2003 CDBL Playoff Preview Aaron/Paige Conference Finals Manhatten Beach Mashers (110-52, Aaron Division Winner, 1st Round Bye) vs. Springfield Isotopes (90-72, Paige Division Winner, 4-3 over Trout in Round 1) The Mashers dominated the Aaron/Paige conference throughout the season, clinching home field advantage and notched a 1st round bye. Bret Boone hit .280 with 32 home runs, 115 runs scored and 102 RBI. David Ortiz slugged .614 with 37 home runs, 81 runs scored and 101 RBI in just 433 at bats. Greg Myers hit .347 with 19 home runs and 63 runs scored in just 349 at bats. Jay Payton hit .280 with 19 home runs, 91 runs scored and 95 RBI. Acquisition Mark Prior was stellar, going 16-3 for the team with a 2.41 ERA (and won 21 games overall). Darrell May went 22-3 with a 2.34 ERA, and Mark Redman and CC Sabathia combined to win 29 games. Closer John Smoltz saved 37 games, won another 6 and sported a 2.72 ERA. The Isotopes handily won the Paige division title, but needed all 7 games in their round 1 series to polish off the Trout. Barry Bonds was a big threat, sporting a .469 on base average, 2 home runs, 6 runs scored and 6 RBI. Gary Sheffield hit .300 with 3 runs scored and 5 RBI, while Miguel Tejada hit .364 with 3 runs scored. Curt Schilling was 1-0 with a 1.20 ERA in 2 starts, and Kenny Rogers was 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA in 2 starts. In 9 regular season games, the Mashers won the series 6 games to 3. The Mashers have home field advantage due to their higher seeding. The Mashers and Isotopes have faced each other in the playoffs 5 other teams - the stretch between 1992 and 1996. Adam Kennedy wasted no time in getting Springfield's offense going, hitting a leadoff single. With 2 outs and Kennedy at second, Barry Bonds was given an intentional walk. The next batter up, Travis Hafner, doubled, scoring 2 runs. 2-0 Springfield after 1 inning of play. In the bottom of the 2nd, David Ortiz smashed a solo home run to give the Mashers their first run of the series. They tied up the game in the 3rd, when Mike Bordick singled, moved to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt from Mark Prior, moved to third on a ground out from Jody Gerut, and scored on a single from Greg Myers. Springfield re-took the lead in the 4th inning on a 2-on, 2-out RBI double from David Ross. 3-2 Springfield after 4 innings. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Bret Boone hit a leadoff double, and himself was doubled in by David Ortiz. 3-3 ballgame. Morgan Ensberg doubled, scoring Ortiz. With 2 outs, Mike Bordick singled, scoring another Mashers run to put them up 5-3. Bordick added another insurance run in the 8th with an RBI single. Bordick would finish the day 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. John Smoltz came on in the 9th and pitched a scoreless inning, striking out 2 batters on his way to the save. The Mashers win game 1 by a score of 6-3. The Isotopes played the first game of the series in their home stadium, looking for a win. The Isotopes were the first team to score, when Miguel Tejada doubled in Chris Stynes in the 1st inning. They were also the 2nd team to score when Stynes hit a 2-out RBI single in the 2nd inning, scoring Carlos Febles from 2nd. 2-0 Isotopes after 2 innings. It was in the 3rd when Isotopes starter Kenny Rogers ran into trouble. With runners at 1st & 2nd, Rogers balked, advancing them 90 feed. Morgan Ensberg singled, scoring a runner. Eduardo Perz singled, scoring another runner to tie the game up at 2. Jeff DaVanon smoked a grounder to Ken Harvey, who misplayed the ball. Bases loaded, error to the first baseman. The next batter, Damian Miller, smacked a clutch single, scoring 2 more runners. A 4-run Mashers inning put Manhatten Beach up 4-2. The Isotopes cut the lead to 1 when Gary Sheffield hit an RBI double in the 4th, but the Mashers answered with a Eduardo Perez RBI single in the 5th. The Mashers and Isotopes also traded a run in the 7th inning to make it a 6-4 Mashers game. The score would remain 6-4 Mashers heading into the bottom of the 9th. John Smoltz was on the mound for Manhatten Beach, facing the top of the order. Chris Stynes flied out. Sheffield singled, putting the tying run, pinch hitter AJ Hinch, at the plate. Hinch flied out. 2 outs. Up came Barry Bonds, the most dangerous hitter in the league. A home run would tie it up, but Smoltz got the better of him, getting him to fly out to end the game. The Mashers win game 3 by a score of 6-4, and are a win away from advancing to the 2003 CDBL World Series. Down 0-3 in the series, Springfield was in a must-win situation. In the bottom of the 1st with 2 runners on, Barry Bonds singled, scoring a run. Miguel Tejada also singled to load the bases. With 1 out, Brad Ausmus scored the Isotopes' 2nd run of the game with a sacrifice fly. The Isotopes found themselves in another scoring opportunity in the 2nd, loading the bases with 2 outs bringing Barry Bonds to the plate. Bonds proved why he's such a dangerous hitter, smashing it over the wall for a grand slam home run. 6-0 Isotopes. Bonds wasn't done yet, smacking a 3-run blast in the 4th inning. Then another 3-run blast in the 6th inning. Bonds finished the day going 4 for 4 with 3 home runs and a playoff record 11 RBI. The Mashers did eventually score 4 runs in the 9th, but the game was well out of reach by then. Barry Bonds single-handedly wins game 4 for the Isotopes by a score of 12-4, and the Isotopes live to fight another day. Having won their first game of the series, the Isotopes were looking to send it back to Manhatten Beach. For the Mashers, it was chance #2 at advancing to the CDBL World Series. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Eric Munson put Springfield up 3-0 with a 3-run shot off of Mark Prior. In the 6th, Barry Bonds walked, moved to third on a single from Mark Kotsay, and scored on a single from Munson. Meanwhile, Curt Schilling was working on a shutout heading into the top of the 9th inning, his team up 4-0. Schlling gave up singles to Austin Kearns and Jody Gerut to bring Morgan Ensberg at the plate. Ensberg hit into a double play, putting 2 outs on the board but sending Kearns to 3rd. After Jeff DaVanon walked, Schilling was pulled in favor of Joey Eischen. Facing Juan Rivera, Eischen got Rivera to line out to the pitcher. Eric Munson is Springfield's hero of the day, driving in all 4 of their runs as Springfield wins game 5 by a score of 4-0. Once up 3-0, the Mashers were on a 2 game losing streak. Springfield needed a win here to make it to game 7. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Lou Merloni got a leadoff walk, moved to third on a double from Bret Boone, and scored on a sacrifice fly from David Ortiz. Austin Kearns singled, scoring Boone to put Manhatten Beach up 2-0 in the 1st. In the 3rd inning, David Ortiz hit a solo home run for a 3-0 lead. Barry Bonds put the Isotopes on the board in the 4th inning, hitting a solo home run. But the Mashers added 2 more in the bottom of the inning off RBIs from Merloni and Greg Myers. Willie Bloomquist would add an RBI in the top of the 5th, but that would be as close as Springfield would get. The Mashers piled on 4 more runs in the 6th inning in a bases loaded situation across multiple batters. By the time Willie Bloomquist struck out to end the 9th inning the game had been decided for some time. Manhatten Beach wins game 6 by a score of 10-2 to advance to the CDBL World Series.
