CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW ROUND 1 Manhatten Beach Mashers (97-65, AP Conference Wildcard) vs. Arkham Investigators (102-60, Aaron Division Winner) The Mashers rode an epic late season winning streak into grabbing the AP Conference Wildcard. Michael Morse had a monster year, hitting .274 with 46 home runs, 109 runs scored and 114 RBI. Dan Uggla hit 34 home runs with 89 runs scored and 101 RBI. Chris Young had 24 home runs and 91 runs scored, and Michael Young hit .275 with 85 runs scored. CC Sabathia went 22-7 with a 3.03 ERA, and Brandon Beachy went 14-6 with a 2.74 ERA. Ian Kennedy won 15 games with a 3.90 ERA. Closer Ryan Madson went 10-4 in relief with 30 saves and a 2.11 ERA, and Alfredo Aceves went 9-4 in relief with 10 saves and a 2.53 ERA. Arkham was at the top of the Aaron Division for the entire regular season, and held off the late surging Mashers to capture the division title. Adrian Gonzalez hit .311 with 27 home runs, 97 runs scored and 82, while Carlos Gonzalez hit 31 home runs with 85 runs scored and 82 RBI. Eric Thames added 21 home runs and 77 RBI in 371 at bats, and Howie Kendrick hit .281 with 17 home runs and 68 RBI. Arkham's 3.33 team ERA was best in the conference. Brandon McCarthy went 15-9 with a 2.82 ERA, and Dan Haren went 19-8 with a 3.30 ERA. Jhoulys Chachin went 13-8 with a 3.08 ERA. Closer Joaquin Benoit saved 31 games with a 1.98 ERA, and Chris Sale won 8 games in relief with 14 saves and a 2.58 ERA. In 12 regular season games, the Investigators won the season series 7 games to 5. Arkham has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Mashers (Sabathia) at Investigators (Haren). In the top of the first, Mashers leadoff hitter Shelley Duncan started things off with a solo home run. With 1 out, Michael Morse reached first on a throwing error by Howie Kendrick. After Dan Uggla walked, Michael Young drove in the 2nd run of the inning with a base hit. 2-0 Mashers after 1. In the bottom of the 6th, score still 2-0 Mashers, Adrian Gonzalez hit a 2 out single. Howie Kendrick atoned for his 1st inning error, going deep for a 2-run blast, and the score was tied at 2. Neither team would score in the 7th-9th innings, so the game went into extra innings. In the top of the 11th, Duncan hit a leadoff single. Andre Ethier doubled, moving Duncan to third. With 2 outs and 2 on, Michael Young smacked a clutch base hit, scoring Duncan to give the Mashers a 3-2 lead. Ryan Madson pitched the bottom of the 11th with a 1 run lead and going into his 2nd inning of relief. First batter up, Adrian Gonzalez, grounded out. Howie Kendrick grounded out for out #2. In the bottom of the 8th, Alfredo Aceves was pitching for the Mashers with a 1 run lead. Yadiel Molina struck out for out #1. Kyle Seager hit a single, and Ryan Madson came on in relief. Pinch hitter Nolan Reimold struck out for out #2. Pinch hitter Chipper Jones singled, moving Seager to 2nd. With 2 outs and 2 on, Adrian Gonzalez had his big moment, taking the 2nd pitch over the right field wall. 3-run home run, and Arkham was up 3-1. In the top of the 9th, Joaquin Benoit was pitching for the Investigators, who now owned a 2-run lead. Dan Uggle flied out for out #1. Michael Young singled, putting the tying run at the plate. With 2 outs, Dan Uggla doubled, scoring Morse to put the Mashers up 1-0. In the top of the 4th, Carlos Gonzalez hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a ground out from Howie Kendrick and scored on a base hit from Yadier Molina to tie the game up at 1. In the 5th, Arkham moved ahead on a solo home run by Adrian Gonzalez. Arkham made it 3-1 in the 6th when Carlos Gonzalez doubled, stole third and scored when the ball was thrown past the third baseman on the steal attempt. In the bottom of the 7th, pinch hitter Justin Morneau singled. Shelley Duncan clubbed a 2-run home run to tie the game up at 3. After Ethier singled, Anthony Swarzak was done for the day, and Rich Thompson came on in relief. Mike Morse doubled, putting runners at 2nd & 3rd. Dan Uggla grounded to short, where the ball was thrown home to save a run. After Michael Young struck out, Chris Young broke the game open, smashing a 3-run home run to put Manhatten Beach up 6-3. A Morse RBI double in the 8th made it a 4-run Manhatten Beach lead, and the Investigators would not recover. Sabathia would pitch 8 innings, giving up the 1 earned run, and Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless 9th for the save. Manhatten Beach wins game 5 by a score of 4-1 to win the series in 5 games and advance to the AP Conference Finals.
