Early on, Brian Giles had Jon Garland's number. In the bottom of the 1st, Giles walked, and when Carlos Delgado hit a deep base hit to Rondell White, Giles tried to stretch it to 3rd. White threw to third, but the ball sailed over Aaron Boone's head. Error to the outfielder, and Hong Kong was up 1-0. In the 3rd, Giles connected on a solo home run to make it 2-0 Cavaliers. In the 4th, Johnny Estrada hit a solo home run of his own, making it 3-0 Hong Kong. The Dragons would first score in the 8th inning with a solo home run by Alex Rodriguez, ending Dontrelle Willis' otherwise stellar day. Cavaliers closer Joe Nathan completed the inning without any other drama. The game remained 3-1 heading into the top of the 9th. Nathan continued to pitch for Hong Kong. Mike Sweeney flied out for out #1. Aaron Boone hit a single. Pinch hitter Jason Tyner singled, moving Boone to third. Damian Jackson singled, scoring a runner to cut the lead to a single run. After Tomas Perez struck out, Johnny Damon walked, loading the bases with 2 outs and the Dragons down by 1. Up to the plate came Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez had a chance to do some real damage, but Nathan won out this day, getting A-Rod to pop out to third to end the game. Hong Kong hangs on to win game 3 by a score of 3-2. Early on it was a comedy of errors -- literally. Jim Edmonds hit a 1 out grounder to Casey Blake, who couldn't make the play. Error to the third baseman, and Edmonds was safe at first. With 2 outs, Bernie Castro hit a grounder to Julio Lugo, who bobbled it. Error to the shortstop, and 2 runners were on base. Fortunately for Matt Clement, Mike Sweeney struck out to end the inning with no score. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Lugo hit a leadoff single. Lugo stole second, and as Gary Bennett tried to throw him out the ball sailed into the outfield, letting Lugo wind up at 3rd. Craig Biggio grounded out, scoring Lugo for a 1-0 Cavaliers lead. The game remained 1-0 Hong Kong heading into the top of the 8th. Matt Clement was starting his 8th inning of shutout pitching. After Jim Edmonds was issued a 1 out walk, Clement was pulled in favor of Doug Brocail. Brocail gave up a single to Alex Rodriguez, and was pulled in favor of Steve Schmoll. Schmoll gave up a base hit to Castro, and Edmonds motored home for the score, but the ball wound up there first. Edmonds was out at home, no score. Sweeney hit a grounder to second base, where it was bobbled for Hong Kong's 3rd error of the game. Bases loaded, 2 outs, and on came Brian Shouse in relief. Shouse shut it down, getting Tomas Perez to ground out to Lugo to end the inning with no score. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Hong Kong added a few insurance runs with solo home runs by Aaron Guiel and Carlos Delgado. 3-0 Hong Kong heading into the top of the 9th. Chris Ray was pitching for the Cavaliers with a 3 run lead. Bennett lined out to first for out #1. Pinch hitter Chris Widger singled to put a man on base. The next batter, Aaron Boone, smashed a 2-run home run. Hong Kong's lead was cut to 1. Ray settled down after that, getting Johnny Damon to ground out and Jim Edmonds to pop out to end the game. With Joe Nathan and Bob Howry resting their arms the bullpen B-team managed to hang on as the Cavaliers win game 4 by a score of 3-2. Hong Kong is 1 win away from advancing to the CDBL World Series. ******************************************************************* GAME FIVE -- Dragons (Clemens) at Cavaliers (Martinez). In a rematch of all time greats, each had something to fight for. For Pedro Martinez and the Cavaliers, a win today would put them in the CDBL World Series for the first time in franchise history. For Roger Clemens and the Dragons, a win would send them back home for the remainder of the series. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Julio Lugo led things off with a triple. Craig Biggio singled, scoring Lugo for a 1-0 Cavaliers lead. Clemens would struggle this inning, loading the bases with 1 out to bring Pedro Martinez to the plate. Martinez grounded out, which allowed another runner to score. 2-0 Cavaliers after 2 innings. In the bottom of the 5th, Brian Giles singled and stole 2nd. Carlos Delgado smacked a grounder to Corey Koskie, who booted it. Delgado was safe at 1st, and Giles advanced to 3rd. With 1 out, Julio Lugo grounded to 2nd, scoring Giles for a 3-0 Hong Kong lead. Giles proved the adept tablesetter once again in the 7th, singling, stealing 2nd, and scoring on a Delgado double. 4-0 Hong Kong after 7. Roger Clemens pitched 6 innings, giving up 3 runs (2 earned). Pedro Martinez would pitch 7 shutout innings. In the top of the 8th, Bob Howry was pitching for the Cavaliers, just 6 outs away from the CDBL World Series. After getting Johnny Damon to fly out and Jim Edmonds to ground out, Alex Rodriguez hit a solo home run for Avila's first run of the game. Closer Joe Nathan came on in relief and retired Corey Koskie to end the 8th. The score would remain 4-1 Cavaliers heading into the top of the 9th. Joe Nathan remained on the mound, 3 outs away from pushing the Cavaliers farther than they've ever gotten. First batter up, Rondell White, struck out. 2 outs away. Gary Bennett hit a single. As did pinch hitter Damian Jackson. Now the tying run was at the plate in Mike Sweeney. Sweeney popped out for out #2. Now it was all up to pinch hitter Aaron Boone. One swing could change the direction of the series for the Dragons, but Joe Nathan was just too much. Boone struck out on a 1-2 pitch to end the game, the series, and the Dragons' season. Hong Kong wins game 5 by a score of 4-1 to advance to the CDBL World Series for the first time in franchise history.
