Manhatten Beach has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Fishbiscuits (Glavine) at Mashers (Sabathia). The Mashers wasted no time putting runs on the board in the first game of this series. In the 1st, Austin Kearns hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a fly out, then scored on a single from Eduardo Perez. In the 3rd, with 2 on, Perez got a base hit. Edgardo Alfonso scored from 2nd, and in the ensuing mayhem an errant Bernie Williams throw to third allowed Junior Spivey to score from 1st. Karim Garcia singled in Perez for a 4-0 Mashers lead. The Fishbiscuits had a scoring opportunity in the 3rd, loading the bases with 2 outs. But Jim Thome struck out, ending the inning still 4-0 Mashers. Spivey doubled in Alfonzo in the 4th to make it 5-0. The Fishbiscuits had a 2nd scoring opportunity in the 5th inning, loading the bases with 0 outs to bring Sammy Sosa at the plate. Sosa actually hit into a double play, which allowed a run to score. With 2 outs, Bret Boone struck out, yielding only 1 run out of the situation. The Mashers padded their lead in the bottom of the inning with a Darin Erstad solo home run. 6-1 after 5 innings of play. The Mashers scored another run in the 7th, putting the game out of reach. The Fishbiscuits would demonstrate their power with a 2-run shot from Larry Walker in the 9th, but it was too little too late. Manhatten Beach wins the opening game of this round 1 series by a score of 7-3. ******************************************************************* GAME THREE -- Mashers (Batista) at Fishbiscuits (Dessens). With the series shifted to DBL, the Mashers were the team to strike first. In the 2nd inning, Erubiel Durazo hit a 0 out single, moved to second on a David Ortiz single, moved to 3rd on a ground out from Junior Spivey, and scored on a sac bunt from Darin Erstad. DBL tied it up in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run from Royce Clayton. In the top of the 3rd, Alex Cora, Jacque Jones and Edgardo Alfonzo hit 3 consecutive singles, scoring Cora. With 2 outs, Ortiz singled in Jones for a 3-1 Mashers lead. The Mashers found themselves in trouble in the bottom of the 4th, loading the bases with 1 out. Miguel Batista threw a wild pitch, scoring a run from 3rd to cut the Mashers' lead to 1. After Royce Clayton walked, Bret Boone singled, scoring a run to tie it up, then having another run score on a bad throw from Jones. 4-3 DBL. Todd Hundley hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Clayton to put the Fishbiscuits up 5-3. They scored another run in the 7th when Troy Percival threw a wild pitch with runners at 2nd and 3rd for a 6-3 DBL game. The score remained 6-3 heading into the top of the 9th. Mike Williams was pitching for the Fishbiscuits. Williams gave up a leadoff single to Erstad, then a double from Austin Kearns. Greg Zaun hit a sacrifice fly, scoring a run, then Alex Cora grounded out, scoring another to cut the Fishbiscuit lead to 1 run but with 2 outs. Jones singled to put the tying run at first. Fortunately for the Fishbiscuits, that's all the Mashers would muster this game, as Alfonzo flied out to end the game. DBL wins game 3 by a score of 6-5. Each starter took a different route to join their team. The Fishbiscuits traded a future 1st round pick to draft Rodrigo Lopez in the 1st round of the draft. The Mashers traded a few journeyman players during the season for Terry Adams near the trading deadline. And now both pitchers would face each other in game 4 of this round 1 series. The Fishbiscuits would be the first team to score when Bret Boone doubled in a couple of runs in the 2nd inning. Manhatten Beach would cut the lead to 1 in the next inning, when Jacque Jones doubled and scored on a base hit from Edgardo Alfonzo. The Mashers had a chance to do some more damage later in the inning, loading the bases with 2 outs, but Darin Erstad grounded out, ending the inning with the score 2-1 in DBL's favor. In the 5th inning, Bernie Williams got a leadoff walk, moved to 2nd on an Adams wild pitch, then scored on a Larry Walker double. After Albert Pujols was walked intentionally, Royce Clayton banged out a base hit, scoring Walker to put the Fishbiscuits up 4-1. Adams was done for the game. His replacement, Chad Zerbe, had a rough go of it in the 5th inning, giving up a leadoff home run from Todd Hundley on his way to yielding 5 runs in the inning. Lopez would do what he needed to do, pitching 6 innings, and giving up a single earned run, leaving the game up 9-1. The Fishbiscuits coast to a 9-3 victory in game 4, and are a win away from advancing to the Aaron/Paige Conference Finals. FIVE -- Mashers (Sabathia) at Fishbiscuits (Glavine). Manhatten Beach's backs were against the wall, down 3 games to 1 and having to play another game on DBL's home field. Their offense came prepared, starting the game by loading the bases with 0 outs, then scoring 4 runs on a Eduardo Perez sacrifice fly, a 2 RBI double from Karim Garcia and a RBI base hit from Darin Erstad. 4-0 DBL after half an inning. The Fishbiscuits established themselves on the board in the bottom of the 1st with a solo home run from Sammy Sosa. In the 4th, with runners at 2nd & 3rd and 1 out, Ben Petrick grounded out, scoring another run for a 4-2 contest. Sosa hit his 2nd solo home run of the game in the 5th inning to cut Manhatten Beach's lead to 1. In the 9th inning, the Mashers got some major insurance runs when pinch hitter Aaron Guiel mashed a 3-run home run, putting the Mashers up 7-3. Guillermo Mota was pitching for the Mashers in the bottom of the 9th with a 4 run lead. After giving up a leadoff walk to Albert Pujols, Jay Witasick replaced him on the pitcher's mound. Larry Walker strick out and Rusty Greer lined out to put 2 outs on the scoreboard. Shane Halter singled to put 2 on. Pinch hitter Todd Hundley smacked a 2 out double, scoring Pujols to cut the lead to 3 and brought the tying run to the plate in the form of Bernie Williams. The home crowd was going crazy at the prospect of a major comeback, but the large run deficit was just too much to overcome. Williams popped out to end the game. Manhatten Beach wins game 5 by a score of 7-4, and send the series back to their home turf. Manhatten Beach was in another must-win situation, but at least they were back on home turf. The Fishbiscuits were the first team to score, when in the 4th inning Bernie Williams got a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on a Sammy Sosa fly out and scored on a base hit from Bret Boone. 1-0 Fishbiscuits after 4. In the 5th, Manhatten Beach pulled ahead on a 2-run home run from Darin Erstad. Both starters went 7 innings, with Cory Lidle giving up 2 runs and Odalis Perez 1 run. Manhatten Beach added an insurance run in the 8th when Greg Myers hit a 2 out, 2 on RBI single. 3-1 Mashers after 8. Jay Witasik was pitching for the Mashers in the top of the 9th with a 2-run lead. The first batter up, Bret Boone, grounded out. Jim Thome walked, and Albert Pujols doubled, putting runners at 2nd & 3rd. Larry Walker was intentionally walked to load the bases with 1 out. Next was pinch hitter Shane Halter. Big at bat for the shortstop. Halter hit a fly ball, but it was caught in shallow center field, preventing any runs from scoring. Now with 2 outs and the bases loaded was pinch hitter Vance Wilson. Wilson failed to deliver, striking out to end the game. Manhatten Beach wins game 6 by a score of 3-1 and sets up a game seven showdown, with a trip to the Aaron/Paige Conference finals on the line. Both teams have given it their all, and with the series tied at 3 this game would determine who moved on to the Aaron/Paige Conference Finals. In the top of the 1st, Bernie Williams singled and moved to 3rd on a Jim Thome double. Sammy Sosa hit a sacrifice fly, and Larry Walker hit a ground out, scoring Thome. 2-0 DBL after 1. In the top of the 2nd inning, with 2 on, Williams singled, scoring a runner. Jim Thome walked to load the bases, bringing up Sammy Sosa. Sosa was one of the most feared hitters in the regular season, and he demonstrated why in this at bat, sending one over the wall for a grand slam home run. 7-0 Fishbiscuits. The Mashers scored a run in the 3rd inning when Scott Williamson doubled and scored on an Alex Cora single. But the deficit would be too much, especially after DBL erupted for 4 more runs in the 9th, on home runs by Thome, Sosa, and a 2 run shot from Royce Clayton. With a 10 run lead in the bottom of the 9th, Fishbiscuits reliever JP Howell gave up a solo home run to Erubiel Durazo, but the outcome would never be in doubt as the Fishbiscuits win game 7 by a score of 11-2 to advance to the Aaron/Paige Conference Finals.
