1985 CDBL World Series Preview AP Conference Wildcard Milwaukee Mashers (97-65) vs. Tiant Division Winner Boston Bulldogs (90-72) Milwaukee & Boston are the two teams you would have expected to go home in the conference finals. Both teams defeated teams with better regular season records. Milwaukee finished off the Nettles ToWiggins in 6 games, and Boston defeated the Topeka Stingers in a 7 game series. Rickey Henderson has been the key to Milwaukee's post-season, scoring 9 runs and driving in 12 in 10 games. Mike Young has greatly benefited from Henderson and 3B Chris Brown's high on base average. Young has hit 5 homers in the post-season, and has driven in 15 runs. Mike Krukow and Scott Sanderson have been excellent in the post-season, winning a combined 4 games in 5 starts. For the Bulldog's, they've gotten a big boost out of leadoff hitter Toby Harrah. Harrah seems to be on-base every game, which has almost been true. Through 10 games, Harrah has walked 13 times and scored 8. 3B Darrell Evans has 9 RBI. The key to the Bulldog's post-season success has been it's pitching, which has a 2.20 ERA in 11 games. David "Don't call me Robert" Palmer and Mike Witt are a combined 5-0 in 5 starts, with each pitcher having an ERA below 1.0. It looks to be a case of the Masher's high powered offense vs. the Bulldog's imposing pitching. Boston won the season series 4-2, and have home field advantage (due to pennant winner vs wildcard) ************************************************************************** GAME ONE - MILWAUKEE MASHERS (Reuschel) vs. BOSTON BULLDOGS (Alexander) The Bulldogs were playing on their home turf in game one, and certainly made it count. In the first inning, Bill Buckner hit an RBI single. 1-0 Bulldogs. A Rick Reuschel wild pitch scored Dale Murphy from 3rd. Brook Jacoby hit a 2-RBI double to make it a 4-run Boston inning. Darrell Evans hit a sacrifice fly in the 2nd, scoring Toby Harrah from 3rd. Not a good start for the Mashers. They did turn a defensive gem in the 4th. With 0 outs, runners on 2nd & 3rd, a ball was hit to Chris Brown, who stepped on 3rd, threw to 2nd, and the throw to first yielded the post-season's first triple play. The Mashers put themselves on the board in the 7th with a Greg Brock 2-run dinger, but the Bulldogs simply put more distance between them. They scored 7 times in the 7th & 8th innings, capped off by an 8th inning 3-run blast by Brian Downing. Boston wins game one by a score of 12 to 2. BULLDOGS LEAD 1-0. In the third, Gary Matthews hit a solo shot for a 1-0 Milwaukee lead. Rickey Henderson made it 2-0 Mashers in the 6th with a homer of his own. Mike Krukow held the Bulldogs at bay for most of the game, going into the 9th inning with a shutout. With 0 outs, Krukow strikes out Evans, but Dale Murphy hit a double and scored on Darrell Porter's double. So much for the shutout. Closer Tom Hume came on board to preserve the game. Buckner grounded out, holding Porter at 2nd. With 2 outs, Brook Jacoby grounded out to Trammell. Milwaukee wins game 2 by a score of 2-1, and take home field advantage with them to Milwaukee for the next 3 games. SERIES TIED 1-1. Forsch gave himself the lead in the 3rd, when he doubled and scored on a Chris Brown RBI single. Boston evened things up in the 4th when Dale Murphy doubled and scored on Bill Buckner's sacrifice fly. We move now to the bottom of the 8th, with the score still tied 1-1. Sammy Stewart is now pitching for the Bulldogs, and the bases are loaded, with 1 out, facing John Shelby .. who got his first walk of the post-season. A runner scores from third, and the Mashers are up 2-1. Then, Mickey Tettleton came to bat. A double play would end the inning ... but Tettleton hits a double, clearing the bases. 5-1 Mashers game. Bobby Grich sent Tettleton home, along with himself, smacking a 2-run shot. 7-1 Mashers game, capping off a 6 run 8th inning. The Bulldogs scored once in the 9th, but it wasn't enough. Milwaukee wins game 4 7-2 and are now 1 game away from being CDBL champs. MASHERS LEAD 3-1. Milwaukee got game five off to a rousing start in the first, when Mike Young smashed a grand slam off Doyle Alexander. In the fifth, game still 4-0, Shelby singled, moved to 2nd on a wild pitch, and scored on a Grich single. In the 6th, it only got worse for Boston, when Milwaukee scored 4 times, capped off by a 2-RBI double by Alan Trammell. Mike Young came through again in the 7th with a 3-run homer (he seems to have hit a lot of these lately). Rick Reuschel was golden all throughout the game, pitching a shutout. In the top of the 9th, 2 outs, Reuschel got Brian Downing to ground out to Grich, ending game five and the series. Milwaukee wins game 5 by a score of 12-0, wins the series 4 games to 1, and are the 1985 CDBL World Series Champions. MASHERS WIN 4-1. *** MILWAUKEE MASHERS 1985 CDBL WORLD CHAMPIONS *** PLAYOFF MVP: Mike Young was quite good (7 homers, 22 RBI in 14 games), but MVP honors go to Rickey Henderson. In 15 games, Henderson batted .361, slugged .689, scored 15 times and drove in 14 runs. Wow.
