nd and moved to third on a throwing error. George Bell hit a 2-out single to make it a 1-0 Arkham Game. The Lush would come back with a vengence in the bottom of the third. Arkham starter Ron Darling gave up 8 straight balls, walking Eddie Murray and Larry Sheets. Jesse Barfield hits an RBI single to tie it up. With 2 outs, Dave Parker smacked a 2-RBI double, giving the Lush the 3-1 lead. Mike Davis hit an RBI double, and Damasco Garcia hit an RBI single to give Dewey Beach the 5-1 lead. The Investigators would chip away at the Lush's lead in the 5th. With Wade Boggs on third, Ken Phelps hit a sacrifice fly. 5-2, and Alfredo Griffen moves to 3rd base. Then George Bell hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Griffen (again), making it just a 2-run Dewey Beach lead. In the bottom of the inning, Paul Molitor blasted the 1st homer of the playoffs against Jose Rijo. After Molitor came Dave Parker .. who hits another homer. Back-to-back homers gives the Lush the 7-3 lead. A 2 out, bases loaded single by Larry Sheets would give the Lush the 8-3 lead. Yet the Arkham Investigators were not done. In the top of the 8th, the Investigators turned to their secret weapon: Rafael Belliard. You can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him. Belliard cranks one deep, his 1st homer ever in the CDBL. 8-4 Lush. But the Investigators couldn't depend on Belliard alone. In the top of the 9th, trailing by 4 runs, with 2 on, 2 out, Steve Farr got Kirk Gibson to strike out, ending game one. Dewey Beach wins the first game of the series by a score of 8-4. LUSH LEAD 1-0. In the top of the 1st, Wade Boggs continued to show his value as a table setter, scoring from 3rd base on a George Bell sacrifice fly, who continued to show his value as an RBI guy. The Lush countered in the bottom of the 1st inning. Garth Iorg hit an RBI double to tie it up at 1 all. A Dave Parker RBI single would make it a 2-1 Lush lead. In the 3rd inning, the Investigators tied it up at 2 each when Ken Phelps hit an RBI single, scoring Wade Boggs from 2nd base. We move now to the top of the 9th, with the score still tied at 2. The Investigators moved in for the kill. Dewey Beach reliever Frank DiPino plunked Kirk Gibson to put a man on first. Gibson promptly stole 2nd. Jim "no, not that one" Morrison singled, giving Gibson a chance to score from 2nd .. and score he did, barely avoiding the tag at home. 3-2 Arkham. Later, with 1 out, and runners on 1st and 3rd, Wade Boggs hit into a potential DP ball. But Boggs beat out the throw, and a runner scores from third. 4-2 Arkham lead in the top of the 9th. We're now in the bottom of the 9th. Dewey Beach had 3 outs to put up 2 runs, and they'd have to do it against Arkham closer Tom Henke. Henke started the inning by striking out Eddie Murray. Henke then walked Jesse Barfield, and a Dave Parker double put runners on 1st and 3rd. Henke then *blew* the save, giving up a 2 RBI double to Don Slaught. Dewey Beach ties up the game, and we would go to extra innings. In extra innings, each team would get multiple chances to win it, only to clutch defeat from the jaws of victory. In the bottom of the 11th, with 1 out, a runner on third and a very tired Tom Henke on the mound, Henke managed to suck it up and perform like a pro, striking out Don Slaught and Reid Nichols to end the inning, with the score still tied at 4. In the top of the 12th, with 2 on, 2 out, with Lush reliever Keith Atherton on the mound, Kirk Gibson couldn't deliver, flying out to end the inning. In the top of the 13th, with the score still tied at 4, the Investigators would have another shot at winning the game. With 2 outs and a a runner on 1st, Wade Boggs doubled, giving slow footed Alan Ashby a chance for herodom by scoring from 1st .. bad move. Ashby gets easily thrown out, ending the inning with the score still tied. In the 14th inning, the Investigators would finally do some damage. with Steve Farr on the mound, 1 out, runners on 1st & 3rd, pinch hitter Dave Martinez hit a single, scoring pinch hitter Rick Cerone from 3rd. 5-4 Investigators game. But they were not done. George Hendrick hit a 2 RBI double, giving Arkham a 3 run lead. The Lush would have to pull off another clutch performance to keep in the game. Arkham reliever Ed Olwine on the mound, 2 on, 1 out, facing Eddie Murray. Murray hits one deep. Will it clear the fences, tying up the game? No, a deep fly out. But Mike Davis scores from third, and Garth Iorg moves to 3rd base. 7-5 Arkham. Slugger Jesse Barfield now at the plate. A homer would tie things up, but it the magic ran out for Dewey Beach for game 2. Barfield grounded out, ending the 14 inning contest. Arkham wins it 7-5 in 14 innings, and take home field advantage in the series. SERIES TIED 1-1. In the top of the 6th, the Lush scored 3 more times, capped off by a 2 RBI double from Damasco Garcia. We move now to the bottom of the 9th, with the Lush up 4-0. Floyd Bannister has thrown 8 shutout innings. But he got into trouble early, loading the bases with 0 outs. George Hendrick hit a 2 RBI double cutting Dewey Beach's lead to just 2. Frank DiPino became the new Dewey Beach pitcher. Didn't help, as Alfredo Griffen hit an RBI single, clearing the bases, and tying up the game at 4 all. Griffen stole 2nd, but due to a throwing error, moved to 3rd base. All with 0 outs. PH Rick Cerone was intentionally walked to face .. Kirk Gibson? The winner goes home to rest up for the AP conference finals. The loser just goes home. Would it be over before it began? To say that Arkham's Floyd Youmans had a rough day would be an understatement. In the bottom of the 1st, Paul Molitor hit an RBI double. Youman then loaded the bases. Mike Davis then hits a 2 RBI single. 3-0 Dewey Beach. Dave Parker scored on a fielder's choice to cap off a 4-run 1st inning. It didn't get much better in the 2nd for Youmans, when Larry sheets hit a 2-run homer. Youmans lasted just 1 1/3 innings, putting his team at a 0-6 deficit. We now move to the top of the 4th, with the score at 7-0 Dewey Beach. Arkham makes their comeback. It starts out innocently enough. George Hendrick hit an RBI triple, making it a 7-1 contest. A Griffen single made it 7-2. A Kirk Gibson RBI single made it 7-3. Suddenly the Investigators have momentum. Floyd Bannister loads the bases, with just 1 out, facing Wade Boggs. Boggs gets the walk, making it 7-4. And the bases are still loaded. Tommy John then comes on in relief (his 1st appearance of the post-season, what an opportunity!). He gets to face George Bell .. who delivers. Bell hits a bases loaded 2 RBI single, putting Arkham within 1 run of Dewey Beach. The 1 run lead wouldn't last long. In the 6th, with John still on the mound, Kirk Gibson tied things up with a solo home run. 162 regular season games and 6 playoff games have reduced to a 3-inning sudden death match. Dewey Beach made their move in the 8th, when Dave Parker hit a 2-out RBI double, giving them the 8-7 lead. Arkham would need to deliver in the top of the 9th to stay in the game. The Lush had Keith Atherton on the mound in the top of the 9th. 1st batter was George Bell, who grounded out. Dale Berra gets an infield single. Jim Morrison popped out, making it 2 outs. It was all now up to George Hendrick to deliver for the Investigators. But it was not to be. Hendrick grounded to Templeton, who threw to Garcia for the force. Game 7 ends in a nail-biter, with the Lush defeating the Investigators by a score of 7-6, and Dewey Beach wins the series 4 games to 3. Dewey Beach now advances to the AP conference finals to take on the Point Lomas Friars. LUSH WIN SERIES 4-3.
