-- Minutemen (Brown) at Dragons (Harden). The Dragons made plenty use of their home field in game one, and they started right where they left off with a leadoff home run from Johnny Damon. In the 4th, with 2 on and 0 outs, Ty Wigginton doubled, scoring 2 runners. Wigginton wound up at 3rd on a throwing error in the ensuing fracas. With Santiago at bat, Santaigo knocked a grounder towards Kevin Brown, who bobbled it. Error to the pitcher, and Wigginton scored to make it 4-0 Avila. The Minutemen put themselves on the board in the 5th inning, when Mark Bellhorn singled and scored on a triple by pinch hitter Vance Wilson. Wilson himself scored on a passed ball to make it 4-2 Dragons. The Dragons added an insurance run in the 6th with a solo homer from Alex Rodriguez, and another solo home run from Jim Edmonds in the 7th. Rich Harden would have a great game, throwing 7 1/3 innings, giving up 4 hits and 1 earned run and struck out 8. Ray King pitched the 9th with a 4 run lead, and ended the game when Chipper Jones hit into a 1 out double play. Avila wins game 2 by a score of 6-2. Having won their first game of the series, the Minutemen were looking to send the series back to Avila. The Dragons had their first chance to win the series to move on to the conference finals. Avila jumped out to a quick lead in the 3rd with a solo home run from Jim Edmonds. In the bottom of the 3rd, Mark Bellhorn walked, moved to 2nd on a Roger Clemens wild pitch, and scored when Troy Glaus hit a grounder to Jose Hernandez, who misplayed it. Lance Berkman followed up with a 2-run home run, and the Minutemen took a 3-1 lead. They added 1 more run in the 5th with a 2nd home run from Berkman, and 2 more runs in the 6th on RBI singles from Johan Santana and Mark Bellhorn. Johan Santana had been pitching well from this point, giving up 1 run over 6 innings. In the top of the 7th, pinch hitter Cody Ransom doubled. Doug Mirabelli advanced Ransom to 3rd on a ground out, and Robb Quinlan smacked a base hit to score Ransom. 6-2 Minutemen. After Alex Rodriguez struck out to put 2 outs on the board, Santana gave up a walk to Jim Edmonds and was finished for the day. Felix Rodriguez was the new pitcher on the mound for Concord. Jose Hernandez hit a pop fly, but Mark Bellhorn dropped it for the error. Hernandez would walk to load the bases. Josh Phelps made it a costly error for Concord, smacking a bases clearing double. Concord's lead had shrunk to 1, leading 6-5 after 6 1/2 innings. In the bottom of the 7th, Mark Teixeira was the first batter to reach base that inning with a double. Jeromy Burnitz singled, scoring Teixeira. Chipper Jones followed up with a 2-run home run to give the Mintemen some breathing room. 9-5 Minutemen after 7. The score remained 9-5 heading into the top of the 9th. Mike Stanton was pitching for Concord. First batter up, Alex Rodriguez, flied out. Jim Edmonds doubled. The Minutemen brought out Shingo Takatsu to the mound. Jose Hernandez grounded out, putting 2 outs on the board. Takatsu threw a wild pitch while facing Doug Mientkiewicz, advancing Jim Edmonds to third. After that he settled down, getting Mientkiwicz to ground out to end the game. Concord wins game 5 by a score of 9-5, and send the series back to Avila for its conclusion. ******************************************************************* GAME SIX -- Minutemen (Brown) at Dragons (Harden). Back at Coors Field, Concord was trying to push a game seven, while this was chance #2 for Avila to advance to the GT conference finals. A single, an error and a wild pitch put Avila runners at 2nd & 3rd with 2 outs in the first inning. Aubrey Huff knocked a grounder to Deivi Cruz who bobbled the pickup. Error to the shortstop, and Avila scored their first run of the game. In the top of the 3rd, Ryan Klesko took advantage of the Coors Field effect, launching a ball over the wall to tie it up at 1. In the bottom of the inning, Mike Sweeney went yard to put Avila up 2-1 after 3. In the 5th, Rich Harden had a rough inning, giving up back to back to back home runs to Klesko, Troy Glaus and Lance Berkman. 4-2 Minutemen after 4 1/2 innings. Avila cut the lead to 1 in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run from Jim Edmonds. The Dragons tied it up in the 6th inning, when Doug Mirabelli singled, moved to 2nd on a walk to Ty Wigginton, moved to third on a Robb Quinlan sac bunt, and scored with a Johnny Damon base hit. In the bottom of the 7th inning, pinch hitter Benito Santiago brought the Dragons out in front with a solo home run for a 5-4 lead. Alex Rodriguez followed up with a 1 out solo home run. The Dragons later loaded the bases with 1 out, and Johnny Damon gave them their third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. 7-4 Avila after 7. The Minutemen would score a run in the 8th on a Mark Bellhorn single, and Concord would go into the top of the 9th trailing by 2. Rick Bauer was pitching for Avila, working on his 2nd inning. First batter up, pinch hitter Dave McCarty, grounded out. Ryan Klesko lined out to put 2 outs on the board. Troy Glaus and Lance Berkman each singled, putting runners at 1st & 3rd to bring the go-ahead run, Mark Teixeira to the plate with 2 outs. Teixeria hit a grounder to Jose Hernandez, who threw to first for the sure out -- if it didn't pull Doug Mientkiewicz off the bag. Error to Hernandez, and the Minutemen cut the lead to a single run. Bauer threw a wild pitch, advancing runners to 2nd & 3rd. Jeromy Burnitz was intentionally walked to load the bases. In the top of the 9th, the bases were loaded with 2 outs, the Minutemen down by 1, and the series on the line. At the plate was Vance Wilson. Wilson was having a good series, going 3 for 7 so far. But Wilson would hit a grounder to the middle infield, forcing Burnitz out at 2nd to end the game and the series. Avila hangs on to win game 6 by a score of 7-6, win their round 1 series in 6 games, and advance to the GT Conference Finals.
