1986 CDBL CY YOUNG AWARD 2nd runner up - Mike Witt - Boston Bulldogs NAME ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Witt 2.29 19 8 0 41 41 9 4 306.1 236 86 78 88 255 1228 23 8 24 In a season where everyone and their mother started 40+ games, Witt was one of the better ones. His multiple chances (and a thin 2.29 ERA) allowed him to post a 19-8 record, tied for most wins in the league. His 255 strikeouts was 3rd best in the league, and his ERA was 2nd best, while his innings pitched was league leading. On paper, Witt was the best starter out there, but Witt unfortunately lacked that "X-factor" - a playoff appearance. Eichhorn threw 172 2/3 innings, all in relief, and put up a 13-5 record on relief wins alone. All this an a 1.77, too (oh yeah, and 24 saves, something which no other starter in Cy Young contention has!). Eichhorn would win on an empirical formula basis alone, but alas, there's a bias towards starters for the Cy Young award. A big part of that was ace Mike Scott, who pitched in 40 games, racking up 294 innings of 2.51 ERA ball, good for 4th in the league in ERA and 2nd in innings pitched. Scott also racked up quite a few wins, posting an 18-10 record. A K king, Scott struck out a league leading 347 batters, 83 batters better than the 2nd place pitcher.
