2012 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Manhatten Beach Mashers (104-58, AP Conference Wildcard) vs. Arkham Investigators (105-57, Aaron Division Winner) The Mashers were competitive in the Aaron division all season long, and only lost out on the Aaron division title on the final day of the season. Torii Hunter hit .361 with 21 home runs, 101 runs scored and 99 RBI, while Chase Headley hit .279 with 27 home runs and 107 RBI. Andre Ethier contributed a .310 batting average, 22 home runs and 87 runs scored. Chris Nelson hit .303 with 16 home runs and 72 RBI in just 386 at bats. Late season acquisition Carlos Beltran hit .291 with 8 home runs, 16 runs scored and 18 RBI in 117 at bats. Kris Medlin went 16-3 with a 2.37 ERA, and CC Sabathia was 17-8 with a 3.18 ERA. Trevor Cahill went 16-7 with a 3.52 ERA. Closer Fernando Rodney was spectacular, saving 39 games, going 7-0 in relief and had a 0.96 ERA. The Investigators battled the Mashers all season for the Aaron division pennant, and won the division title on the last day of the season. Yadier Molina hit 38 home runs, with a .364 batting average, 104 runs scored and 116 RBI. Ian Desmond hit .292 with 32 home runs, 97 runs scored and 99 RBI. Adam LaRoche hit 30 home runs with 86 runs scored and 90 RBI, and Jason Kubel hit 24 home runs with 65 runs scored and 63 RBI in 386 at bats. Bronson Arroyo went 23-4 with a 3.21 ERA, and Chris Sale went 22-3 with a 2.57 ERA. Bartolo Colon was 14-7 with a 3.34 ERA. Closer Jim Johnson saved 31 games, was 7-2 in relief and had a 1.85 ERA. In 12 regular season games, the two franchises each won 6 games. The Mashers were the first team to score in this series, when in the top of the 3rd, Logan Forsythe got a 1 out walk, moved to third on a base hit from Matt Wieters and scored on a groundout from Torii Hunter. 1-0 Mashers after 3. In the 4th inning, Daniel Descalso hit a single with 1 out, moved to third on a base hit from Chase Headley, and scored on a Kevin Youkilis sacrifice fly. 2-0 Mashers after 4. In the 6th inning, Casper Wells hit a double with 0 outs and scored on a Descalso base hit. 3-0 Manhatten Beach after 6 innings. In the bottom of the 8th, Arkham got on the scoreboard with a solo home run from Carlos Gomez. The game was 3-1 Mashers heading into the bottom of the 9th. Having dropped their first game at home, Arkham was the first team to score in the bottom of the first when Wilin Rosario hit a 2 out double, moved to third on a base hit from Ian Desmond and scored on a base hit from Carlos Gomez. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Investigators went up 2-0 with a solo home run from Yaider Molina. In the top of the 4th, Torii Hunter got a leadoff walk, and moved to third on a double from Anthony Rizzo. Carlos Beltran grounded out, scoring Hunter. Chris Nelson doubled, scoring Rizzo to tie the game up at 2. Matt Wieters doubled, scoring Nelson to give Manhatten Beach the 3-2 lead. Could the top two starters for Arkham who combined for 45 wins in the regular season really start off the playoffs 0-2? In the bottom of the 6th, Ian Desmond hit a leadoff single. Carlos Gomez singled, putting 2 runners on. The next batter, Justin Maxwell, connected on a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall. 3-run tater, and Arkham was now up 5-3. Arroyo was at least assured of not getting the loss. The score remained 5-3 Arkham heading into the bottom of the 9th. Jim Johnson was closing for the Investigators. The first batter faced, pinch hitter Justin Morneau, grounded out to third. As did Chase Headley. With 2 outs, Andre Ethier recorded the third out with a fly out to center. Arkham's 6th inning comeback was the difference-maker as they win game 2 by a score of 5-3 to even up the series.
