2003 CDBL Playoff Preview Round 1 Springfield Isotopes (90-72, Paige Division Winner) vs. Elk Grove Trout (87-75, Aaron/Paige Conference Wildcard) Springfield found themselves in familiar territory, winning the Paige division title for the 3rd time in 4 years. Barry Bonds had another stellar year, hitting .350 with a .509 on base average, 44 home runs, 123 runs scored and 130 RBI. Gary Sheffield hit .356 with 38 home runs, 153 runs scored and 101 RBI, while Miguel Tejada hit .287 with 92 runs scored and 104 RBI. Mark Kotsay hit .300 with 82 runs scored and 87 RBI. Tim Redding was 21-4 with a 3.80 ERA, and Joey Eischen went 10-1 wiht a 2.11 ERA in relief. Closer LaTroy Hawkins saved 32 games, won another 6 and sported a 2.18 ERA. The Trout were written off at the mid-season break, but staged a furious 2nd half rally to capture their first playoff spot since 1991. Magglio Ordonez hit .344 with 27 home runs, 105 runs scored and 106 RBI, while Garrett Anderson hit .333 with 32 home runs, 85 runs scored and 102 RBI. Shannon Stewart hit .330 with 23 home runs, 107 runs scored and 82 RBI. Mark Grudzielanek hit .311 with 81 runs scored. Randy Wolf went 18-9, while Ben Sheets was 15-10 with a 4.11 ERA. Closer Jose Valverde saved 32 games with a 1.93 ERA. In 9 regular season games, the Isotopes won the series matchup 6 games to 3. Springfield has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Trout (Wolf) at Isotopes (Schilling). In the opening inning on the opening series in front of the home crowd the Isotopes showed they were ready to play. Gary Sheffield got a 1 out walk and moved to 3rd on a base hit from Ken Harvey. Barry Bonds walked to load the bases. Miguel Tejada singled, scoring a runner to put Springfield up 1-0. Randy Wolf threw a wild pitch, scoring Harvey. Wolf continued to struggle, walking Ausmus to re-load the bases. A Mark Kotsay groundout scored another runner, giving the Isotopes a 3-0 lead after 1 inning of play. Both starters locked it down after that, as the next run to score would be in the 7th, when Robert Fick smacked a solo home run off of Curt Schilling. Schilling would have a strong outing, going 8 innings, giving up 4 hits, 1 earned run and struck out 10. The game remained 3-1 Isotopes heading into the top of the 9th. Isotopes closer LaTroy Hawkins was on the mound for the save opportunity. First batter up, Magglio Ordonez, singled. Ramon Hernandez got a base hit as well, putting 2 runners on to bring Robert Fick at the plate. Fick must have eaten his Wheaties this morning (or .. something..) as Fick went yard for the 2nd straight at bat. 3-run home run, and suddenly the Trout were up 4-3. The team's fortunes were now reversed in the bottom of the 9th. Elk Grove was hanging on to a 1 run lead. Jose Valverde was pitching for the Trout, and Springfield had 3 outs to try and score a run. Chris Stynes popped out and Gary Sheffield struck out to put 2 quick outs on the board. Pinch hitter Travis Hafner gave the Isotopes some hope, notching a 2 out triple to put a runner at 3rd. The Trout wisely walked Barry Bonds to bring Miguel Tejada to the plate. A single would tie it up and anything more might win it. But it was not to be. Tejada lined out to center field to end the game. Elk Grove wins game 1 by a score of 4-3 behind the mighty bat of Robert Fick. After shocking the Isotopes in the final inning of game 1, the Trout were ready to play in game 2. In the top of the 1st, Mark Grudzielanek hit a 1 out double, moved to third on a ground out from Garrett Anderson and scored on a Magglio Ordonez double. 1-0 Trout after 1. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Miguel Tejada and Barry Bonds walked. Travis Hafner smacked a triple off of Trout starter Ben Sheets, scoring 2 runners. Hafner scored on a sacrifice fly from Mark Kotsay to put Springfield up 3-1 after 6 innings. In the 7th inning, Ramon Hernandez and Robert Fick singled for the Trout. Wes Helms flied out, advancing Hernandez to third. Pinch hitter BJ Surhoff got a key hit, smacking a double to score Hernandez and cut Springfield's lead to 1. Pinch hitter Marquis Grissom followed up wtih an RBI single, scoring 2 runners. Tim Redding was done for the day as the Trout took a 4-3 lead. Springfield would not go quietly. In the 8th inning, Tejada singled, moved to 2nd on a base hit from Travis Hafner and scored on a single from pinch hitter Ryan Ludwick. 4-4 ballgame. Neither side would score in the 9th, so the game would go into extra innings. LaTroy Hawkins regained his confidence from game 1, throwing a scoreless 9th & 10th inning for Springfield. Joey Eischen was pitching for the Isotopes in the top of the 11th. The leadoff batter for the Trout, Garret Anderson, singled. But Magglio Ordonez struck out and Ramon Hernandez hit into a double play to end the side with the game still tied at 4 heading into the bottom of the 11th inning. Mike Timlin was pitching into his 2nd inning of relief for the Trout in the bottom of the 11th. Rene Reyes grounded out for out #1. Eric Munson came to the plate. On the 2nd pitch, Munson belted one over the right field wall. Home run, and the game ended with victory for the Isotopes. Springfield wins game 2 by a score of 5-4 in extra innings.
