League Wildcard Albuquerque Stingrays (92-70) vs. Gehrig Division Winner Topeka Stingers (99-63). Topeka intended to cause waves in 1985, and they certainly accomplished that goal. Topeka was near the top in hitting, and had one of the best pitching staffs in the league. Carlton Fisk, Tommy Herr and George Brett won all-CDBL honors, with Fisk & Brett each hitting 30+ homers and driving in 95+ runs (Brett actually drove in 128 runs). Speedster Vince Coleman set the league steals record with 88, and scored 103 runs. Don Mattingly and Mike Davis also put in stellar seasons. On pitching, ace and CDBL all-pro Bryn Smith won 21 games, and all-pro Dave Righetti was a dominant closer again, this time saving 32 games. The Stingrays rode to the playoffs on the back of 1st team all-CDBL first baseman Steve Balboni. Balboni smacked 43 homers and drove in 124 runs. Lloyd Moseby and Willie Randolph were big beneficiaries, each scoring 97 runs. Rich Gedman made all-CDBL honors as a catcher. On pitching, ace Jack Morris won 17 games, and 6 different pitchers notched double-digit wins. Fernando Valenzuela was a mild disappointment this year, but he could regain his ace form in the playoffs. All-pro reliever Roy Thomas saved 19 games and won 11 with a 1.81 ERA. On paper, Topeka has the better team, but the Stingrays took the season series 7-3. Topeka has the home field advantage. ***************************************************************************** GAME ONE - ALBUQUERQUE STINGRYS (Morris) at TOPEKA STINGERS (Smith) Both teams played well in this one, but there can be only one. In the first, Vince Coleman walked, stole second, and scored on a George Brett RBI. Piece of cake. Brett later scored in the inning to make it a 2-0 Topeka game. In the 5th, Steve Balboni did what he does best, hitting a solo shot to make it 2-1. The Stingers scored in the bottom of the 5th on a Don Mattingly double. That was all she wrote. Bryn Smith went the distance, giving up just 2 hits and struck out 8 as the Stingers win game 1 by a score of 3 to 1. STINGERS LEAD 1-0. Brett hit a solo shot in the bottom of the first to get the quick lead. The Stingers made it 3-0 in the 6th on solo shots by Fisk and Mike Davis. Notice how I have yet to mention Albuquerque's scoring? I will. Just not yet. In the 8th, Topeka opened the floodgates. Vince Coleman hit a 2-out grounder to Willie Randolph, who booted it. Bad move. Topeka scored an unearned run. Scott Fletcher hits a 2-out bases loaded 2-RBI single. 2 more unearned runs. Herr and Brett smack a few more singles, driving in 3 more runs. In all, Topeka scored 6 times in the 8th, 5 of them thanks to Willie Randolph's error. The Stingrays made a feeble effort in the 9th, with Lloyd Moseby driving in a run on a sacrifice fly, but Albuquerque was shut down for the game. Topeka wins game 2 by a score of 9-1. For Albuquerque starter Joe Cowley, that would continue. In the first, Don Mattingly hit an RBI single, scoring Vince Coleman (who has scored in each of the first three playoff games). In the bottom of the first, Steve Balboni tied it up with an RBI single of his own. In the 2nd, Joe Cowley would get chased, thanks to a 3-run shot by Tommy Herr. Cowley's line for the day: 1 2/3 innings, 4 earned runs. 4-1 Stingers. The game would get quiet in the middle innings, but Albuquerque staged a comeback late in the game. In the 6th, Glenn Davis smacked a solo shot. 4-2 Stingers. In the 8th, Mike Brown hit a 2-out infield single, scoring Balboni from 3rd. 4-3 Stingers. Closer Dave Righetti came on board, and despite giving up 3 hits in 1 1/3 innings, gave up no runs. Topeka hangs on for the 4-3 win, and are just 1 game away from advancing to the GT conference finals. Albuquerque is in deep foo-doo in this one. STINGERS LEAD 3-0. In the bottom of the first, the Stingrays took the early lead when Glenn Davis singled in Moseby from 2nd. Vince Coleman tied it up in the 3rd on an RBI single, and a Brett RBI double scored Coleman, who has scored in all post-season games so far. Topeka lead, 2-1. The Stingrays made it a 2-all game in the 4th on a Rich Gedman home run. The Stingrays took back the lead in the 6th on a George Foster bases-loaded sacrifice fly. George Brett broke the game open for the Stingers in the 7th on a 3-run blast, but Albuquerque tied it back up at 5 all in the bottom of the 7th. No one would score in the 8th or 9th inning, so we would go to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Carlton Fisk hit a solo shot off the Stingrays' closer Roy Thomas. If the Stingrays were to keep in this one, they'd have to score in the bottom of the inning. But it was not to be. With 1 out, and closer Dave Righetti on the mound, runners on 2nd & 1st, Mike Brown hit into a double play, ending the game. Stingers win game 4 by a score of 6 to 5, and sweep the Stingrays 4 games to zip. STINGERS WIN SERIES 4-0.
