1985 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Aaron/Paige Conference Wildcard Milwaukee Mashers (97-65) vs. Paige Division Winner Albuquerque Apaches (83-79). All in all, Milwaukee's regular season was a smashing success. They won 97 games, which gave them the 3rd best record in the league. Unfortunately, the 1st best record belonged to the division rivals Nettles ToWiggins, so the Mashers had to settle for a wildcard spot. Rickey Henderson was amazing, scoring a league record 130 runs, drove in 95 runs, and made 1st team all-CDBL honors. You name it, Henderson can do it. Nick Esasky and Greg Brock were the other big guns as well, each driving in 80+ runs. On pitching, Rick Reuschel was the staff ace this year, with a 2.60 ERA and 14 wins. Mike Krukow won 16. All-pro closer Tom Hume had a tiny 2.28 ERA with 8 wins and 30 saves. The Apaches were relatively quiet all season, and seemed destined for a non-eventful 3rd place showing. But they caught fire in the last few weeks of the season, and stormed ahead of the Lush and Hurdlers to take their first pennant. All-pro Andre Dawson was the man for Albuquerque, smacking 31 dingers and driving in 90 runs. What really got the Apaches to the post-season was their pitching. Four starters had double digit wins with ERA's 3.11 and below. Rookie starter Ted Higuera make the all-CDBL 2nd team. The overall team ERA was an above-average 3.19. Closer Ron Davis saved 28 games. This looks to be a contest between the Mashers' hitting and the Apaches' pitching. The Apaches won the season series 5-3, and have home field advantage. ***************************************************************************** MILWAUKEE MASHERS (Reuschel) AT ALBUQUERQUE APACHES (Stieb) Game one turned out to be a pitcher's duel between aces. The first score of the game was by the Apaches in the bottom of the 2nd. Glenn Wilson tripled, and Bob Boone smacked a 2-out RBI single. 1-0 Apaches. In the 5th, the Mashers made their move. Bobby Grich walked, was sacrificed to 2nd by Trammell, Reuschel walked, and Grice scored from 2nd on a Bosley RBI single. Chris Brown was walked to load the bases, with just 1 out. Henderson hit an RBI single. 2-1 Mashers, 1 out. With the bases still loaded, Greg Brock nearly smacks a grand slam, but settles for the sacrifice fly. The Mashers would score 3 in the 5th ining. That's all that was needed. Tom Hume pitched the 9th to get the save as the Mashers win 3-1 and take home field advantage. MASHERS LEAD 1-0. Walt Terrell was in trouble before the first out was recorded. That's because he gave up 3 straight singles without an out en route to a 2-run Masher 1st inning. They piled on 7 runs in the 4th and 5th inning. Thad Bosley and Chris Brown combined for 6 total runs. Mike Krukow was stellar, holding the Apaches to 5 hits over 9 scoreless innings. Milwaukee wins game 2 by a convincing 10-0 margin. MASHERS LEAD 2-0. They got a big jump in the 3rd, when Nick Esasky hit a 2-RBI single. Milwaukee scored yet again in the 4th, when Alan Trammell hit a bases loaded RBI single. 3-0 Milwaukee. The Mashers kept pummeling the Apaches in the 8th, when Cecil Fielder hit a 2 RBI double. Fielder showed off his foot speed later in the inning, when he became the 3rd out after being thrown out at home after trying to score from second. I guess you can't win 'em all. Speaking of not winning them all, the Apaches made a furious comeback in the top of the 9th. Buck Martinez hit a 2-run shot to make it 5-2. The Apaches put 2 more runners on base, when closer Tom Hume was called to the mound. Hume got things under control, getting Steve Sax to fly out to get the save. Milwaukee wins game 3 5-2, and are a win away from a rematch with the Nettles ToWiggins in the AP conference final. MASHERS LEAD 3-0. To tell you what kind of series this was, in the bottom of the 7th, with a 3-1 Masher's lead, Milwaukee pitcher Bob Forsch blasted a 2-run shot. Milwaukee added 3 runs in the 8th, but it was just to entertain the rabid Milwaukee fans in the stands.
