Aaron/Paige Conference Final: Aaron/Paige Conference Wildcard Milwaukee Mashers (97-65) vs. Aaron Division Winner Nettles ToWiggins (102-60). The Milwaukee Mashers destroyed the Albuquerque Apaches in the 1st round playoff matchup, outscoring Albuquerque 26-4 during a 4-0 sweep. The Mashers only used 6 pitchers in the brief series, with no starter having less than 8 innings pitched. 2B Bobby Grich has 5 runs scored. The Nettles ToWiggins were dominant throughout the season, and a big reason for that was MVP and triple crown winner Pedro Guerrero. Fellow infielders Ryne Sandberg and Keith Hernandez also made all-CDBL honors. The ToWiggins had 6 pitchers with double digit victories, with Moose Haas winning 15 and Charles Hudson 16. Terry Forster and Craig Lefferts split closer duty during the regular season, combining for 29 total saves for the pennant winning ToWiggins. The Mashers-ToWiggins matchup is a rematch from the AP finals last year. In the '84 conference finals, the upstart wildcard ToWiggins upset the pennant winner Mashers in 6 games to make the world series. Now, the learner has become the master, with the pennant winner ToWiggins having home court advantage over the wildcard Mashers. The ToWiggins have home field advantage, and the regular season series was tied 6-6. ***************************************************************************** GAME ONE - MILWAUKEE MASHERS (Reuschel) vs. NETTLES TOWIGGINS (Haas) Game one of a matchup between superpowers. The ToWiggins had yet to play a postseason game, so everyone would get a first look at how they'd perform in crunch time. If game 1 is any indication, they should perform well. Pedro Guerrero doubled in the 3rd and scored on a Harold Baines single. The ToWiggins scored again in the 4th when Moose Haas singled, scoring Baker from 3rd. The Mashers made it 2-1 on a Thad Bosley solo shot. Unfortunately for Milwaukee, the ToWiggins went into overdrive in the 7th inning, scoring 6 runs and chasing Reuschel out of the game. Guerrero smacked a 2-run homer, and Hayes, Carter, Haas and Hernandez all hit RBI singles. They scored again in the 8th, but it was just icing on the cake. The ToWiggins take game one by a score of 9-1. TOWIGGINS LEAD 1-0. Keith Hernadez hit a solo shot in the 3rd, Pedro Guerrero hit an RBI double for the 2-0 lead. Nick Esasky made it 2-1 with a solo shot in the 4th. Claudell Washington kept the lead at 2 runs with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the inning. The teams traded another run in the 6th, making the score 4-2. It looked like the ToWiggins would go 2-0 in the series .. that is, until the 8th inning. With 0 outs, and 2 Masher runners on base (1 due to error), Rickey Henderson hit an RBI double to make the ToWiggins' lead just 1 run. Again with 0 outs, Nick Esasky hit a fly ball out to Dusty Baker ... who drops it! 2 runs score, and Milwaukee has the 5-4 lead. With still 0 outs, MIke Young cranked a 3-run blast, making it an 8-4 lead. The ToWiggins never recoverd. Milwaukee wins 8-4, and takes home field advantage. SERIES TIED 1-1. The game started out simple enough, with Harold Baines driving in Templeton in the 3rd, and Milwaukee making it 1-all in the bottom of the 3rd when Chris Brown scored from 2nd on a Henderson single. The Mashers took the 4-1 lead in the 5th, when Chris Brown drove in Trammell, and Henderson smacked a 2-run shot. The Mashers padded their lead in the 7th when Chris Brown (again!) scored from 3rd on a double play ball (luckily there were only 0 outs when the DP occured!) In the 8th inning, the ToWiggins made their comeback. Von Hayes hit a bases loaded 2 RBI single. 5-3 Mashers. But the true test of the Mashers would come in the 9th. With 0 outs, closer Tom Hume on board, Hume walked Keith Hernandez. Garry Templeton singled and Hernandez moved to 3rd. Still 0 outs. Pedro Guerrero hit a looping ball to center field, scoring Keith Hernandez. Hume was done or the day. 5-4 Mashers. It was up to Doug Bair to close out the inning and win it for Milwaukee. But he couldn't deliver. Still with 0 outs, Harold Baines singled in a run. Tie ballgame. The ToWiggins took the lead in the 9th when Ryne Sandberg hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Pedro Guerrero from 3rd. 6-5 ToWiggins. Now in the bottom of the 9th, it was up to the ToWiggins to preserve their lead. Closer Craig Lefferts on the mound. With 0 outs, Thad Bosley walked (Bosley, Chris Brown and Rickey Henderson have been the keys to Milwaukee in the post-season). Chris Brown was hot all game. So what does he do in the most critical at-bat of the game? Double play grounder. 0 outs now become 2 outs. Rickey Henderson flied out to end the game. Nettles scored 5 runs in the last 2 innings to win the 6-5 thriller. SERIES TIED 2-2.
