2002 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Springfield Isotopes (104-58, Paige Division Winner) vs. California Kamados (106-56, Aaron Division Winner/AP Conference Wildcard) The Isotopes cruised to the Paige division title, their 2nd in 3 years. Barry Bonds had a phenomenal year, hitting .356 with 57 home runs, 163 runs scored and 152 RBI. Miguel Tejada hit .338 with 34 home runs, 119 runs scored and 159 RBI. Gary Sheffield hit .284 with 120 runs scored, and Mark Kotsay scored 101 runs. Robin Ventura hit 30 home runs with 94 runs scored and 107 RBI. Adam Kennedy hit .326 with 85 RBI, and Scott Hatteberg scored 84 runs. Curt Schilling won 21 games and struck out 320 batters in 261 innings of work, and Rich Helling won 14 games. LaTroy Hawkins saved 21 games with a 2.97 ERA and went 9-0 as a reliever. Scott Stewart saved 13 gaems with a 2.66 ERA. The Kamados had a stellar year, winning 106 games and tied the Mashers for the best record in the majors and a share the Aaron division crown, but enter the playoffs as the AP Conference Wildcard due to a tiebreaker. Derek Jeter had an outstanding year, scoring 125 runs, hitting .319 and stole 33 bases. Scott Rolen hit 25 home runs with 97 runs scored and 113 RBI, and Mark Bellhorn hit 25 home runs with 85 RBI. Pitching was the real standout in California's season. Roy Halladay won 25 games with a 2.24 ERA, and Derek Lowe won 20 games with a 2.25 ERA. Jamie Moyer won 15 games, and Woody Williams went 9-1 with a 2.37 ERA in 17 starts. Closer Octabio Dotel saved 39 games and won another 6 with a 1.61 ERA. In 9 regular season matchups, the Isotopes won the season series 6 games to 3. The Isotopes have home field advantage due to their higher playoff seed. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Kamados (Hallday) at Isotopes (Schilling). The unstoppable force (the Isotopes offense) met the immovable object (Roy Halladay) in this round 1 matchup. In the bottom of the 1st, Mark Kotsay took an 0-1 pitch over the wall to put Springfield up 1-0. California tied it in the bottom of the 2nd on a solo home run from Dustan Mohr. 1-1 after 2 innings. In the 4th inning, Barry Bonds led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout from Miguel Tejada, and scored on a ground out from Robin Ventura. 2-1 Springfield. In the 5th inning, Halladay put 2 on with 0 outs, and Kotsay drove in a run with a double. Scott Hatteberg singled, scoring another runner to put the Isotopes up 4-1. Halladay was done for the day. With 1 out and Bonds at the plate, a grounder to Mark Bellhorn was bobbled, scoring another run to give Springfield a 5-1 margin. They would go on to score 3 more runs in the game, and Curt Schilling would pitch 7 1/3 innings of 13 K, 1 earned run ball to put it well out of reach. The Isotopes win game 1 by a score of 8-3. In the top of the 9th, California added an insurance run with a Mark Bellhorn triple and score on a sacrifice fly. Octavio Dotel was closing in the bottom of the 9th with a 2-0 lead. First batter up, Scott Hatteberg, grounded out. Gary Sheffield struck out for the 2nd out of the inning. Barry Bonds walked to put the tying run, Miguel Tejada, at the plate. Derek Jeter has been a spark plug at the top of the lineup this post-season, and that trend continued in the 1st inning, as Jeter got a leadoff walk and scored on a double from Jason Michaels. The Kamados had a big chance to score some runs in the 3rd inning, loading the bases with 0 outs. But Ryan Klesko hit into a double play and Scott Rolen grounded out to end the inning with no additional runs. 1-0 Califonia after 3. Woody Williams was particularly effective against the lefty-heavy lineup of the Isotopes until the 6th inning, when with a runner on, the right-handed Gary Sheffield went yard, putting Springfield up 2-1. The Isotopes added an insurance run in the 9th with a solo home run from Barry Bonds. LaTroy Hawkins was pitching for the Isotopes in the bottom of the 9th with a 2 run lead. The first batter up, Jayson Werth, singled to put the tying run, Mike Lieberthal, at the plate. But Liberthal faltered, hitting into a double play. In the 2nd, California made it a 2-1 Isotopes game with a solo home run from Mark Bellhorn. Both starters would end up putting up good lines, as each pitched 8 innings, shutting down the offenses for the rest of their appearance. The game was 2-1 Isotopes heading into the bottom of the 9th. Scott Stewart was pitching for Springfield. First batter he faced, Derek Jeter, singled. Bobby Kielty walked to put 2 on with 0 outs. After Damian Easley struck out, Scott Rolen hit into a potential game ending double play situation, but made it to first in time. 2 outs, runners at 1st & 3rd, down by 1, and Mark Bellhorn was at the plate. Would Bellhorn be able to work some magic? YES! Bellhorn smacks a double, scoring Jeter to tie it up, and Rolen made his way around the bases to score the winning run. California wins it in the last at bat in a 3-2 game 4 victory to tie up the series. These two epic teams battled to a 2-2 tie in the first 4 games of their playoff series, and it was back to the staff aces to determine who had the inside track at advancing in the playoffs. In the top of the 1st with 1 out and Scott Hatteberg at first, Roy Halladay attempted a pickoff throw, but had an errant throw instead. Hatteberg to 2nd, error to the pitcher. With 2 outs Hatteberg scored on a single from Miguel Tejada. The Kamados tied it up in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff home run from Derek Jeter. In the 4th inning, Scott Rolen got plunked by a pitch and scored on a double from Brian Hunter. 2-1 Kamados after 4. In the top of the 6th inning, Roy Halladay found himself in trouble, loading the bases with 0 outs. He got Tejada to strike out to put 1 out on the board. The next batter, Robin Ventura, hit a grounder, which was thrown home to force the out. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, Adam Kennedy grounded out to end the inning as Halladay escaped a dangerous situation. California padded thier lead in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run from Ryan Klesko. 3-1 California after 6. Halladay pitched a strong game, giving up 1 earned run in 7 innings of work. Starting in the 8th inning it was up to the Kamados relievers to protect the lead. Mark Guthrie was on the mound, and quickly got into trouble, loading the bases with 0 outs. Jayson Durocher replaced him on the mound. Adam Kennedy atoned for his 6th inning performance, smacking a double to score 2 runs. 3-3 ballgame. Paul Bako singled, scoring another runner to give Springfield a 4-3 lead. Pinch hitter Travis Hafner grounded out to short, but that allowed another run to score. Springfield teed off on the California relievers to score 4 runs in the 8th inning. Springfield maintained a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th. LaTroy Hawkins was pitching for the Isotopes working on his 2nd inning of relief. Mark Bellhorn struck out. Brian Hunter flied out. And with 2 outs on the board, Dustan Mohr flied out to end the game. Springfield's 4 run 8th inning was the decider as they win game 5 by a score of 5-3. The Isotopes head back to their home turf a win away from advancing in the playoffs. Mike Lieberthal singled in Hunter for the first score of the game. The Istopes balanced it out in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run from Robin Ventura. In the 3rd, Scott Rolen hit a double with 2 outs, and scored on a base hit from Mark Bellhorn. 2-1 Kamados after 3. In the 5th inning, with John Burkett still on the mound for Springfield, Derek Jeter hit a leadoff single. Bobby Kielty doubled to move Jeter to 3rd. Ryan Klesko grounded out, but it allowed Jeter to score. 3-1 Kamados. The next batter, Scott Rolen, drove one over the wall. 2-run home run, and California was up 5-1. Steve Karsay became the new pitcher on the mound, but didn't have better luck, coughing up a solo shot from Bellhorn. 6-1 Kamados. Springfield would not recover.
