2004 CDBL Playoff Preview Aaron/Paige Conference Finals Springfield Isotopes (109-53, Paige Division Winner) vs. Dallas SuperSquad (94-68, Aaron Division Winner, 4-3 over Thunder in Round 1 The Isotopes dominated the CDBL, winning a league best 109 games, the Paige division title and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Barry Bonds had another excellent season, hitting .338 with 53 home runs, 157 runs scored, 154 RBI, and 172 walks. Ivan Rodriguez hit .351 with 26 home runs, 95 runs scored and 147 RBI, and Mark Kotsay scored 154 runs while hitting .341. Gary Sheffield smashed 34 home runs with 145 runs scored and 132 RBI. Miguel Tejada hit .302 with 34 home runs, 105 runs scored and 138 RBI. Travis Hafner hit .321 with 31 home runs, 140 runs scored and 98 RBI. Curt Schilling had an ace year, going 23-8 with a 3.28 ERA. Ryan Drese went 16-11 with a 4.07 ERA, and John Thomson went 18-7 with a 4.49 ERA. BJ Ryan saved 17 games with a 2.55 ERA, and LaTroy Hawkins saved another 14. The Dallas SuperSquad won the Aaron division title their first year in Dallas, and battled and bested the Tualatin Thunder in 7 games in their round 1 series to advance to the conference finals. Scott Rolen hit well, with a .333 batting average, 4 home runs, 5 runs scored and 5 RBI in 7 games. Michael Barrett hit .318 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBI, while Luis Gonzalez hit 2 home runs with 5 RBI. Moises Alou and Derek Jeter also added 5 RBI apiece. Paul Byrd was an effective starter, going 1-0 with a 1.20 ERA in 2 starts. Bronson Arroyo was 2-0 in 2 starts with a 3.14 ERA. In his lone start Adam Eaton gave up 1 earned run in 5 2/3 innings. Reliever David Weathers pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings across 2 games in relief. In 9 regular season games, Springfield won the season series 7 games to 2. The Isotopes have home field advantage due to their higher seeding. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- SuperSquad (Rusch) at Isotopes (Schilling). Facing the mighty Isotopes, the SuperSquad made a statement early when Moises Alou hit a 2-out solo home run in the top of the 1st inning for the early lead. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Ivan Rodriguez hit a solo home run to tie up the game. The next batter, Miguel Tejada, singled. With 1 out, Travis Hafner singled, moving Tejada to 3rd. With 2 outs, Curt Schilling gave the Isotopes the lead with a base hit RBI. 2-1 Springfield after 2. The score remained 2-1 heading into the bottom of the 7th. With 1 out, Barry Bonds singled, and Glendon Rusch's day was done, having thrown 106 pitches and held the Isotopes to 2 runs. David Riske came on in relief for Dallas. Gary Sheffield hit a fly ball to Moises Alou, who fumbled it. Bonds to third, Sheffield safe on the error. Ivan Rodriguez followed up with a double, scoring 2 runners. Jolbert Cabrera singled, scoring Rodriguez. 5-1 Isotopes after 7. In the 8th inning, Mark Kotsay put the game out of reach with a 2-run home run. Springfield wins game 1 of the AP Conference Finals by a score of 7-2. In the 2nd game of this series, the SuperSquad once again took an early lead, this time with a solo home run from Adam Dunn in the 2nd inning. In the bottom of the 3rd, with 2 on and 2 out, Miguel Tejada doubled, scoring 2 runners to put Springfield ahead 2-1 after 3 innings. In the 5th inning, Mark Kotsay doubled and Barry Bonds was hit by a pitch to put 2 on with 0 outs. Gary Sheffield singled, scoring Kotsay. Ivan Rodriguez singled, scoring Bonds & Sheffield. After Miguel Tejada singled, Wilson Alvarez was pulled in favor of Bronson Arroyo. Scott Hatteberg hit into a double play, but another run scored. 6-1 Springfield after 5 innings. The Isotopes put the cherry on top in the 8th inning on a Gary Sheffield grand slam. With the score 10-1 in the top of the 9th, the Isotopes engaged in some batting practice for the SuperSquad, who did score 4 runs in the 9th but the game outcome was never in doubt. Springfield wins game 2 by a score of 10-5, sending the series to Dallas. In the top of the 7th inning, Bonds hit a leadoff double. Miguel Tejada hit a 1 out single to move Bonds to 3rd, and Adam Kennedy hit a sacrifice fly to put Springfield up 5-3. Miguel Tejada singled in another run in the top of the 9th to give the Isotopes a 3-run buffer heading into the bottom of the 9th. BJ Ryan was pitching for the Isotopes, 3 outs away from the win. The Isotopes were the first team to score, when in the 4th, Barry Bonds walked, moved to 2nd on a Ivan Rodriguez single and scored on a double from Adam Kennedy. Dallas tied it up in the 6th when Danny Bautista drove in a run with 2 outs and runners at 1st & 3rd. Both starters pitched well, giving up 1 earned run each. In the 8th inning, Barry Bonds broke the deadlock with a solo home run off of Bronson Arroyo. They added an insurance run in the 9th when Miguel Tejada tripled and scored off a sacrifice fly from Kennedy. 3-1 Isotopes heading into the bottom of the 9th. LaTroy Hawkins was pitching for the Isotopes in the bottom of the inning with a 2-run lead and was working on his 3rd inning of relief. After issuing a walk, the Springfield coach finally realized they were in a series winning situation and brought closer BJ Ryan on board. Ryan gave up a double to Gabe Kapler, sending Bautista to 3rd. Pinch hitter Aaron Miles popped out, failing to advance the runner. 1 out. Derek Jeter hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Bautista to cut the Isotopes lead to 1. Now it was up to Luis Gonzalez. A single would tie it, a home run would win it. But it was not to be. Gonzalez grounded out to 2nd to end the game and the SuperSquad's season. Springfield holds on to win game 4 by a score of 3-2 to take the AP Conference Finals series, and advance to their first CDBL World Series since 2000.
