Righetti was gold again for the Stingers (this time being the closer on a pennant winning team). Righetti had an ERA hovering near 2, and saved 32 games. He may be 3rd in the voting, but he's the only one on the FOTY list who is going to see the post-season. 1st runner up, fireman of the year: Juan Agosto - Philadelphia Liberty NAME Team PS ERA W L S WHIP VAL IP G GS CG SH K Agosto Liberty RP 0.88 2 2 23 0.97 25.51 71.1 48 0 0 0 40 For the first half of the season, Juan Agosto was unbeatable. His first run given up was on June 25th .. almost 3 months after the season began. Agosto made the all-star team with a 0.00 ERA. His second half was not nearly so perfect, but he still wound up with a 0.88 ERA, which was the best for any pitcher on the all-CDBL squad. 1985 CBDL Fireman of the year: Mark Davis - Weavers NAME Team PS ERA W L S WHIP VAL IP G GS CG SH K Davis,M Weavers RP 2.83 6 8 31 1.19 29.16 101.2 78 0 0 0 129 Mark Davis had it all. He appeared in 78 games, and saved 31. In 101 2/3 innings, Davis struck out 129 batters, which would be decent for a starting pitcher with twice the innings. While his 2.83 ERA isn't as good as some of the other relievers, it still was enough to keep the Weavers in the game. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 2nd runner up, Cy Young: Bryn Smith - Topeka Stingers NAME Team PS ERA W L S WHIP VAL IP G GS CG SH K Smith Stingers SP 2.31 21 5 0 1.01 32.05 256.2 33 33 13 3 156 Bryn Smith had an enviable position. Smith was an ace pitcher on a team with a punishing offense. That translates into a lot of wins. 21 in fact. But even on a lesser team, Smith would have done well, with a 2.31 ERA and a WHIP near 1. 1st runner up, Cy Young: Doc Gooden - PV Stallions NAME Team PS ERA W L S WHIP VAL IP G GS CG SH K Gooden Stallions SP 2.23 20 11 0 1.13 35.07 314.2 41 41 11 4 284 By all means, Gooden was the uber-pitcher this year. He pitched 300+ innings, started 1 out of every 4 Stallions games, and won 20. He struck out 284 batters, too. Gooden also won 20 in spite of the rather lackluster performance by the Stallions sluggers. 1985 CDBL Cy Young: John Tudor - Dark Valley Destinies NAME Team PS ERA W L S WHIP VAL IP G GS CG SH K Tudor Destinies SP 2.63 24 6 0 1.05 33.42 273.2 35 35 15 3 174 John Tudor was so good, he was record-setting. Tudor won a league high (and league record) 24 games, and pitched a record 15 complete games. Tudor was also Mr. Clutch, going 8-3 in his last 11 starts which almost put Dark Valley into the playoffs. While not the innings workhorse Doc Gooden was, Tudor still pitched a highly respectable 273 2/3rds innings. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 2nd runner up, MVP: Steve Balboni - Albuquerque Stingrays NAME Team PS AVG OBP SBSLG VAL AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI SB CS Balboni Stingrays 1B 0.262 0.320 0.536 20.2 565 148 23 2 43 91 124 1 2 Steve Balboni was a one-trick pony, but boy could he do that trick well.
