2005 CDBL Playoff Preview Aaron/Paige Conference Finals Manhatten Beach Mashers (96-66, #1 League Wildcard, Won Round 0 match vs. Fishbiscuits, 4-1 over Muckrakers in Round 1) vs. Point Lomas Friars (98-64, Aaron Division Winner, 4-1 over Thunder in Round 1) The Mashers battled the Friars for the Aaron division pennant all season before losing the final game of the season against the Friars, knocking them to the #1 League Wildcard. That put them on the hard path, but they responded by beating the DBL Fishbiscuits in their Round 0 matchup and besting the #1 seeded Muckrakers in round 0 to set up a in- playoff rematch. The Friars used their higher seeding to best AP Conference Wildcard Tualatin in 5 games in Round 1. David Ortiz hit .368 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI while Marcus Giles hit .300 with 5 runs scored. Manhatten Beach had a 1-2 punch in the bullpen in Aaron Fultz and Chad Cordero, who combined to win all 4 games with 2 saves and 10 shutout innings of relief. ******************************************************************* GAME THREE -- Friars (Weaver) at Mashers (Smoltz). For the last 2 games the Friars' hitting has been anemic, scoring 2 runs a game. They did that in just the 1st inning with a 2-run home run from Jason Giambi. In the bottom of the 2nd, Manhatten Beach shortstop Rafael Furcal walked and scored on a triple from Brad Hawpe. 2-1 Friars after 2. In the 3rd inning, John Smoltz loaded the bases with 1 out. After striking out Troy Glaus, Jason Varitek smacked a single. Jason Giambi scored from 3rd, and Mark Sweeney scored from 2nd, and in the chaos Varitek tried to stretch it into a double and was tagged out. 4-1 Friars. Point Lomas would add insurance runs in the 4th & 7th for a 6-1 lead. Jeff Weaver was pitching the 8th, having given up only 1 run. But now having thrown 100+ pitches, Weaver got into trouble, walking JD Drew, Morgan Ensberg and David Ortiz to load the bases with 1 out. Justin Speier came on in relief. Marcus Giles doubled, scoring 2 runners. 6-3 Friars. Furcal walked to reload the bases. Pinch hitter Frank Catalanotto came through in a big way, knocking a bases clearing double to tie the game up at 6. Suddenly the Mashers were a run away from going up 3-0 in the series. Neither side would score in the 9th inning. Neither side would score in the 10th. The game went into the 11th inning with a 6-6 tie score. Mashers closer Chad Cordero was working on his 3rd inning of relief. Jason Giambi flied out for out #1. Cliff Floyd lined out for out #2. Gary Sheffield was going to make a groundout for out #3, but Marcus Giles mis-threw the ball to first, allowing Sheffield to wind up at 2nd on the error. It was costly, as Troy Glaus smacked a base hit to score Sheffield. 7-6 Point Lomas heading into the bottom of the 11th inning. Aaron Heilman was pitching the bottom of the 11th, having pitched 2 scoreless outs in the 10th. First batter up, pinch hitter Ryan Ludwick, singled. Luis Matos bunt singled, putting 2 runners on with 0 outs. Pinch hitter Todd Pratt came to bat with 0 outs, his team down by 1. A double would win it. But Pratt struck out instead. 1 out. Damian Miller was up at the plate, and hit into a game ending double play. Point Lomas hangs on to win game 3 by a score of 7-6, their first official win of the series. With the tail end of the rotation facing each other, including Friars hurler Gustavo Chacin for the first time this post-season, the Friars were the first team to score when in the 2nd inning Hector Luna doubled and scored on a single from Kenny Lofton. In the 5th inning, Chacin was still pitching a shutout. After David Ortiz grounded out, Luis Matos was issued a walk. Todd Pratt struck out for out #2. CC Sabathia singled, moving Matos to 3rd. Marcus Giles followed up with with an RBI double, tying the game up at 1. Matt Murton singled, scoring 2 more runners. 3-1 Mashers, with all 3 runs happening with 2 outs on the board. In the top of the 9th, Manhatten Beach was still leading 3-1. Aaron Fultz was pitching for the Mashers. Luna hit a leadoff single. Kenny Lofton popped out for out #1. Jason Giambi doubled, moving Luna to 3rd to bring the go-ahead run at the plate. Pinch hitter Matt Stairs hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Luna and cutting the Mashers lead to 1. Luis Castillo was walked intentionally to face pinch hitter Mike Redmond. Redmond got the walk, loading the bases with 2 outs to bring Gary Sheffield to the plate. A hit could put the Friars ahead, but Sheffield flied out to end the game. The Friars' offensive woes continue, scoring a mere 2 runs again for the 3rd loss of the series as the Mashers win game 4 by a score of 3-2 to put them 1 win away from the CDBL world series. (Pettitte) at Mashers (Sosa). Down 1-3 in the series, the Friars magic number seems to be 2 - that is, if they score more than 2 runs they win. If they score just 2 runs then they have lost. In the top of the 1st inning, Jason Giambi got his team halfway to that 2 run mark with a solo home run. In the 3rd, Kenny Lofton singled, stole second and scored on a base hit from David Eckstein. 2-0 Point Lomas. In the 5th inning, Kenny Lofton walked, stole second, advanced to 3rd on a bad pickoff attempt and scored on a base hit from Giambi. 3-0 Point Lomas. Andy Pettitte was trucking along heading into the 8th inning throwing a shutout. With 1 out, Marcus Giles doubled. With 2 outs, Morgan Ensberg hit a home run. 2-run shot, and the Friars' lead was cut to 1. 3-2 Point Lomas. 2 run rule in effect. In the top of the 9th inning, Troy Glaus got a leadoff walk, moved to 2nd on a base hit from Jason Varitek, moved to third when pinch hitter Jason Lane hit into a double play, and scored on an RBI double from pinch hitter Matt Stairs. 4-2 Friars heading into the bottom of the 9th. Friars closer Scott Eyre was pitching in the bottom of the 9th, his team up by 2. After getting David Ortiz to fly out, converted super-reliever Aaron Heilman was brought on board. Luis Matos grounded out to short for out #2. Heilman gave up a pair of singles, first to pinch hitter Sean Burroughs, then to Brian McCann. Marcus Giles sent them both home with a 2-out, 2-RBI double, tying up the game at 4 and blowing Heilman's save chance. The game would go into extra innings. In the top fo the 10th with 1 out, Giambi walked. Cliff Floyd smacked a single, and Giambi tried to stretch it to third, but was thrown out. Gary Sheffield struck out to end the inning with no score. Heilman continued to pitch in the bottom of the 10th. Morgan Ensberg hit a leadoff singel. Pinch hitter JT Snow sacrifice bunted, advancing Ensberg 90 feet. Pinch hitter Brad Hawpe flied out, advancing Ensberg to 3rd base. With 2 outs, David Ortiz was walked intentionally to bring pinch hitter Frank Catalanotto to the plate. Heilman was having a very shaky day, and unfortuantely for the Friars it cost them. Catalanotto singled, scoring Ensberg to win the game and the series for the Mashers. Point Lomas did score more than 2 runs this game, but a poor performance from normally solid Aaron Heilman did them in as Manhatten Beach wins game 5 by a score of 5-4 in 10 innings, and advance to the CDBL World Series.
