Gehrig/Tiant Conference Final: Gehrig Division Winner Topeka Stingers (99-63) vs. Tiant Division Winner Boston Bulldogs (90-72) 1984 was a quiet year for the Stingers and the Bulldogs, but 1985 saw their rise to prominance. The Stingers were expected to run away with their division (and did), while the Bulldogs were expected to be a tough competitor in a close division (which they were, and ended up pennant winners). In the top of the 2nd, Brook Jacoby drove in Carmelo Castillo for the first run of the game. George Brett gave Topeka the temporary lead in the 3rd with a 2-run blast. Castillo tied things up in the 4th with a solo shot of his own. 2-2 going into the 6th. A close game so far, but Topeka proceeded to turn on the engines, scoring 8 runs in the next 3 innings. led by a Kevin Bass homer in the 6th and a Kevin Bass RBI double in the 7th. In the 5th, the Bulldogs scored when Carmelo Castillo reached 2nd base on error, and was driven in by Brook Jacoby. The Bulldogs made it 2-0 in the 6th on a Brookens bases loaded sacrifice fly. The Stingers closed the gap to 1 run in the bottom of the 6th on a Don Mattingly RBI double. The Bulldogs marched on in the 7th & 8th, with a Rob Deer solo shot in the 7th and Dale Murphy driving in Toby Harrah from 3rd in the 8th. 4-1 Bulldogs. The Stingers were 7-43 in the regular season when losing after the 7th inning. Apparantly, nobody informed George Brett of this statistic. Brett smashed a 2-run shot in the 8th to make it a 4-3 Bulldog lead. Boston closer Willie Hernandez was brought in early to shut down the Stinger resurgence. Didn't work. Kevin Bass gives the Stingers the lead with a 2-run tater. 5-4 Stingers. We move now to the top of the 9th, Stingers closer Dave Righetti on the mound. 3 simple outs and the Stingers move to game 7. Didn't happen. Darrell Evans hit an RBI single to tie up the game. With 1 out, Brian Downing singled. Toby Harrah singled. The bases were loaded with 1 out, and Dave Righetti was through. All the Bulldogs needed was a deep fly ball and the trip to the world series was theirs. Bill Buckner was at bat. But Buckner fails, grounding to Tommy Herr, who threw out the runner at home. Bases still loaded, 2 outs, with Jorge Orta at the plate. The count would go to 3 balls, 2 strikes before Orta's fate was revealed. Orta flied out to Vince Coleman, ending the inning. Sammy Stewart made it an uneventful bottom of the 9th. We would go to extra innings. Stingers reliever Don Aase closed down the Bulldogs side in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th, Sammy Stewart continued to pitch. With 1 out, runners on 1st & 3rd, Stewart faced Carlton Fisk. Fisk lines one between shortstop and 3B, scoring Tommy Herr from 3rd. Topeka wins game 6 by a score of 6-5. The series moves to the conclusive game 7, where the winner earns a ticket to the CDBL world series. SERIES TIED 3-3. The battle of battles. The contest of contests. One game, winner take all (or at least at trip to the world series). It's too bad Stingers' Don Sutton didn't show up for the game, as this one was all Bulldogs. In the first, Brian Downing hit a leadoff homer. In the 2nd, Oddibe McDowell hit a homer. 2-0 Bulldogs. In the third, Darrell Evans hit a 2-run shot. 4-0 Boston. Brook Jacoby bashed a 3-run dinger in the 5th. 7-0 Boston. Don Sutten lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up 6 earned runs. But the Bulldogs were not done yet. Longtime Bulldogs star Dale Murphy got into the action in the 6th, with a 2 run shot. Bill Buckner hit an RBI single in the 8th to make it a commanding 10-0 lead. The Stingers never recovered. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, Boston reliever Bob Gibson got Mike Davis to ground out to Brook Jacoby. Boston wins game 7 by a score of 10-1, and advance to the 1985 CDBL world series to face the Milwaukee Mashers.
