CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW AARON/PAIGE CONFERENCE FINALS Manhatten Beach Mashers (97-65, AP Conference Wildcard, 4-1 over Investigators in Round 1) vs. DBL Fishbiscuits (102-60, Paige Division Winner) Manhatten Beach rode several long win streaks to the AP Conference Wildcard, then defeated the Aaron Division winning Investigators in 5 games in their round 1 matchup. Mike Morse hit .476 with a home run, 4 runs scored and 4 RBI, while Dan Uggla slugged .476 with a home run and 4 RBI. Shelley Duncan slugged .524 with 2 home runs, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI. CC Sabathia went 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in 1 starts, and Ian Kennedy was 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in his lone start. Alfredo Aceves saved a game with a 0.00 ERA in 6 innings of relief, and Ryan Madson went 1-1 with a save in 4 appearances. The Fishbiscuits had a banner year, winning 102 games and the Paige division pennant, earning a 1st round bye along the way. During the regular season Prince Fielder hit .307 with 46 home runs, 112 runs scored and 121 RBI, while Jose Bautista hit .302 with 39 home runs, 136 runs scored and 88 RBI. Robinson Cano hit .313 with 35 home runs, 129 runs scored and 96 RBI, while Matt Holliday hit 26 home runs with 93 runs scored and 91 RBI. Kevin Youkilis added 22 home runs and 79 RBI. Matt Cain had a wildly successful year, going 25-3 with a 2.52 ERA. Chris Carpenter went 19-8 with a 3.95 ERA and Gio Gonzalez went 16-5 with a 4.42 ERA. Heath Bell saved 19 games with a 8-1 record in relief with a 1.83 ERA, and mid-season acquisition Mariano Rivera saved 20 games with the team with a 1.41 ERA. The Fishbiscuits have home filed advantage for this series as the Mashers faced their 2nd consecutive 102 win regular season team in the playoffs. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Mashers (Sabathia) at Fishbiscuits (Cain). Having an extended period of rest didn't seem to adversely affect the Fishbiscuits, as in the bottom of the first, Jose Bautista walked, moved to third on a base hit by Chris Snyder and scored on a sacrifice fly by Prince Fielder. In the top of the 2nd, Manhatten Beach tied it up when Michael Young doubled and scored on a double by Chris Young. 1-1 tie game after 2. In the 4th, DBL jumped out to the lead with a 2-run homer from Robinson Cano. In the 5th, Chris Snyder hit a 2-run home run, and Kevin Youkilis hit a 2-on, 2 out RBI single to put DBL up 6-1. The Mashers cut into DBL's lead in the 6th with a 2-run homer from Dan Uggla. But DBL would continue to score at will, scoring 2 more runs in the bottom of the inning on a Bautista 2-run homer, and a solo home run by Robinson Cano in the 7th. The Fishbiscuits smack 4 home runs in game 1 to win it by a score of 9-3. The Mashers made it 2-0 in the 3rd when Brian McCann singled, moved to 2nd on a Ethier ground out and scored on a base hit by Morse. DBL cut the lead to 1 in the 4th when Prince Fielder hit a 2 out single, moved to 2nd when Matt Holliday was hit by a pitch and scored on a base hit by Nick Hundley. 2-1 Mashers after 4. The Mashers had another scoring opportunity in the top of the 8th, loading the bases with 0 outs. Michael Young hit into a double play, notching 2 outs on the board by let another run score. Manhatten Beach put it away for good in the top of the 9th, scoring 3 more runs capped by a 2-RBI double from Morse. In the top of the first, Jose Bautista got things off to a quick start with a leadoff solo home run. In the bottom of the 3rd, Jason Barlett singled, stole second, moved to third on a ground out from Shelley Duncan and scored on a double from Mike Morse. 1-1 tie ball game after 3. CC Sabathia had some trouble in the 4th inning, loading the bases with 1 out. Kevin Youkilis singled, scoring 2 runners. Brett Gardner grounded out, which allowed another run to score. 3-run inning, and DBL was up 4-1. In the 7th with 2 on and 2 out, Salvador Perez singled, extending DBL's lead to 5-1. In the bottom of the 7th, Matt Cain gave up a single to Barlett and a walk to Chris Heisey. Shelley Duncan followedup with a 3-run blast, chasing Cain from the game. With 1 out Morse hit a solo home run, tying the game up at 5. The game was still tied at 5 heading into the 9th. Ryan Madson was pitching for the Mashers. Jack Wilson and Jose Bautista singled to put runners at the corners. Salvador Perez hit an infield ball, which was thrown home .. but not in time as Jack Wilson was able to score first. 6-5 Fishbiscuits with 0 outs. Prince Fielder hit into a double play, sending Bautista to 3rd. With 2 outs, Carlos Lee singled, scoring Bautista for a 7-5 DBL game. Mariano Rivera was pitching for the Fishbiscuits in the bottom of the 9th with a 2 run lead. First batter up, Duncan, flied out. Andre Ethier struck out. And Mike Morse hit a fly out to end the game. DBL wins game 5 by a score of 7-5 to move to a win away from advancing to the 2011 CDBL World Series. In the bottom of the 2nd, DBL sored first with a solo home run from Kevin Youkilis. They added a 2nd run in the bottom of the 4th with a 2-on, 2 out RBI single from Alex Gonzalez. 2-0 DBL after 4. In the top of the 6th inning, Masher hitter Mike Morse singled, moved to 2nd on a Dan Uggla walk, moved to third on a fly out from Michael Young and scored on a single from Chris Heisey. The Mashers tied it up in the 7th when pinch hitter Justin Morneau walked, moved to second on a Brian McCann singled and scored on a Morse RBI double. 2-2 tie game after 7. In the top of the 8th, the Mashers moved ahead on a pinch hit solo home run from Tyler Colvin. In the bottom of the inning, with 2 outs, Jose Bautista nabbed a walk. Ryan Madson came on in relief. Prince Fielder greeted him with a double, scoring Bautista to tie the game at 3. The next batter, Matt Holliday, went yard. 2-run shot, and DBL was up 5-3. Mariano Rivera was pitching in the top of the 9th with a 2 run lead and was 3 outs away from sending his team to the CDBL World Series. First batter up, Shelley Duncan, struck out. Brian McCann singled. A passed ball put McCann in scoring position. Rivera got Mike Morse to ground out for out #2. The Mashers' season now rested on the shoulders of Dan Uggla. Would Uggla perform some playoff heroics? Not this year. Uggle grounded out to 2nd base to end the game and Manhatten Beach's season. DBL wins game 6 by a score of 5-3 to advance to the CDBL World Series.
