2004 CDBL Playoff Preview Gehrig/Tiant Conference Finals Anchorage Gold Diggers (97-65, Gehrig Division Winner, 4-2 over Bulldogs in Round 1) vs. Avila Dragons (104-58, Tiant Division Winner, 4-2 over Minutemen in Round 1) The Gold Diggers bested the rough and tumble Gehrig division, leading the division for most of the season on their way to their 2nd division title in 3 years. They then bested the Boston Bulldogs in 6 games to make the GT Conference finals. Melvin Mora was hot during the series, hitting .591 with 4 home runs, 8 runs scored and 10 RBI in 22 at bats. Brad Wilkerson slugged .647 with 2 home runs and 6 runs scored, while Jason Kendall had a .345 on base average with 4 runs scored. Jake Peavy was 2-0 in 2 starts with a 1.32 ERA, and David Wells pitched 6 innings, giving up 1 earned run in his lone start. Rudy Seanez had 2 saves with a 2.08 ERA, and Jose Mesa and Phil Norton combined to throw 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief. The Avila Dragons held court over the Tiant division, leading for most of the season on their way to winning 104 games and the division title by 8 games. They defeated the Concord Minutemen in 6 games in their round 1 matchup. The Dragons as a team hit .308 with a .598 slugging average. Jim Edmonds hit .391 with 3 home runs and 7 runs scored, while Alex Rodrigeuz hit .318 with 3 home runs, 6 runs scored and 6 RBI. Ty Wigginton hit .462 with 5 RBI, and Doug Mirabelli and Benito Santiago combined to hit in the mid .400's with 6 runs and 4 RBI between tehm. Rich Harden was 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 2 starts, and Carlos Almanzar and Ray King have combined to throw 9 innings of shutout relief, with King picking up 2 saves. In 9 regular season games, the Dragons won the season series 6 games to 3. Avila has home field advantage due to their higher playoff seeding. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Gold Diggers (Peavy) at Dragons (Clemens). Early on, things were looking uncharacteristically quiet at Coor Field, as neither team scored in the 1st 3 innings. In the 4th, Anchorage was the first team to score with a solo home run from Melvin Mora. In the top of the 5th, Roger Clemens got into trouble, loading the bases with 1 out. With Mora at the plate, he managed to eek out an infield single, scoring a run. Brad Wilkerson grounded out, scoring another run. 3-0 Gold Diggers. Mike Cameron smacked a base hit, scoring 2 more runners. Jack Wilson followed up with an RBI double, putting Anchroage up 6-0. Clemens was done for the day. Anchorage would also score a few more runs in the later innings to keep the game well out of reach. The Gold Diggers beat Avila at their own game, winning game 1 by a final score of 9-4. After being surprised in a game 1 loss, the Dragons came out swinging. In the bottom of the 2nd, Alex Rodriguez put Avila out front with a solo home run. In the 6th, Benito Santiago hit a leadoff single, moved to 2nd on a Rich Harden sac bunt, and scored on a base hit from Johnny Damon. They made it 3-0 in the 7th with a solo shot from Jose Hernandez, and added one more in the 8th when Ray King singled, moved to 3rd on a Damon base hit and scored on a Jim Edmonds sacrifice fly. Rich Harden had a strong game, throwing 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball. Ray King was on the mound in the top of the 9th with a 4-run lead. He made things exciting by loading the bases with 1 out, but escaped with the save when he got pinch hitter Joe McEwing to hit into a game ending double play. Avila wins game 2 by a score of 4-0 to tie up the series. Avila cut the lead to 1 in the top of the 2nd with a Josh Phelps solo home run. In the bottom of the inning, Brian Walker singled, move to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt from Jeff Fassero, moved to third on a fly out from Jason Kendall, and scored on an infield single from Larry Bigbie. 3-1 Anchorage after 2 innings. The Dragons scored again in the 6th when Jim Edmonds smashed a 1-1 pitch over the right field wall for a solo home run. In the 7th, pinch hitter Robb Quinlan reached 2nd base on error when Jeff Fassero threw away the pitch to first base. Alex Rodriguez singled, scoring Quinlan to even up the game at 3. Ray King was pitching for the Dragons in the bottom of the 8th. With 2 outs, pinch hitter Scott Hairston singled, and pinch hitter Nick Johnson was hit by a pitch, putting 2 runners on. Jason Kendall broke the tie, singling in Hairston to put the Gold Diggers up 4-3. Rudy Seanez was pitching for Anchorage in the top of the 9th with a 1 run lead. Seanez had a rough start, giving up a walk to Aubrey Huff and an infield single to Endy Chavez. Pinch hitter Johnny Damon changed the game with one swing, smacking a 2-RBI triple to give Avila a 5-4 lead. Jim Edmonds grounded out, allowing Damon to store. Roger Clemens had a start to game five that he would have rather forgotten, giving up a 2-out bases loaded grand slam to Mike Cameron. The Dragons hitters would not be deterred, scoring 4 runs of their own in the top of the 2nd on RBI's from Doug Mirabelli, Ty Wigginton, Johnny Damon and Mike Sweeney. Anchorage scored another run in the bottom of the 2nd and Avila scored another run in the top of the 3rd to make it 5-5 after 3 innings. Neither Jake Peavy nor Roger Clemens were aces today. In the top of the 6th with 2 on, Mike Sweeney doubled, scoring both runners. The bottom of the Dragons order came through again in the 7th, when Wigginton singled in a run and a Jose Hernandez ground out scored another runner to make it 9-5 Avila. Anchorage was not out of the running, closing the lead to 2 in the bottom of the 7th with a 2-run blast from Melvin Mora. The Gold Diggers made it 9-8 later in the inning with a Mike Cameron double. The score remained 9-8 Avila heading into the bottom of the 9th. Closer Ray King was on the mound for Avila, 3 outs from the world series. Lew Ford popped out. Anderson Machado singled to put the tying run at first. Todd Pratt struck out for out #2. Pinch hitter Scott Hairston was at the plate for Anchorage. A home run would win the game, an out would end Anchorage's season. Hairston hit a deep fly ball to center field .. back .. back .. back .. dying .. into the glove of Jim Edmonds. A difference of a few feet decided the game. Avila wins a slugfest game 5 by a score of 9-8, and advance to the CDBL World Series.
