2012 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW World Series Georgia Pines (100-62, GT Conference Wildcard, 4-2 over Bulldogs in Round 1, 4-3 over Gold Diggers in GT Conference Finals) vs. Manhatten Beach Mashers (104-58, AP Conference Wildcard, 4-1 over Investigators in Round 1, 4-3 over Bandits in AP Conference Finals) The Georgia Pines tied for the Tiant division title in the regular season, bested division rival Boston in round 1, and then defeated Gehrig division winner Anchorage in 7 games to advance to their first CDBL World Series since moving to Georgia. In the conference finals Adrian Gonzalez hit .385 with 3 home runs, 4 runs scored and 6 RBI, while Tyler Moore hit 4 home runs with 5 RBI in just 10 at bats. AJ Pierzynski hit .333 with 4 RBI and Jon Jay scored 4 runs. The real stars of the series were the starters, who combined to throw 2 shutouts and 4 complete games with a team ERA of 2.47. Jake Peavy was 1-1 with a 1.59 ERA and 2 complete games, and Justin Verlander was 1-0 with a complete game and 1.65 ERA. Cole Hamels went 1-1 with a complet game shutout. Ross Detwiler pitched 7 innings with an ERA of 1.29 in his lone start. The Mashers lost out on the Aaron Division pennant by 1 game, but defeated Aaron Division winner Arkham in 5 games in round 1, then defeated the regular season wins leader Brookeville Bandits in 7 games in a slugfest to advance to their first CDBL World Series since 2007. The Mashers hit .291/.359/ .442 as a team overall in the conference finals. Anthony Rizzo hit .478 with a home run, 6 runs scored and 5 RBI, and Chris Nelson hit .360 with a home run and 8 RBI. Torii Hunter hit .333 with 6 runs scored and 5 RBI. Carlos Beltran hit .308 with a home run, runs scored and 5 RBI. Andre Ethier and Chase Headley also scored 4 runs each. The relievers were the stars for the Mashers in the conference finals. Eric O'Flahery, Fernando Rodney, Sergio Romo, Tony Watson and Jared Burton combined to throw 20 1/3 innings of shutout relief, and combined for 2 wins and 3 saves between them. In 4 regular season games, the Pines won the season series 4 games to 3. Because both teams enter the CDBL World Series as conference wildcard, the tiebreaker for home field advantage first goes to the team with the better regular season, which in this case is the 104 win Mashers over the 100 win Pines. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Pines (Verlander) at Mashers (Medlin). Kris Medlin had a tough AP Conference Finals, and in the first inning of game one of the CDBL World Series it was obvious he still had some jitters. Asdrubal Cabrera got a leadoff walk and moved to 2nd on a base hit from Jon Jay. Adam Jones grounded out, advancing the runners 90 feet. With 1 out, Adrian Gonzalez singled, scoring Cabrera and Jay for a 2-0 Georgia lead. In the bottom of the 6th, the Mashers put themselves on the board with a solo home run from Andre Ethier. In the bottom of the 8th, Justin Verlander was still pitching for the Pines, eyeing another complete game with a 2-1 lead. He got into trouble, loading the bases with 1 1out, but was left in the game to resolve it. Torii Hunter hit a lineout putting 2 outs on the board. And Verlander escaped the inning when Anthony Rizzo grounded out to first. Verlander continued to pitch for Georgia in the bottom of the 9th with a 1-run lead, determined to get that complete game. The first batter up, Carlos Beltran, connected on a solo home run to tie up the game. With 1 out, pinch hitter Tyler Colvin singled, Verlander was done for the day, and Casey Janssen was brought to the mound. Colvin got pinch hitter Mike Baxter to strike out, and Erik Kratz grounded out. With the score tied at 2, the game would go into extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Mashers closer Fernando Rodney was pitching. Pinch hitter Tyler Moore smacked a 0 out double. Caberera struck out for out #1. Jon Jay eeked out an infield single, putting runners at the corners. Adam Jones had a chance for the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly, but lined out to Rodney. 2 outs. Adrian Gonzalez was at bat, and came through for the Pines, grounding a single to score Moore. The Pines were up 3-2. In the bottom of the 10th, Georgia decided to trot out mopup reliever Kyle Kendrick to the mound to protect a 1 run lead. The Mashers seemed surprised by this, as Chase Headley and Andre Etheir both struck out. With 2 outs and the bases empty, Torii Hunter singled to put the tying run the plate. Anthony Rizzo walked to put the winning run at the plate. Charlie Blackmon came to the plate to pinch hit for Carlos Beltran. Blackmon didn't come through, grounded out to end the game. Georgia's reliance on their starting pitchers payed off for game 1 as they win it by a score of 3-2 in extra innings. ******************************************************************* GAME FOUR -- Mashers (Richard) at Pines (Detwiler). If Manhatten Beach won this game, they'd have a significant advantage in clinching the CDBL Championship. If Georgia won this game, the series would be tied. In the top of the first, Adrian Gonzalez put the first Georgia run on the board with a solo home run. In the top of the 2nd, Daniel Descalso walked and moved to third on a Chase Headley doubled. Kevin Youkilis singled, scoring Descalso to tie the game up. Clayton Richard grounded out, moving Youkilis into scoring position. Logan Forsythe smacked a grounder up the middle, scoring Headley. Kevin Youkilis tried to score as well but was thrown out. Still, Mashers up 2-1 after 2 innings. In the bottom of the 3rd, Kelly Johnson singled and moved to third on a double by Asdrubal Cabrera. Alberto Callaspo grounded out, scoring Johnson to tie the game up at 2. In the top of the 5th, with 2 runners on, Franklin Gutierrez doubled, moving the Mashers up 4-2. In the bottom of the 5th, Georgia tied it right back up with back to back solo home runs for AJ Pierzynski and Kelly Johnson. 4-4 tie game. In the top of the 6th, Kevin Youkilis got a leadoff walk, and with 1 out Forsythe brought them both home with a deep home run to left field. 6-4 Mashers after 6. In the bottom of the 7th, up 6-4, Tony Watson was on the mound for the Mashers. AJ Pierzynski hit a leadoff double, and moved to third on a Johnson fly out. Tyler Moore was at bat as a pinch hitter, and doubled in Pierzynski. The next batter, Cabrera, was issued a walk, but the 4th ball was a passed ball, allowing Moore to move to third. Eric O'Flaherty became the new reliever. Callapso hit a grounder to short, which was thrown home to prevent the run. With 2 outs, Adrian Gonzalez singled, scoring Cabrera to tie the game up at 6. Neither team would score in the 9th, so the game would go into extra innings. In the top of the 13th, Oliver Perez was pitching for the Pines, the 5th Pines pitcher of the day. Anthong Rizzo singled and moved to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Everth Cabrera. But Manhatten Beach couldn't convert, as Perez struck out Matt Wieters and Torii Hunter to end the top of the inning with the score still tied at 6. In the bottom of the 13th, Raul Valdes was pitching for Manhatten Beach, the 7th Mashers pitcher of the game. Adam Jones hit an infield single and Jon Jay knocked down a precise bunt to put 2 runners on with 0 outs. Next at bat was BJ Upton. Upton singled to shallow center, just out of reach of Chris Nelson's glove to score Jones for the game winner. Georgia wins game 4 by a score of 7-6 in extra innings to tie up the series. (Medlin) at Pines (Verlander). The series was tied at 2, so the championship would be decided in the next 3 games. In the bottom of the 2nd, AJ Pierzynski scored the first run of the game with a solo home run. 1-0 Pines after 2. Justin Verlander was trucking along pitching a shutout heading into the top of the 6th. But Verlander would struggle, loading the bases with 1 out. Up to the plate came Carlon Beltran. Beltran had famously been pinch hit for in game one, but was left in this time. That payed off - Beltran connected on the 2nd pitch seen to send the ball over the right field wall. Grand slam home run, and Manhatten Beach was up 4-1. 2 more Masher runs would score in the 6th, knocking Verlander out of the game and Manhatten Beach had a comfortable 6-1 lead. The score remained 6-1 Mashers heading into the bottom of the 9th. Jeff Karstens was pitching for Manhatten Beach. Adrian Gonzalez singled, but was forced out after Lonnie Chisenhall hit a grounder to short. With a runner at first, Pierzynski hit an infield single. Karstens was pulled, and closer Fernando Rodney was now on the mound to face pinch hitter Jim Thome. Thome, facing his old team smacked a single to load the bases. Up came pinch hitter Alberto Callaspo. Callaspo, who won a CDBL Championship with the Minutemen last year, failed to convert, lining out to put 2 outs on the board. With 2 outs, a 5 run lead and Rodney on the mound, Asdrubal Cabrera came to the plate. Cabrera was plunked by a pitch, forcing in a run. 6-2 Mashers with 1 out left. The next batter, Jon Jay, smacked a double down the third base line, scoring 2 more runs and put Cabrera at third. 6-4 Mashers. Still 1 out left. Next was Tyler Moore. Moore was clutch, cracking a base hit to score Cabrera and Jay. Georgia had tied up the game with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. The game would go into extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Joe Smith was relieving for the Pines. Jim Thome was moved to 2nd (!) to replace Kelly Johnson who he had pinch hit for. Torii Hunter singled. Anthony Rizzo hit into a double play, started by .. Jim Thome. Who knew a slow DH type could do middle infield work? With 2 outs and the score tied at 6 saw pinch hitter Justin Morneau come to the plate. Morneau made the difference, hitting a solo home run to put Manhatten Beach up 7-6. In the bottom of the 10th, the Mashers were 3 outs away from winning game 5. Fernando Rodney was still pitching despite his 9th inning performance. Rodney gave up a walk to Adrian Gonzalez and was replaced by Jared Burton. Chisenhall doubled, putting Gonzalez at third. Pierzynski was walked to load the bases. Still 0 outs. At the plate, Jim Thome was walked, forcing in a run to tie the game. Now at bat was pinch hitter Jose Constanza for a critical at bat. Constanza didn't have to swing the bat, as Burton threw an errant pitch, hitting Constanza to force in the game winner. Verlander was torched, but so was Fernando Rodney as Georgia wins game 5 by a score of 8-7 in extra innings. The Pines are 1 win away from clinching their first ever CDBL Championship. ******************************************************************* GAME SIX -- Pines (Peavy) at Mashers (Sabathia). Georgia was 1 win away from claiming their first ever CDBL title, and they had Jake Peavy on the mound, but they would have to do it on the road against CC Sabathia. In the top of the third, Jeff Mathis smacked a 1 out solo home run off of Sabathia for a 1-0 Pines lead. In the bottom of the 5th, Anthony Rizzo singled off of Peavy, moved to second on a base hit from Chris Nelson, and scored on a double from Matt Wieters to tie the game up. Everth Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Nelson to put the Mashers up 2-1. The score remained 2-1 Manhatten Beach heading into the top of the 9th. Tony Watson was pitching for the Mashers. Asdrubal Cabrera hit a leadoff single. Alberto Callapso walked, putting 2 runners on. Adrian Gonzalez hit a fly out, but not far enough to advance a runner. Adam Jones hit a fly out, moving the tying run to third base. With 2 outs, Jon Jay was at bat. A single would tie up the game, but it was not to be. Jay struck out to end the game.
