Aaron-Paige Conference Championship: Nettles ToWiggins vs. Milwaukee Mashers Mashers don't face the team they expected to, thanks to the Hurdlers upset by the ToWiggins. And there probably isn't a team they'd want to face less than the ToWiggins. Why? Three words: Left handed pitching. The ToWiggins have 3 of their 4 starting pitchers as lefties. This means that Masher mainstays Mike Young, Mike Easler and Dwyane Murphy will see limited playing time or limited effectiveness in most of the games. And the right hander in the ToWiggins rotation is all-pro Bill Laskey. Several ToWiggins batters have gotten red-hot in the playoffs, too. Ryne Sandberg, Terry Puhl and Von Hayes each have OPS's of 1.100 or greater. Shorstop Garry Templeton is hitting .360. Still, one shouldn't plan the ToWiggins' championship party just yet. The lefty-intensive ToWiggins pitching staff will face some tough Masher sluggers in Bobby Clark, Joe Morgan and Jim Sundberg. Rickey Henderson and Alan Trammell don't care which what kind of pitcher they face.. they hit both very well. And the Masher pitching staff has a 3.15 ERA during the playoffs, including 15 shutout innings by ace Alejandro Pena. And Milwaukee has home field advantage. The Mashers won the regular season series over the ToWiggins by a 7-5 margin. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GAME ONE: Nettles ToWiggins (Frank Viola) at Milwaukee Mashers (Alejandro Pena). Wow. The ToWiggins and Mashers put on quite a display of pitching today. Neither team could score a run until the 4th inning, when Hernandez & Puhl were issued consecutive walks for the ToWiggins with 0 outs, were moved over to 3rd & 2nd, and Hernandez scored on an RBI single by Dusty Baker. Meanwhile, the Mashers had a devil of a time trying to hit off of Frank Viola. Viola was so impressive today, that he had a no-hitter through 6 innings. His no-hitter was finally broken up in the 7th inning, when Rickey Henderson doubled. Apparantly the stigma of giving up a no-hitter was too much for Frank, because he would only last 7 innings (but it was 7 innings of shutout ball). Dependable closer Craig Lefferts would finish out the game. We move now to the bottom of the 9th inning. 1-0 ToWiggins lead, Lefferts on the mound, Alan Trammell at 2nd base, and Rickey Henderson at the plate. Henderson hits his 2nd double of the game, and Trammell decides to make a run for it by going home. But Trammell underestimated Ken Landreaux's arm, as the Landreaux to Templeton to Trevino throw gets to home before Trammell does, and Trammell is tagged out. Thus ended the Masher's chance in the 9th, and the ToWiggins take game one by a slim 1-0 score. TOWIGGINS LEAD 1-0. After being humiliated by Frank Viola and company in game one, the Masher offense was hoping to do better in game two. The Masher corps came alive in the 2nd, when Grich doubled, and was doubled in by Gross's double. Then the Mashers got a big at bat from ... Mark Bailey? You can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him. Bailey with a 2 run shot. As it turns out, this was all the Mashers could do, as they would not score for the rest of the game. But 3 runs was all the Mashers would need, as Scott Sanderson was golden. Sanderson threw 8 shutout innings, scattering 5 hits. Brent Gaff came on in the 9th to close the ToWiggins out for good, as the Mashers even up the series. SERIES TIED 1-1. The ToWiggins got things off to an efficient start. In the bottom of the first, Ray Burris' first pitch to Von Hayes resulted in a Hayes double. Ray Burris' first pitch (and second overall) to Keith Hernandez resulted in an RBI single, giving the ToWiggins the quick 1-0 lead. The ToWiggins made it 2-0 in the 4th on a Guerrero RBI single. The Mashers came right back in the 5th when consecutive singles by Easler, Burris, Clark and Morgan scored Easler and Burris. The ToWiggins and Mashers traded runs for runs in the bottom of the 5th and top of the 6th, when each team scored 3 times. The score remained tied at 5 each until the top of the 8th, when a Chris Brown double scored Dwayne Murphy and Jim Sundberg to make it a 7-5 Masher lead. The Mashers added another run in the 8th, but they had already scored plenty, as Ray Burris kept the ToWiggins scoreless after the 5th inning, throwing a *141* pitch complete game to get the win. The Mashers have taken back home field advantage. MASHERS LEAD 2-1. Honeycutt is rewarded for his hustle when he scores on a Claudel Washington single. 3-0, Nettles. The Mashers make it a 3-1 game in the 4th on a Sundberg RBI double. The ToWiggins pad their lead in the 4th on a Washington sacrifice fly and a Landreaux RBI single. The Mashers whittle away at the ToWiggins lead in the 7th, when Bryan Little smacked an RBI single to make it a 5-2 ToWiggins game. Rick Honeycutt continued his good day in the 7th, when he had his 2nd RBI of the game to make it a 6-2 game. The ToWiggins loaded the bases full of Masher batters in the 8th with 0 outs, but the Mashers could only get 2 runs out of it. The ToWiggins end up winning game 4 by a score of 7-4. SERIES TIED 2-2. With the series tied at 2 each, game five was not a make or break for either team. What was at stake was who would go back to Milwaukee with a 3-2 lead. Keith Hernandez got off to a rousing start, smacking a solo shot off Pena in the 1st. Joe Morgan tied it at 1 in the 3rd on a RBI double. In the 3rd, a Nick Esasky throwing error let Von Hayes get to 2nd. This would prove to be costly for the Mashers, as Keith Hernandez smacked an RBI double to drive him in. A Terry Puhl single made it a 3-1 Nettles lead, with 2 of the runs unearned. The Mashers put up a run in the 4th, but the ToWiggins countered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring 2 runs to make it a 5-2 lead. They traded a run for a run in the 7th for a 6-3 game. The last Masher opportunity was in the 9th inning. Easler grounded out, but it allowed Nick Esasky to score to make it a 6-4 Nettles lead. But Frank Viola pulled through, throwing a complete game to get his 3rd win of the post season, as the ToWiggins take a 3-2 series lead heading back to Milwaukee. TOWIGGINS LEAD 3-2. The ToWiggins know how to win on enemy turf, doing it against Hurdle Mills in the 1st round, and doing it in game one of the conference championship series against the Mashers. The Mashers took ToWiggins pitcher Bill Laskey out of the park early in the 3rd, when Mike Easler smacked a 2-run shot. The ToWiggins nickel and dimed their way back to a 2-2 tie on runs in the 4th & 5th inning. The ToWiggins took the lead in the 6th when Alex Trevino hit an RBI single, which was just his 2nd hit of the post-season. Trevino's hit also advanced Ryne Sandberg to third base, who scored when Scott Sanderson threw a wild pitch. 4-2 ToWiggins. In the 7th, the ToWiggins broke things open. Von Hayes reached base on an error by Mike Easler, which proved to be critical for the ToWiggins' big inning. With 2 outs, Terry Puhl hit an RBI single, scoring Von Hayes. Then, with the bases loaded, Alex Trevino has his biggest hit of the season, cranking out a bases clearing 3-RBI double. Trevino is rewarded for his bat by being driven in on a Pedro Guerrero RBI. 9-2 Nettles lead, with 4 runs unearned. The Mashers put a dent in the ToWiggins' lead in the 8th when Mike Easler bashed a 3 run homer. But alas, the ToWiggins mighty offense was too much for Milwaukee. Terry Puhl put the icing on the cake in the 9th with a solo shot, and Craig Lefferts pitched a scoreless 9th to give the ToWiggins the 10-5 victory, taking the series 4 games to 2, and earning a trip to the CDBL world series.
