The Bulldogs were on the outside looking in at the break (being 4th in the very competitive Tiant division), but a strong 2nd half propelled them to the playoffs as the #2 league wildcard. The Cautions and Bulldogs battled to a 6-6 tie in the regular season, The Cautions have home field advantage in this winner-takes-all series due to their higher seeding. ******************************************************************* ROUND 0 PLAYOFF -- Bulldogs (Shields) at Cautions (Wood). 162 regular season games, and for these two teams it would boil down to a single game to determine who got to advance in the playoffs. In the top of the 1st inning, Cautions ace Kerry Wood found himself in trouble in front of the home crowd. Marcus Giles walked, and Carl Everett was plunked by a pitch with 2 outs. The next batter, Edgar Martinez, went yard. 3-run home run, and Boston was up 3-0. Juan Gonzalez made it back to back home runs, and the Bulldogs were up 4-0 after 1/2 inning of play. Marcus Giles continued the Bulldogs run parade with a solo home run in the 2nd for a 5-0 Boston ballgame after 2. The Cautions first scored in the 4th inning, when Geoff Jenkins hit a 2-out single and scored on a triple from Tike Redman. In the 6th inning, with JC Romero on in relief for the Cautions, Edgar Martinez wound up at 1st on an error by 1B JT Snow. Pinch hitter Craig Monroe came to the plate, replacing Juan Gonzalez. Was that a smart move for Boston? Yes! Monroe went yard with a 2 run tater, and Boston was up now up 7-1. Carl Everett smashed a 2-run shot off of Romero in the 7th to make the score 9-1 in Boston's favor. Scot Shields would pitch a strong game for the Bulldogs, going 6 innings with 1 earned run and 10 strikeouts. The game would remain 9-1 Boston heading into the bottom of the 9th. Oscar Villarreal was working past his 2nd inning of relief. First batter up, Geoff Jenkins, singled. Villarreal threw a wild pitch, advancing the runner. Then Villarreal misplayed a grounder from Tike Redmon, placing runners at 1st & 3rd with 0 outs. Rey Ordonez hit an infield single, scoring Jenkins to cut Boston's lead to 7. Orlando Hudson singled, loading the bases. Pinch hitter Tony Clark hit a sacrifice fly, scoring a runner. 9-3 Bulldogs. Corey Koskie walked to re-load the bases. Villarreal was finally pulled in favor of Aquilino Lopez. Momentum was now on Alphaville's side but they still had a big hole to dig out of. JT Snow struck out. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, it was now up to Trot Nixon to keep the Cautions' season going. But it was not to be. Nixon grounded out to end the game. The Bulldogs scored early and often, and Scott Shields pitched a comfortable enough game to allow for the 9th inning Villarreal shenanigans as the Bulldogs win their round 0 matchup against the Cautions 9-3, and advance to the 1st round of the playoffs. 10/8/2003, BOS03-ALP03, Minute Maid Park 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E LOB DP 2003 Bulldogs 4 1 0 0 0 2 2 0 0 9 11 1 7 1 2003 Cautions 0 0 0 1 0 0
