2004 CDBL ALL-STAR GAME The 2004 CDBL All-Star game was held at the Metrodome, home field of the Springfield Isotopes, the team with the best record at the break. The Isotope hitters started things off in the bottom of the 1st, when Mark Kotsay hit a leadoff single and Barry Bonds drove them both in with a home run. Jim Thome of the Thunder hit a solo home run to give the AP All-Stars a 3-0 lead. The GT All-Stars cut into the lead in the 4th, when Concord's Mark Teixeira hit a grounder to Thunder closer Mariano Rivera in a bases loaded situation, which Rivera booted. Anchorage's Melvin Mora scored and the game was now 3-1. The lead was cut to 1 in the 5th when Mora hit a ground out with runners and 2nd & 3rd, scoring a run. In the bottom of the 5th with the bases loaded, Springfield's Ivan Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Bonds from 3rd. 4-2 AP All-Stars after 5. The score remained 4-2 AP All-Stars heading into the top of the 9th. Juan Rincon of the Mashers was pitching. After Dedham slugger Jason Bay tripled, Jason Isringhausen of the Chickens was brought on. Ichiro hit a fly ball to Gary Sheffield, who misplayed it. Bay scored on the error and the lead was now down to 1. Bangor 1B Phil Nevin singled, sending Ichiro to 3rd. Pilots infielder Mark Loretta smacked a single, scoring fellow teammate Ichiro Suzuki from 3rd. We now had a tie ball-game. And there were no more players in reserve, which meant that Jason Isringhausen and Milwaukee closer Eric Gagne would remain in the game until it was over. The AP All-Stars would not score in the bottom of the 9th, and the game would go well into extra innings. Both closers would pitch 5 innings, putting in a starter's workload. Gagne buckled first, loading the bases with 2 outs in the bottom of the 13th, and ending the game by giving up a bases loaded walk to Khalil Greene, forcing in the winning run. The AP All-Stars win the 2004 CDBL All-Star game by a score of 5-4 in 13 innings of play. 2004 CDBL ALL-STAR MVP: San Diego's manager would have to be miffed at the usage, but Chickens closer Jason
