Nettles ToWiggins at Hurdle Mills Hurdlers: The Hurdlers were pre-season favorites to dominate the league, and they didn't disappoint. Hurdle Mills won a league best 103 games, and boasted the league's best offense. 1st team all-pro Dwight Evans leads a murderer's row of sluggers, including all pro 3B Buddy Bell, and 1B Andy Thornton. Center fielder Harold Baines was traded midway through the season for Dave Collins, whose speed and on-base ability will be a big asset to the offense. In addition to good hitting, the Hurdlers had great pitching as well, finishing with an above average 3.61 ERA. Mike Smithson, Phil Niekro, Rick Rhoden and Charlie Lea are all quality starters, and closer Dave Smith showed that he can shut down the opposition in the 9th. Overall, the Hurdlers are very tough to beat. The ToWiggins got to the post-season the hard way, by fighting off the Arkham Investigators and DC Riots all the way until the end of the season to capture the league wildcard. The ToWiggins boast 4 stellar starters in Frank Viola, Rick Honeycutt, John Candelaria and Bill Laskey (Viola and Laskey earned all-pro honors). Craig Lefferts was an iron man in relief, throwing 114 innings and saving 25 games. On the hitting side, the ToWiggins boast several threats. All-pro 2B Ryne Sandberg only had a .688 OPS, but was good enough to drive in 106 runs. Keith Hernandez is a masterful tablesetter, with a .390 OBA and 120 runs scored during the season. Quality sluggers Terry Puhl, Von Hayes and Carney Lansford round out the lineup. Overview: In head-to-head meetings, both teams went 4-4. Can the ToWiggins pull out a miracle against the best team in the league? * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GAME ONE: Nettles ToWiggins (Frank Viola) at Hurdle Mills Hurlders (Rick Rhoden). Game one got ugly really fast, but the ugliness wasn't from the team you'd expect. In the top of the 1st, the ToWiggins opened up the floodgates. With Von Hayes and Keith Hernandez reaching base with 0 outs, Terry Puhl hit a RBI double. Then, Alan Ashby drove in 2 more runs to make it a 3-0 ToWiggins lead. Claudel Washington and Gary Templeton each drove in an additional run to make it a 5-0 ToWiggins lead in the top of the 1st. The ToWiggins were so effective that Pedro Guerrero was the 1st batter to record an out, and he was 6th in the lineup. The Hurdlers would do some damage of their own in the bottom of the 1st. Dave Collins and Dwight Evans reached base, and 2 consecutive wild pitches by Frank Viola allowed Collins to score. An Andy Thornton RBI made the score 5-2. But this was the closest the Hurdlers could get, as the ToWiggins kept piling on the runs in later innings to take home field advantage away from the Hurdlers in the convincing 10-2 victory. The Hurdler pitching certainly got off to a better start in game 2 than in game 1. In fact, both Niekro and Laskey were dominant, each throwing 5 innings of shutout ball. But, alas, sooner or later someone has to score a run, and luckily for the Hurdlers, it was them, with a Dwight Evans solo shot off Laskey to give the Hurdlers the 1-0 lead. But the ToWiggins had their big inning in the 8th, when Von Hayes doubled, scoring pinch hitter Dusty Baker. Hayes scored on a Keith Hernandez single, and Ryne Sandberg drove in Keith Hernandez to make it a 3-1 ToWiggins lead. ToWiggins closer Craig Lefferts went 1-2-3 in the 9th to get the save, as the ToWiggins won the second game of the series 3-1. TOWIGGINS LEAD 2-0. The ToWiggins go the early jump in the bottom of the first on a bases loaded RBI single by Ryne Sandberg. In the top of the 2nd, the Hurdlers put some runs on the board when a Garry Templeton error led to a Wockenfuss score. Cesaro Cedeno scored on a Charlie Lea fielder's choice to make it 2-1 Hurdle Mills. Buddy Bell capped off the inning with a RBI single, making it a 3-1 Hurdler lead. In the top of the 4th, with the score 4-2, Dwight Evans smacked an RBI triple, making it 5-2 and ending the day for ToWiggins pitcher John Candelaria, who went 3 2/3 innings with 6 runs, 3 unearned. Andy Thornton padded the Hurdler lead in the 4th with a 2-run shot to make it a commanding 7-2 lead. In the bottom of the 4th, Hurdler pitcher Charlie Lea ran into trouble of his own. Keith Hernandez and Terry Puhl each had RBI's, and Alan Ashby hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-5 Hurdler game. In the bottom of the 5th, the ToWiggins inched closer to the Hurdlers, when Sandberg doubled with 0 outs, prompting the Hurdlers coach to pull Lea after just 4 innings. Guerrero moved Sandberg to third base, and Garry Templeton smacked an RBI single to make it a 7-6 Hurdler game. The Hurdlers would score 3 more in the 6th and 8th innings to make it a 10-6 game. We move now to the bottom of the 9th, with Hurdler closer Dave Smith on the mound. Smith gave up a single to Dusty Baker, who was then driven in on a Ryne Sandberg triple. The next batter, Pedro Guerrero, singled, scoring Sandberg and making it a 10-8 game. Smith picked the wrong time to lose his stuff, giving up 4 hits without recording an out. Goose Gossage comes on board to try and save the Hurdler win. Gossage gets Bonnell to ground out, which allows Guerrero to score, making it a 10-9 game, but also got an out. But Gossage was able to deliver where Dave Smith wasn't, and got the final 2 outs to preserve the Hurdler victory. TOWIGGINS LEAD 2-1. The ToWiggins tied it up in the bottom of the 5th, when Alex Trevino sacrificed in Pedro Guerrero, and Rick Honeycutt put the ToWiggins up 2-1 on a fielder's choice RBI. Then, in the top of the 6th, the Hurdlers retook the lead on a 2 RBI double by Cesar Cedeno. The Hurdlers added 4 more runs in the next 3 innings, but the pitching shut down the ToWiggins the rest of the way, as the Hurdlers re-took home field advantage in the 7-2 victory. SERIES TIED 2-2. In game one, the Hurdlers got blown out. Game five featured the two staff aces in a rematch, but on different turf. Terry Puhl got things started for the ToWiggins in the first on a 2-run shot. The Hurdlers tied it up in the 3rd, when Dave Collins tripled & scored on an Evans sacrifice. Andy Thornton topped off the inning with a solo shot. Evidentally Viola was a little under the weather, because he left after the 5th inning after throwing 89 pitches. Relieving Viola was closer Craig Lefferts, which seems odd for the 6th inning. But it was a move that payed off, as Lefferts threw 4 shutout innings. And he was rewarded with a win, after Pedro Guerrero put the ToWiggins in the lead for good with a solo shot, and the ToWiggins went on to win game five by a score of 4-2. The league wildcard ToWiggins are now just 1 game from advancing to the conference finals. TOWIGGINS LEAD 3-2. The ToWiggins have had great luck winning in Hurdle Mills. Could they close out the Hurdlers on their home turf? We first move to the bottom of the 4th, where the Hurdlers made some noise. Lee Lacy doubled, and was driven in by an RBI single from Ron Washington. With Washington on base, and with 2 outs, the ToWiggins intentionally walked Chris "0-fer" Bando to face Phil Niekro. It would turn out to be a costly mistake. Niekro had some clutch hitting, driving in both runners with a 2-out double to give the Hurdlers a 3-0 lead. The ToWiggins cut the lead to 1 in the 5th on RBI's by Sandberg and Templeton. The Hurdlers made it a 4-2 game in the 7th when Dwight Evans drove in Tim Flannery. We move now to the top of the 9th, with 2 outs against the ToWiggins, and Dave Smith on the mound for the Hurdlers. Ryne Sandberg hits a towering fly out to Jorge Orta .. who drops it! Sandberg gets to 2nd on the error. The next batter is Pedro Guerrero, who smacks a ball to Buddy Bell .. who boots it! Guerrero gets to first, and Sandberg moves to third. The next batter is Tim Foli, who singles, scoring Sandberg and shrinking the Hurdler lead to just 1 run. Dave Smith, who pitched 2 2/3 innings, was done. Once Smith left, the Hurdlers were able to get things finished. Mark Thurmond got Doug Flynn to fly out, and preserved the Hurdler win by a score of 4 to 3. Game seven will be played to decide who gets all the marbles (or at least a trip to the AP conference finals). SERIES TIED 3-3. The ToWiggins made it a 4-0 game in the 4th when Pedro Guerrero's sacrifice fly scored Terry Puhl. The planets just were not in alignment for the Hurdlers today, as the ToWiggins went on to win game seven by a score of 7-2.
