Hong Kong has home field advantage on the records tiebreaker due to winning the regular season series 7 games to 5. ******************************************************************* ROUND 0 GAME -- Minutemen (Santana) at Cavaliers (Martinez). 162 regular season games boiled down to a 1 game, winner-take-all matchup between the Concord Minutemen and the Hong Kong Cavaliers. Pitching at home, longtime ace Pedro Martinez had an unusual case of nerves in the 1st, giving up a single to Lance Berkman and hitting Mark Teixeira. With 2 outs, Jeromy Burnitz went yard. 3-run home run, and the home team Cavaliers were in the hole. The Cavaliers had an opportunity to score in the 4th inning. Carlos Delgado singled and Larry Walker got a 2-out walk. D'Angelo Jimenez smacked a base hit, and Delgado motored around third. But the throw came home earlier than Delgado did, and he was tagged out. Still 3-0 Minutemen after 4 innings. The Cavaliers made another move in the 6th. Carlos Beltran got a 1 out walk, stole second, and scored on a base hit from Larry Walker. After Casey Blake was issued a 2 out walk (Santana would have 5 on the day), Gerald Laird came through, singling to score Walker and cut the Minutemen lead to 1. 3-2 Concord after 6 innings. By the time the 8th inning rolled around, both starters had exited the game, keeping the score 3-2 in Concord's favor. Against reliever Mike Stanton, Beltran ripped a solo home run, tying the game up at 3. A 162 game season now boiled down to a 1-inning sudden death playoff. In the top of the 9th, the Cavaliers kept in Vinnie Chulk, who had pitched a scoreless 8th. After striking out pinch hitter Dave McCarty, Chulk gave up a gopher ball to Troy Glaus. Concord was once again in front, 4-3. After striking out Mike Lieberthal, Chulk walked Lance Berkman. Steve Kline came on in relief. Kline was not effective, giving up a single to Mark Teixeira, then a 2-RBI triple to Burnitz. The Minutemen were up 6-3. After Kline walked Victor Diaz, Hong Kong *finally* brought in Brad Lidge. Lidge stopped the bleeding, striking out Mark Bellhorn, but the damage had been done. Concord was up 6-3 and were 3 outs away from advancing in the playoffs. The Minutemen brought out closer Troy Percival in the bottom of the 9th, his team up by 3. Brian Giles made his first appearance of the post-season as a pinch hitter, and grounded out to short after 4 pitches. Pinch hitter Quinton McCracken grounded out. And with 2 outs, pinch hitter Shane Spencer flied out to right. Jeromy Burnitz goes for 3/4 of a hitting cycle with 5 RBI as the Minutemen defeat the Cavaliers 6-3 in their round 0 matchup. Concord will advance to round 1 where they will face off against the Dragons.
