2004 CDBL Playoff Preview Round 1 Anchorage Gold Diggers (97-65, Gehrig Division Winner) vs. Boston Bulldogs (96-66, GT Conference Wildcard) The Gold Diggers bested the rough and tumble Gehrig division, leading the division for most of the season on their way to their 2nd division title in 3 years. Melvin Mora was spectacular, hitting .356 with 59 doubles, 32 home runs, 140 runs scored and 110 RBI. Brad Wilkerson slugged .500 with 33 home runs, 130 runs scored and 136 RBI. Mike Cameron hit 36 home runs with 92 runs scored and 109 RBI. Lew Ford had a .365 on base average and 120 runs scored, while Jack Wilson drove in 109 runs. Catcher Jason Kendall hit .337 with a .411 on base average and 98 runs scored. David Wells went 14-7 with a 4.22 ERA, while Brian Lawrence and Jake Peavy finished with 13 wins. Closer duties were scattered throughout, with Brendan Donnelly leading with 14 saves and a 3.23 ERA. Relievers Rudy Seanez and Matt Miller were particularly effective, combining for 16 wins, 9 saves and ERA's in the low 3's. Boston ran with the Dragons near the top of hte Tiant division before settling for the GT conference wildcard. Bobby Abreu was the big run generator, posting a .410 on base average, 26 home runs, 127 runs scored and 34 stolen bases. Ray Durham had 17 home runs, 88 runs scored and 82 RBI, while Bill Mueller hit .291 with 73 runs scored. Rafael Palmerio hit .303 with 18 home runs and 69 RBI in 400 at bats. Randy Johnson was once again an ace, going 20-6 with a 3.17 ERA with 292 strikeouts. Oliver Perez finished with a 19-8 record, a 3.55 ERA and 253 strikeouts, and Carlos Zambrano went 18-10 with a 3.91 ERA and 211 strikeouts. Keith Foulke was a solid closer, saving 39 games with a 3.00 ERA. Boston's 2nd best team ERA in the majors will meet Anchorage's 3rd best offense in the majors in this round 1 matchup. Boston won the regular season series 6 games to 3, but Anchorage has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Bulldogs (Johnson) at Gold Diggers (Peavy). Bobby Abreu has been the main cog in the Bulldogs engine, and he wasted no time showing that off, hitting a double in the 1st and scoring on a double bty Craig Monroe. In the bottom of the 4th, Melvin Mora showed why he was the main cog in the Gold Diggers engine, walking, moving to 2nd on a Jerry Hairston walk, and then scoring on a Rondell White base hit. 1-1 tie ballgame after 4. In the bottom of the 7th, Jack Wilson struck out for out #1. Pinch hitter Tino Martinez was walked, and that ended Randy Johnson's day. With Damaso Marte in relief, Jason Kendall doubled, moving Martinez to 3rd. Nick Johnson hit a sacrifice bunt, scoring Martinez and Anchorage took a 2-1 lead. They made it 3-1 when Marte threw a wild pitch, scoring Kendall. 3-1 Anchorage after 7. In the 7th Melvin Mora had a near repeat of the 4th inning, getting a walk (his 3rd of the game), advancing to 2nd on a walk to Lew Ford, and scored on a single by Rondell White. 4-1 Gold Diggers heading into the 9th inning. Rudy Seanez was on the mound for Anchorage in the top of the 9th, working on his 2nd inning. First batter up, Ray Durham, popped out to first base. Jose Cruz walked to put a runner on base. After that, Seanez shut it down, striking out Jamey Carroll and getting Brady Clark to ground out to end the game. Anchorage wins game 1 of this round 1 series by a score of 4-1. Jack Wilson started things off for Anchorage in the 2nd inning, smacking a 2-out base hit, moving to 2nd on a single from Brian Roberts, and scored when pitcher Brian Lawrence singled. 1-0 Anchorage after 2. The Bulldogs made their presence known in the 3rd inning, rocketing to a 2-1 lead on a 2-run blast from Craig Monroe. In the 6th inning, Boston scored again when Rafael Palmeiro hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a bunt single from Ray Durham, and scored on a Jose Cruz sacrifice fly. 3-1 Boston. Lawrence struggled in the 7th inning, allowing runners at 1st & 3rd with 1 out, then allowing Monroe to drive in another run with a sacrifice fly. 4-1 Boston. With Palmeiro at the plate, Lawrence gave up a gopher ball. 2-run shot, and Boston was up 6-1. Borkowski arrived in relief, but gave up a double to Durham and an RBI single to Omar Vizquel before ending the inning. Boston added an insurance run in the 8th for a formidable 8-1 lead. Rheal Cormier was pitching for Boston in the bottom of the 9th with a 7-run lead. Melvin Mora greeted Cormier with a solo home run. Brad Wilkerson doubled, and pinch hitter Jeff Keppinger singled, scoring Wilkerson. Keith Foulke came on in relief, still with a 5-run lead. Jack Wilson singled, and Rondell White doubled, scoring another runner. Now a 4-run lead. Todd Pratt hit a sacrifice fly, cutting Boston's lead to 3 runs with 1 out. That was where Anchorage's rally would sputter out, as Jason Kendall grounded out and Larry Bigbie struck out to end the game. Boston wins game 2 by a score of 8-5 to tie up the series. The Gold Diggers knew Jeff Fassero was going to be a shaky starter. In the 1st inning Fassero loaded the bases, and gave up the first run of the game with a Jose Cruz sacrifice fly. In the 3rd inning, with Bobby Abreu at 2nd, Ray Durham singled, scoring another run. Tino Martinez went yard, giving Boston a 4-0 lead. Fassero lasted 4 innings. Meanwhile, Joe Kennedy was everything the Bulldogs were hoping for and more, throwing a shutout through 7 innings. In the bottom of the 8th, with 2 outs, Kennedy gave up his first run of the game on a solo home run to Melvin Mora. 4-1 Boston heading into the 9th inning. Keith Foulke was pitching the 9th for the 3rd straight game, this time with a 3-run lead. First batter he faced, Jack Wilson, lined out. After Joe McEwing singled, Foulke was pulled in favor of Damaso Marte. Marte gave up a single to Jason Kendall. Then another single to Nick Johnson to load the bases. Pinch hitter Anderson Machado (not listed as a pinch hitter vs lefties) came on and singled, scoring a run to cut Boston's lead to 2. Marte was pulled in favor of Salomon Torroes who faced Mora. Mora came through in a big way, smacking a base hit to center field, scoring Kendall and Johnson. 4-4 tie ballgame. Lew Ford completed the Anchorage comeback, a base hit RBI to score Machado. Anchorage took the lead, 5-4. In the bottom of the 9th, the Gold Diggers were in a much different position than they were in the 8th, holding onto a 1 run lead. Jamey Carroll was the first batter up, and flied out for out #1. Jose Cruz smacked a double. Jay Payton singled to move Cruz to 3rd, with 1 out. Jason LaRue hit a fly out, but it was too shallow to score the runner at 3rd. With 2 outs, pinch hitter Omar Vizquel couldn't come through, grounding out to end the game. Anchorage once again takes advantage of a shaky late inning situation to win game 4 by a score of 5-4. The Gold Diggers were up 3-2 in the series, and the Bulldogs had the extra difficulty of having to win on the road. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Carlos Zambrano ran into trouble, loading the bases with 0 outs. Melvin Mora grounded into a double play, which allowed a runner to score to give Anchorage an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the 4th, Boston tied it up when Craig Monroe tripled and scored on a groundout from Rafael Palmeiro. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Tino Martinez was given a leadoff walk. Melvin Mora has been the man for the Gold Diggers, and continued to be so, hitting a 2-run shot to give Anchorage a 3-1 lead. Brad Wilkerson walked and Mike Cameron doubled, putting runners at 2nd & 3rd with 0 outs. Jack Wilson singled, scoring a run. With 2 outs, Jason Kendall doubled, scoring 2 more runs.
