CDBL 1984 MOST VALUABLE PLAYER 2ND RUNNER UP: Don Baylor, OF, Wasatch Mountaineers NAME AVG OBP SPC G AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI BB K HB IW SB CS Baylor .261 .328 .549 138 532 139 50 2 33 100 107 36 78 20 0 0 1 In the 1st half of the season, Don Baylor terrorized the league. By the all-star break, Baylor had accumulated 63 runs and 71 RBI. Baylor led the league in extra base hits with 85, as well as HBP with 20. Injuries and a slump slowed Baylor down a bit, but not before his team made the playoffs. 1ST RUNNER UP: Dale Murphy, CF, Boston Bulldogs NAME AVG OBP SPC G AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI BB K HB IW SB CS Murphy,Dal .269 .338 .510 162 647 174 24 9 38 113 118 66 153 4 1 16 12 Dale Murphy was a monster this year. Mid-way through the season Murphy almost singlehandedly brought the Bulldogs to within striking distance of the Destinies in the Tiant division before the team faded. Still, Murphy put up 118 RBI's, which was good enough to lead the league. Murphy was also 2nd in the league in dingers, with 38. CDBL MVP: Eddie Murray, 1B, Dewey Beach Lush NAME AVG OBP SPC G AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI BB K HB IW SB CS Murray .320 .425 .547 162 600 192 31 3 33 117 116 112 88 1 5 7 0 In this case most valuable player is a bit of a misnomer, since the Lush really didn't do anything this year. Still, Murray arguably was head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. Murray's OPS of 0.972 is the best of all players with 400 AB or more. And Murray is the only player in the league to have over 100 runs, RBI's and walks. Murray had the kind of year which probably could have decided differently a few of the pennant chases and playoff spots. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CDBL 1984 CY YOUNG 2ND RUNNER UP: Joaquin Andujar, Westport Knuckleheads NAME ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Andujar 2.84 17 10 0 36 36 10 1 247.1 191 95 78 59 144 988 19 2 24 Andujar was the ace among aces for the Knuckleheads. Lots of the starters on the staff may have put better numbers up per start, but Andujar put in the innings, throwing 247 1/3 over 36 starts with 17 wins. 1ST RUNNER UP: Dave Stieb, Shiner Beercats NAME ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Stieb 2.52 18 13 0 33 33 14 7 253.1 209 79 71 72 174 1014 10 1 20 Hmmmm. A Cy Young contender pitching in the void known as the Astrodome? Well, Dave Stieb had to contend with the league's worst (and probably will be worst ever) offense, and still came up with 18 wins. A 2.52 ERA will help. Stieb also accounted for 30% of Beercat wins, which is a stat unlikely to be beaten anytime soon. CDBL CY YOUNG: Bert Blyleven, DC Riots NAME ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Blyleven 2.66 17 14 0 37 37 13 7 280.1 227 95 83 70 199 1125 24 4 13 Yes, in this day and age of stats over substance, Blyleven is the rare best of both worlds. Blyleven was an innings monster, throwing a league best 280 1/3. And yet he made them count, as he helped the Riots stay in playoff contention until the very end (or at least until Blyleven burned out after 37 starts). His 2.66 ERA was nothing to sneeze at, and he racked up 17 wins. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CDBL 1984 FIREMAN OF THE YEAR 2ND RUNNER UP: Dan Quisenberry, DC Riots NAME ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Quisenbery 2.22 9 6 30 68 0 0 0 85.0 86 24 21 6 27 338 4 0 10 For quite a few Riots victories, Quisenberry was the guy they called on to seal the game in the 9th. Quisenberry posted a 2.22 ERA, with 30 saves in 85 innings pitched. The only question is, would the Riots' fortunes have turned out differently if Quisenberry was used more? 1ST RUNNER UP: Dave Righetti, Topeka Stingers NAME ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Righetti 2.27 6 8 36 76 0 0 0 111.0 100 37 28 31 99 460 5 0 4 Stinger fans didn't have much to look forward to when going to the ballpark, but they were able to watch the superb Dave Righetti in action. Righetti was a save machine, saving a league high 36 games. Righetti is ready for another run in 1985, and with the Stingers expected to greatly improve, he could be the 1985 CDBL fireman of the year. CDBL 1984 FIREMAN OF THE YEAR: Jay Howell, Philadelphia Liberty NAME ERA W L S G GS CG SH IP H R ER BB K BF HR WP DP Howell 1.24 6 4 35 76 0 0 0 94.2 63 16 13 41 106 382 3 4 6 Wow, what a season Howell had. Howell saved 35 games, and posted a tiny 1.24 ERA. Even more impressive is that Howell posted more strikeouts (106) than innings pitched (94 2/3 IP), which is something only a few players in the league can claim.
