CDBL WORLD SERIES PREVIEW Nettles ToWiggins vs. Wasatch Mountaineers The first ever CDBL world series features the league wildcard going against the Gehrig divison winner. The matchup also guarantees one thing: the winner will have a last name of Ogle. GM/owner Jamie Ogle has led his ToWiggins past the Hurdlers and Mashers, who sported the two best records in the league. GM/owner Robert Ogle has taken his Mountaineers past division rival Homestead and conference rival Dark Valley. Each team has featured 3 or 4 hitters who have punished the opposing team's pitchers. None more so than the Mountaineers' Don Baylor, who through 11 games is hitting .333 with a .690 slugging percenteage and 21 RBI's. Catcher Gary Carter is hitting .439 with 12 runs scored, and speedy Ozzie Smith has 11 runs scored. The ToWiggins' Ryne Sandberg put up 100+ RBI's in the regular season, but with poor on base and slugging percentages. Well, he's made up for that in the post season, hitting .426/.456/.667 in 13 games with 11 runs scored. Von Hayes also has 11 runs scored. Outfielder Terry Puhl is hitting .347 with a .592 slugging percentage. On the pitching side, each staff has found a post-season ace. Dennis Eckersley is 2-1 with a 3.3 ERA in 30 innings for the Mountaineers, while Frank Viola is 3-0 with a 2.1 ERA in 30 innings for the ToWiggins. The lefty-heavy ToWiggins won't be as big of problem for the Mountaineers as they were for the Mashers. In fact, the Mountaineers did better in the regualr season against lefties than righties, hitting .290 vs lefties, but only .249 vs right handers. And the Mountaineers won the regular season series 5 games to 1 over the ToWiggins. On the other hand, as the ToWiggins have shown, you can just throw the regular season out the door, as the ToWiggins have beaten the odds twice in a row to reach the world series. They'll try to do it 3 series in a row, as the Mountaineers have home field advantage. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WORLD SERIES GAME ONE: Nettles ToWiggins (Frank Viola) at Wasatch Mountaineers (Dennis Eckersley). The first third of the game featured no hit performances from both starters. The first hit by either team occurred in the bottom of the 3rd, when a Bill Doran single scored Dennis Eckersley (who had walked) to give the Mountaineers the 1-0 lead. The Mountaineers made it 3-0 in the 5th on RBI's by Baylor and Carter. The ToWiggins jumped right back into things in the 6th, when Terry Puhl smacked a 2 run shot. Unfortunately for the ToWiggins, the Mountaineers had one of their big innings in the 6th. Dave Kingman started things off with a solo shot, but the big damage came later in the inning. With the bases loaded, Nettles reliever Dan Spillner faced Larry Herndon. Where's the beef? In Herndon's bat! Herndon smacks a grand slam, making it an 8-2 game. The ToWiggins never recovered, as Eck cruised to the complete game. MOUNTAINEERS LEAD 1-0. The Mountaineers drew first blood in the 5th on an RBI double by Larry Herndon. The ToWiggins took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 5th on RBI's by Sandberg, Candelaria and Von Hayes. We move now to the top of the 8th. With Doug Sisk on the mound and Gary Carter at first, Don Baylor shows that he has the stuff by nailing one over the fence. Instant 3-3 ballgame. And now, the tragic ending ... for the Mountaineers. In the bottom of the 9th with 0 outs, Garry Templeton hits a pitch that Don Baylor can't quite reach ... and winds up with a triple. The Mountaineers intentionally load the bases (?) with 0 outs to face Keith Hernandez. The Mountaineers would need a miracle, but they wouldn't get it. Hernandez hits a single, and Templeton scores. ToWiggins win it 4-3 in their last at-bat. TOWIGGINS LEAD 2-1. In the first, with 0 outs, Ozzie Smith singled, stole second, and scored on Bill Doran's single. The ToWiggins took the 3-1 lead in the 3rd on RBI's by Hernandez, Sandberg and Lansford. The Mountaineers closed the gap to 3-2 in the 4th on a solo shot by Gary Carter. In the 5th, the Mountaineers broke things open. Larry Herndon's single scored Ozzie Smith from 2nd to tie things up at 3. With 2 men on base, Gary Carter hits into a double play, but with 0 outs, Bill Doran scores from 3rd. Later in the inning Dave Kingman would smack an RBI single to make it 5-3 Wasatch. The ToWiggins made their run in the 7th. Ken Landreaux made it to second on a 2-base throwing error by Candy Maldonado. Landreaux would score on a Lansford RBI single, closing the gap to 5-4. Then, with a man aboard, reliever Bill Dawley would face Willie Aikens, who made only his second appearance of the post-season. What happens? Aikens becomes Mr. MVP! Aikens blasts a 2-run shot. Nettles takes the lead 6-5, thanks to 3 unearned runs in the 7th. The last shot for Wasatch would come in the 9th inning. With 1 out, Don Baylor wound up at second on a 2-base throwing error. Chili Davis advanced Baylor over to third. In the 9th inning, with 2 outs, ToWiggins' reliever Doug Sisk faced Dave Kingman, who had gone 3 for 4 in the game. It was all up to Dave to save the Mountaineers. But Kingman couldn't deliver, grounding out to end the game. The ToWiggins take game four by a score of 6 to 5, and take a commanding 3-1 lead in the world series. TOWIGGINS LEAD 3-1. You could tell both sides were psyched for this one. The ToWiggins, just 1 game away from winning it all, were trying to win it on home ground. The Mountaineers were trying to move the series back to Wasatch where they'd reclaim home field advantage. Frank Viola and Dennis Eckersley were dominant as usual, shutting out the opposing team for 6 straight innings. But, someone had to give, and luckily for the Mountaineers it was Frank Viola. In the 7th, Dave Kingman and Candy Maldonado smacked back to back homers to make it 2-0. Gary Carter put the icing on the cake with an RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Dennis Eckersley continued his dominance, throwing a 3-hit shutout. The Mountaineers retake home field advantage, and take the series back to Wasatch for the conclusion. TOWIGGINS LEAD 3-2. The Mountaineers had an early start, scoring a run in the 3rd on a Chili Davis RBI single. The Mountaineers made it 2-0 in the 6th when Howard Johnson hit a sacrifice fly. Then, later in the inning, Rick Sutcliffe had his 2nd hit of the post-season, which turned out to be a 2-RBI double. When the pitchers hit, they make it count. 4-0 Mountaineers. Meanwhile, Rick Sutcliffe was dominating the ToWiggins, throwing 8 scoreless innings. Unfortunately for Wasatch, there's 9 innings to a game. Sutcliffe loses it completely in the 9th, loading the bases, and wound up walking Pedro Guerrero to force in Keith Hernandez from 3rd. 4-1 Mountaineers. With 1 out, Wasatch reliever Bill Dawley pitched to Alex Trevino, who hit a sacrifice fly to score Terry Puhl. 4-2 Mountaineers, but with 2 outs. All Dawley had to do was get pinch hitter Ken Landreaux out .. but that post season clutch play kicked in. Landreaux takes Dawley out of the park! Just like that, the ToWiggins ruin Sutcliffe's outing, and take a 5-4 lead. Suddenly, the ToWiggins go from waiting for game seven to being 3 outs from winning the world championship. Craig Lefferts came on to pitch the 9th for the ToWiggins. Craig "post season 16 IP, 0.00 ERA" Lefferts. Lefferts got Ozzie Smith to ground out. 2 outs left before the ToWiggins could begin their celebration. Next batter was Chili Davis. Davis singles. Lefferts reconcentrated his efforts on the next Mountaineer batter, Gary Carter. And wouldn't you know it, Carter had his biggest hit of the season. Carter bashed a Lefferts' pitch over the wall, scoring Davis and himself to win game six by a score of 6 to 5. The series and the season concludes with game seven at Wasatch. SERIES TIED 3-3. The ToWiggins closed the lead to 4 in the 4th on an RBI single by Bonnell. But the Mountaineers were too much. In the 7th, Mike Armstrong faced Ozzie Smith ... who takes him out of the park! Ozzie had his first homer of the post season. 6-1 Mountaineers. The ToWiggins would make it 6-2 in the 8th on a Washington shot, but that's all the ToWiggins could muster. Closer Bill Dawley got Guerrero, Templeton and Porter to ground out, clinching game seven for the Mountaineers, who become the first ever CDBL champs. MOUNTAINEERS WIN SERIES 4-3, 1984 CDBL CHAMPS.
