2012 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Albuquerque Maul (94-68, #2 League Wildcard, 2-0 over Caution in Round 0) vs. Anchorage Gold Diggers (106-56, Gehrig Division Winner) The Maul were leading the Gehrig division until the all-star break, then a mid-season swoon saw them drop out of playoff contention before a furious rally at the end of the season propelled them to the #2 league wildcard. They bested the Caution in 2 games in their round 0 matchup to advance to round 1. Josh Hamilton was the hero of game 2, going 2 for 5 with a home run and 2 RBI. Alex Rios hit .556 with a 1 run and 2 RBI, and Mark Trumbo had a double and solo home run. Jered Weaver pitched 8 innings, giving up 1 run with a win, and Rafael Soriano pitched 2 innings of shutout relief across both games, notching a save. The Gold Diggers leapt into the Gehrig division lead at the all-star break and never looked back, winning the division by 12 games. Carlos Ruiz hit .322 with 22 home runs, 84 runs scored and 84 RBI, and Ben Zobrist hit .307 with 27 hoem runs, 141 runs scored and 100 RBI. Alex Gordon hit .298 with 108 runs scored, and Billy Butler hit .298 with 23 home runs, 92 runs scored and 111 RBI. Yoenis Cespedes smacked 31 home runs with 101 runs scored and 132 RBI. Brett Lawrie contributed 21 stolen bases and 86 RBI. Hiroki Kuroda went 19-4 with a 2.49 ERA, and Mark Buehrle won 20 games with a 2.88 ERA. Lucas Harrell won 16 games with a 3.51 ERA. Closer Darren O'Day saved 36 games with a 3.11 ERA. In 12 regular season matchups, Anchorage handily won the series 8 games to 4. The Gold Diggers have home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Maul (Weaver) at Gold Diggers (Kuroda). In the top of the first, the Maul lept to a quick lead when Dexter Fowler singled, moved to third on a double from Alex Rios and scored on a pop out from Josh Hamilton. In the bottom of the inning, Carlos Ruiz hit a 1 out single, moved to 2nd on a 2 out walk from Yoenis Cespedes and scored on a base hit by Billy Butler to tie the game up. 1-1 game after 1 inning. In the top of the 4th, Josh Hamilton smacked a leadoff triple. Mark Trumbo drove him in with a sacrifice fly to give Albuquerque the 2-1 lead. In teh bottom of the inning, Anchorage tied it up with a solo home run from Cespedes. Billy Butler doubled and moved to third on a single from Matt Dominguez. Cameron Maybin smacked a 0 out triple, moving the Gold Diggers ahead 4-2. With 1 out, Hiroki Kuroda hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Maybin for a 5-2 Anchorage lead after 4 innings. Albquerque cut the lead to 2 in the 8th on a solo home run from Freddie Freeman. The score would be 5-3 Gold Diggers heading into the top of the 9th. Darren O'Day was pitching for Anchorage. In the 7th, Alex Rios reached first on a fielding error by Ben Zobrist. Tyler Clippard tried to pick him off, but threw the ball away, sending Rios to 2nd. With 2 outs, Jose Altuve singled, scoring Rios for a 4-0 Maul lead after 7 innings. In the bottom of the 8th, Alex Gordon hit a 1 out double, and scored on a base hit from Zobrist. The score remained 4-1 Albuquerque in the bottom of the 9th. Closer Rafael Soriano was on the mound. First batter up, Billy Butler, struck out. Pinch hitter Rob Brantley grounded out. Pinch hitter Travis Ishikawa got a 2 out walk. Pinch hitter Wil Nieves singled, bringing the tying run Craig Gentry to the plate. Gentry singled, scoring Ishikawa. 4-2 Maul, and now the winning run was at the plate in Alex Gordon. But the rally would stop there, as Gordon struck out to end the game. In the top of the 1st, Alex Gordon hit a leadoff single, and Carlos Ruiz brought them both home with a 2-run dinger. 2-0 Gold Diggers after 1. Albuquerque cut the lead to 1 in the 3rd with an Alex Rios solo home run. In the 4th, Jose Reyes hit a 1 out double, moved to third on a single from Eric Young and scored on a base hit from Jered Weaver. 2-2 tie ballgame after 4. Anchorage broke the deadlock in the 7th inning with a solo home run from Billy Butler. They made it 4-2 when Brett Lawrie connected on a solo home run with 1 out. Albuqerque cut the lead to 1 in the bottom of the 7th when pinch hitter Peter Kozma hit a leaodff double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Jason Castro sacrifice fly. The Gold Diggers gave themselves some breathing room in the 8th when Alex Gordon connected on a solo home run. Anchorage made it 6-3 in the 9th when Yuniel Escobar singled with 2 outs and Butler on 3rd, scoring Butler. With a 3 run lead, closer Darren O'Day retired Jose Reyes, Eric Young and Pete Orr in order to end the game. The Gold Diggers win game 5 by a score of 6-3 to take the series in 5 games. They advance to the Aaron/Paige conference finals.
