1986 CDBL PLAYOFFS WORLD SERIES PREVIEW Point Lomas Friars (97-65, 4-1 postseason) vs. Dark Valley Destinies (95-67, 8-3 post season) 22 regular season teams reduced to 7 post-season teams, of which now 2 are just left. The Friars posted the best record in the league, and had a first round bye. Point Lomas defeated Dewey Beach in 5 games in the Aaron/Paige conference finals to advance to their 2nd world series in 3 years. 5 post-season games isn't much to pad the post-season stats, but catcher Gary Carter has been the batting leader for Point Lomas so far, hitting .444 with 3 homers, 4 runs and 6 RBI's. Tim Raines has scored 3 runs and stolen 2 bases. The pitching has been amazing so far, with a team ERA of 1.76. This includes the 1st ever post-season no hitter, thrown by Rick Honeycutt. Dark Valley had the regular season pennant wound up well before the season was done. They were saving their energy for the post-season, where they defeated the Tamalpais Mountaineers in 5 games in round 1, and defeated the Topeka Stingers in 6 games in the Gehrig/Tiant conference finals. Darryl Strawberry has been used strictly vs right handers (and the Destinies have faced lefty starters half the time), but in his 7 games played has hit 3 homers, scored 6 times and driven in 9 runs. 3B Buddy Bell has scored 6 times and drive in 4 runs, while 1B Jack Clark has scored 5 times and driven in 5 runs. John Tudor has been a true ace, starting 4 times, pitching 9 innings in 3 of those, and winning all of his starts. When the game has been on the line, closer Donnie Moore has always come through, saving 5 of 5 games with no runs allowed. Dark Valley won the season series 4 games to 2, but Point Lomas has home field advantage. **************************************************************************** 1986 CDBL PLAYOFFS WORLD SERIES Dark Valley Destinies (Tudor) at Point Lomas Friars (Forsch) GAME ONE -- The Destinies faced a righty on the pitching mound, which meant that Darryl Strawberry was in the lineup. Strawberry didn't disappoint, smacking a 2-run shot in the 1st. The Destinies scored again in the 6th on a solo shot by Danny Tartabull. The Friars put a run up on the board in the 7th inning on a Sal Butera RBI single. The Friars had a chance to do some major damage in the bottom of the 8th, when with 1 out Vern Ruhle faced John Russell at the plate. But Russell hit into a double play, ending the inning. In the bottom of the 9th, Destinies closer Donnie Moore was going for his 6th out of 6 save opportunities. First batter up was Ryne Sandberg, who struck out. Then, pinch hitter Rupert Jones singled. Pinch hitter Bobby Meacham flied out, giving 2 outs in the game. Tim Raines could have been the 3rd out, but singled instead. 2 on, 2 out and Juan Beniquez was at the plate. Beniquez struck out, ending the game and giving Dark Valley the 1st win of the world series in a 3-1 game. DESTINIES LEAD 1-0. His bid ended in the 1st on a Jack Clark double. In the 2nd inning, Don Carman's no-hit bid was ended on a solo shot by Gary Carter for a 1-0 Friars game. The Destinies tied things up in the 5th inning when John Russell grounded out, letting Tony Walker score from 3rd. In the top of the 7th, Don Carman found himself in a bit of a bind. Bases loaded, 0 outs. Well, Carman was no longer in a bind because his day was done. It was now Craig Lefferts' turn to be in a bind. First up was Ryne Sandberg, who hit a shallow popout to the outfield, not deep enough to score a run. 1 out. Next up was John Moses. Moses flies out, but this one is deep enough for Gary Carter to score from 3rd base. 2-1 Friars, and 2 outs in the inning. Next up was Rick Honeycutt, but 1 run was all they could get, as Honeycutt grounds out to end the inning. In the top of the 9th, Gary Carter scored his 3rd run of the game on another home run. Now the Destinies had to score at least 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to keep in the game. Friars Rick Anderson was on the mound. First up was Jack Clark, who was the first down on a strikeout. Danny Tartabull singled. Phil Garner flied out, for 2 outs. The last batter was pinch hitter Jim Dwyer, but Dwyer couldn't get anything going, striking out and ending the game. Point Lomas wins game 3 by a score of 3-1, thanks to the bat of Gary Carter. FRIARS LEAD 2-1. Game four wasn't much better. In the 1st inning, with runners on 1st & 2nd, Von Hayes hits a grounder to Tartabull .. who bobbles it. His error loads the bases with 0 outs. Mike Pagliarulo is up next, and his deep fly ball scores Tim Raines from 3rd. On the same play, Keith Hernandez tried to move to 3rd, but was thrown out. Ryne Sandberg flies out to end the inning with the Friars scoring only 1 run. In the 2nd inning, the Destinies made a comeback. With Tartabull at first, Jim Dwyer hits a triple, scoring Tartabull. John Russell then singled, scoring Dwyer from 3rd and making it a 2-1 Dark Valley game. We now move to the top of the 9th, with the score still at 2-1. Dark Valley closer Donnie Moore comes on to save the game. 1st batter up was Reggie Williams, who tagged Moore for a homer, tying the game up at 2 all. Moore would get through the rest of the inning, but now the game was tied. In the bottom of the 9th, Friars reliever Gary Lucas was having a bit of a tough time. He got 2 outs, but in doing so loaded the bases. The last batter up was catcher Ron Karkovice, who was actually pretty good vs. lefties. Would Karkovice win it in the last at bat for the Destinies? Yep. Karkovice singles, bringing in the winning run from 3rd base. Dark Valley wins game 4 by a score of 3-2, and tie up the series. SERIES TIED 2-2. In the bottom of the 1st, the Friars jumped to an early lead on a RBI double by Gary Carter. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Friars had a big opportunity. Dave Dravecky loaded the bases with 0 outs with Bert Blyleven at the plate. Blyleven couldn't make anything happen, striking out for out #1. Next up was Tim Raines. Raines grounded to Clark, who threw to home to get the sure out for out #2. Juan Beniquez flied out for out #3, squandering an opportunity for the Friars who failed to capitalize on the bases loaded opportunity. In the top of the 4th inning, Dark Valley made their move. Darryl Strawberry tied things up with an RBI triple. Kal Daniels gave the Destinies a 2-1 lead in the 4th, driving in Strawberry with a single. Things would remain close until the 8th inning, when Dark Valley broke it wide open. Darry Strawberry padded the lead (and then some) in the 8th with a 3-run dinger, and Jack Clark added an RBI single for a 6-1 Destinies lead. We now move to the bottom of the 9th, with the Destinies still enjoying a 5 run lead. Vern Ruhle leaves the mound with 1 out and runners on 2nd & 3rd. On comes Donnie Moore to close things out. First up for Moore was Tim Raines, who hit a shallow popout. 2 outs. 1 more out, and the Destinies are world champions. Juan Beniquez was up, and hit an RBI single. 6-2 Destinies. Keith Hernandez was walked to load the bases with 2 outs. Next up was John Stefero, a former pinch hitter for Gary Carter. Moore could be a hero or a goat in this situation. Verdict? Hero. Stefero flies out, and Dark Valley wins the 1986 CDBL World Series by a score of 6-2 in game six. DESTINIES WIN 4-2, 1986 CDBL WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS! PLAYOFF MVP: Lots of candidates here. You have the amazing Darryl Strawberry, who in just 12 playoff games hit .368/.468/.921 with 5 homers, 10 runs scored and 16 RBI. You have "Mr. Clutch" closer Donnie Moore, who appeared in 8 games, saving 6 games out of 7 opportunities (and winning that 7th one), with a tiny 1.13 ERA. But MVP honors go to ace starter John Tudor, who had an impressive 6 wins in 6 starts, throwing 4 complete games, 2 shutouts, and a 1.78 ERA.
