2003 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Gehrig/Tiant Conference Finals Dedham Destroyers (106-56, GT Conference Wildcard, 4-3 over Cavaliers in Round 1) vs. Milwaukee Pilots (110-52, Tiant Division Winner 4-1 over Bulldogs in Round 1) The Destroyers competed in the tough Tiant division and captured the GT Conference wildcard, then went on the road to beat the Cavaliers in 7 games. Veteran Mike Piazza is hitting .381 with 6 runs scored and 5 RBI, while Bill Mueller is hitting .333 with 5 runs scored and 5 RBI. Richard Hidalgo and Angel Berroa each had 8 RBI. Brian Giles is hitting .281 with 5 runs scored and 4 RBI. In 2 starts, Brian Anderson threw 14 innings with a 2.57 ERA against a tough Pedro Martinez. Eric Gagne has been stellar, throwing 5 innings of shutout, hitless relief in 4 appearances, notching 3 saves. The Pilots sported the best record in the majors in 2003 and captured their first ever Tiant division pennant. They bested the Bulldogs in their round 1 matchup in 5 games to advance to the conference finals. As a team they hit .285 in the series. Doug Mientkiewicz hit .429 with 4 runs scored, Ichiro Suzuki hit .368 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI, Vernon Wells hit .333 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBI, while Jorge Posada hit .333 with 5 runs scored and 4 RBI. David Wells pitched a complete game shutout in his lone start, and of the 4 starters (who each won a game), Livan Hernandez had the highest ERA - at 3.07. Rafael Soriano made two scoreless appearances, notching a save. In 12 regular season games, the Destroyers won the season series 7 games to 5. Milwaukee has home field advantage due to their higher playoff seeding. The Tiant division was the strongest division in the CDBL this year, and this conference finals will determine which team gets to represent at the 2003 CDBL World Series. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Destroyers (Nomo) at Pilots (Hernandez). The two teams got off to a rousing start. Brian Giles launched a solo shot in the 3rd, and Casey Blake answered in the bottom of the inning with a home run of his own. 1-1 After 3. In the 4th inning, Richard Hidalgo doubled and scored on a triple from Brad Wilkerson. 2-1 Dedham after 4 innings of play. In the 6th inning, Hidalgo hit a leadoff home run. Livan Hernandez continued to struggle, loading the bases with 0 outs. He walked Angel Berroa to force in a run. After striking out Hideo Nomo, he walked Brian Giles, forcing in another run. 5-1 Destroyers after 6 innings of play. Dedham added 2 more insurance runs in the 8th inning for a 7-1 Destroyers lead. Hideo Nomo was still pitching for Dedham in the bottom of the 8th, but started getting fatigued. He gave up a leadoff single to Jorge Posada. With a runner at first and pinch hitter Michael Ryan at the plate, Ryan went yard. 2-run blast, and Dedham's lead was cut to 4. Damasco Marte was put on in relief. With 2 outs, Casey Blake doubled. Eric Gagne came on in relief to stop the rally. But even Gagne showed he was touchable, giving up a 2-run blast from pinch hitter Ramon Castro. 7-5 Destroyers after 8 innings. Gagne remained in the game in the bottom of the 9th with a 2-run lead, facing the heart of the Pilots order. First batter up, Vernon Wells, grounded out. Jorge Posada popped out. And Ichiro struck out. The mighty Pilots hitters were no match for the mighty Eric Gagne in the 9th inning as Dedham takes game 1 by a score of 7-5. After losing home field advantage in game 1, the Pilots were prepared to play in game 2. In the bottom of the 2nd, with 2 outs and 2 on, pitcher Kevin Brown got a clutch hit, driving in 2 runs. Then Doug Mientkiewicz smacked a grounder towards D'Angelo Jimenez, who bobbled it. Safe at first was Mientkiewicz and Jimenez was charged with an error. Ichiro walked to load the bases. Carlos Guillen smacked a single, scoring a runner. Then Vernon Wells singled, scoring 2 more runners to knock Brian Anderson out of the game. 5-0 Pilots after 2 innings. The Pilots were not done with the run parade, scoring 2 more in the 3rd, another one in the 5th and for good measure 6 more in the 6th. By the time the Destroyers scored their first two runs in the 9th inning it was too late. Milwaukee gets their groove back, defeating the Destroyers 14-2. The top of the 2nd inning started out innocently enough for Greg Maddux. Mark Loretta had reached first base on an error from Angel Berroa. After Rafael Furcal singled, Casey Blake struck out. David Wells hit a sacrifice bunt, advancing the runners to 2nd & 3rd with 2 outs. Then, Milton Bradley got a clutch single, scoring Loretta to put Milwaukee up 1-0. Doug Mientkiewicz singled, scoring Furcal. 2-0 Milwaukee. Vernon Wells followed up with a 3-run blast. 5 runs off of Greg Maddux with 2 outs in the 2nd, all of them unearned, and Maddux was done for the day. David Wells had a couple of tight spots himself. In the bottom of the 3rd, with 2 on and 2 out, Wells got out of the inning by striking out Bill Mueller. In the bottom of the 4th, Wells loaded the bases with 1 out. But he got Bengie Molina to stirke out and Alex Cora to ground out to escape for the 2nd straight inning. In the bottom of the 5th, with 2 on and 2 outs, Wells got Hidalgo to fly out. In the 6th, Wells was once again in a 2 on, 2 out situation. But this time, pinch hitter Doug Glanville came through, singling to score a runner. 5-1 Pilots after 6. Dedham would not score again. Octavio Dotel came on in relief for Milwaukee to throw 3 walkless, hitless, scoreless innings as the Pilots win game 3 by a final score of 6-1 to take back home field advantage. FOUR -- Pilots (Escobar) at Destroyers (Myers). It has not been a good post-season for Destroyers starter Brett Myers. In the top of the 1st, Milton Bradley hit a leadoff double and scored on a single from Doug Mientkiewicz. Vernon Wells sent them both home with a 2-run shot. In the 2nd, Rafael Furcal got a leadoff walk and scored on a Bradley double. In the third, Myers allowed two baserunners on before being pulled in favor of Paul Shuey. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Kelvim Esocbar helped out his own cause with a 2-RBI single. Bradley singled as well, scoring another runner. 7-0 Pilots after 3. Milwaukee was not done scoring. In the 4th, Vernon Wells made it to 2nd on a fielding error by Brad Wilkerson. Wells advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored on a Mark Loretta sacrifice fly. 8-0 Milwaukee after 4. The Destroyers had found themselves in a hole before and were able to dig out of it. In the bottom of the 5th, Todd Helton put Dedham on the board with a 3-run home run. In the 6th inning, with runners at 1st & 2nd with pinch hitter Jason Bay at the plate, a passed ball from Jorge Posada advanced the runners 90 feet. The very next pitch, Bay swung at to strike out, but Posada didn't catch it, leading to a 2nd straight passed ball. A runner scored, and the score was 8-4 Milwaukee. Angel Berroa grounded into a double play, letting another runner score. The Pilots lead was cut to 3. Unfortunately for Dedham, that would be as close as they would get. Milwaukee scored an insurance run in the 8th, and another in the 9th off of Eric Gagne. Brian Giles did hit a solo home run in the 9th, but it was too little, too late. The Pilots win game 4 by a score of 10-6, and are a win away from advancing to the CDBL World Series. ******************************************************************* GAME FIVE -- Pilots (Hernandez) at Destroyers (Nomo). Since game 2 it has been all Milwaukee. Dedham was looking to win the last game on their home turf, and the Pilots were looking to advance to the CDBL World Series. Livan Hernandez struggled in the 1st inning, giving up a leadoff single to Brian Giles, then giving up a sore on an RBI triple from Todd Helton. Richard Hidalgo singled, scoring Helton to put Dedham up 2-0 after 1 inning. In the top of the 2nd, Rafael Furcal singled, then Casey Blake walked. Hernandez grounded a double play ball to Angel Berroa, but Berroa threw it away throwing to first. Furcal scored to cut Dedham's lead to 1. The Destroyers started to pull away in the next couple of innings. In the 3rd, Helton walked and scored on a Hidalgo triple. Hidalgo scored on a fielder's choice ground out from Brad Wilkerson. In the 4th, Hidalgo connected on a 3-run blast. 7-1 Dedham after 4 onnings. Despite having a 6-run lead, no lead is safe in this series. In the 5th inning, with 2 runners on, Furcal smacked a single up the middle, scoring 2 runners. With 2 on and 2 outs, Milton Bradley smacked a single up the middle, scoring another 2 runners. 4 run Milwaukee inning, and Dedham's lead was now 7-5. The Destroyers added 3 more insurance runs in the 6th & 7th innings to make it 10-5 heading into the 8th inning. Milwaukee scored once in the 8th on a solo home run from Vernon Wells. 10-6 Dedham after 8 innings of play. Heading into the top of the 9th, Dedham had a 4-run lead, and Eric Gagne was on the mound. Gagne got Bradley and Doug Mietkiewicz to strike out, putting 2 quick outs on the board. After Vernon Well singled, Gagne was pulled in favor of Salomon Torres. Torres threw a wild pitch, advancing the runner. Torres then walked Jorge Posada. Ichiro smacked a double, scoring Wells to increase Gagne's conference finals ERA to an uncharacteristically high 6.23. Chase Utley singled, scoring Posada and Ichiro. 3 runs had scored with 2 outs in the top of the 9th, and the Pilots found themselves down by a mere run, with the go-ahead run, Furcal at the plate. Torres was pulled in favor of Damaso Marte. Marte was able to stop the bleeding for Dedham, getting Furcal to pop out to Doug Mirabelli at home plate to end the game. The Destroyers win a high scoring game 10-9 to send the series back to Milwaukee. ******************************************************************* GAME SIX -- Destroyers (Anderson) at Pilots (Brown). A big game for both teams. Dedham needed a win to get to game 7, while for Milwaukee this was their 2nd chance at advancing to the CDBL World Series. Pilots starter Kevin Brown struggled early. With the first pitch of the game, Brian Giles launched it over the wall for a solo home run. Brown loaded the bases in the top of the 2nd before getting Bill Mueller to ground out. Still 1-0 Dedham. In the bottom of the 2nd, Mark Loretta walked, and Rafael Furcal went long. 2-run home run, and Milwaukee was up 2-1. With 1 out, Casey Blake hit a solo home run, extending the Pilots lead to 2. The Loretta/Furcal connection continued in the 4th, when Loretta hit a leadoff double and scored on a base hit from Furcal. 4-1 Pilots after 4. The Destroyers closed the gap in the middle innings. In the 5th, Richard Hidalgo tagged Brown with a 2-run home run to cut Milwaukee's lead to 1. In the 6th, Doug Mirabelli hit a leadoff home run. 4-4 tie game. Brian Anderson was still pitching for the Destroyers in the top of the 7th when Doug Mientkiewicz hit a leadoff home run (his first in the series) to put the Pilots up by 1. Kevin Brown would pitch 7 2/3 innings before closer supreme Rafael Soriano was brought in. Soriano started the top of the 9th with a 1 run lead and 3 outs from sending the Pilots to the CDBL World Series. First batter up, Angel Berroa, struck out. Marco Scutaro lined out. 2 outs. 1 out away from the CDBL World Series. The Destroyer's season rested on the shoulders of Brian Giles. Giles was having a good game, going 2 for 3, and his hustle on a ground ball resulted in an infield single. The next batter, Bill Mueller, walked. 2 on, 2 out, and arguably Dedham's best hitter, Todd Helton, was at the plate. A single would tie it up, anything more would put the Destroyers ahead. Unfortunately for the Destroyers, this is where their season would end. Helton popped out to third base to end the game and Dedham's season. Milwaukee wins game 6 by a score of 5-4 to advance to the CDBL World Series.
