Avila was the #2 league wildcard in the regular season, but proved their playoff mettle by defeating both division winners in the GT conference to advance to a 2nd straight world series. In 4 games, Eric Hinske hit .444 with 3 home runs, 3 runs scored and 6 RBI. Johnny Damon hit .313 with 5 runs scored and 5 RBI, while Jim Edmonds had a .421 on base average and 6 runs scored. Despite playing 2 games in Coors Field, the pitching staff had an effective 3.16 team ERA in the 4-game conference finals. Mashato Yoshii had a 2.57 ERA in his lone start, and "elite" Pete Walker continued his strong playoff performance, going 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his lone start. In 4 regular season contests, the Fishbiscuits won the season series 3-1. Both teams enter the World Series as #4 seeds, and the Fishbiscuits get home field advantage due to their 1-win-better regular season record. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Dragons (Clemens) at Fishbiscuits (Glavine). Baseball's career winningest pitcher in Roger Clemens faced off against baseball's 4th career winningest pitcher in Tom Glavine in the opening game of the 2002 CDBL World Series. Larry Walker gave DBL an early lead with a solo home run in the 2nd, and Bernie Williams followed up with a score in the 3rd when he singled, moved to second on a Jim Thome ground out, moved to third on a Sammy Sosa single, and scored on a Clemens wild pitch. Tom Glavine was throwing a shutout through 6 innings. In the 7th, Wiki Gonzalez singled off of Glavine, who was then pulled in favor of Julio Santana. The first batter he faced, pinch hitter Ruben Mateo, changed the scope of the game immediately, connecting on a 2-run tater to even up the game at 2. In the 7th, with 2 out and 2 on, Larry Walker gave DBL the lead again with a clutch single, scoring a run to put DBL ahead 3-2. Mike Williams was pitching for the Fishbiscuits in the top of the 9th with a 1 run lead. First batter up, leadoff hitter Kevin Millar, lined out. Alex Rodriguez struck out. And Raul Gonzalez grounded out to end the game. DBL wins the opening game of the 2002 CDBL World Series by a 3-2 score. The Fishbiscuits won the first two games of this series, but now they'd be facing Coors Field and "Elite" Pete Walker, who was 3-0 in his 3 post-season starts. Through 4 innings Elmer Dessens held Avila scoreless with 4 hits given up (including a nail-biting bases loaded situation in the 4th). Pete Walker didn't allow any runners to reach base through 4 innings. In the bottom of the 5th inning, with 2 outs and a runner at first, Kevin Millar was issued a walk. The next batter, Johnny Damon, hit a seemingly routine infield grounder, but Jim Thome failed to make the catch, loading the bases with 2 outs. Mark McLemore hit an infield single, driving in a run to put Avila up 1-0. In the 6th inning, Pete Walker gave up his first hit of the game, which happened to be a solo home run from Todd Hundley to tie the game. In the top of the 7th, Bret Boone connected with a 2-run blast to put DBL up 3-1. In the bottom of the 7th, Kevin Millar got a 2 out bases empty walk. Johnny Damon was hit by a pitch, putting 2 on. Todd Hundley allowed a passed ball, advancing the runners 90 feet. McLemore came through again, smacking a double to score both runners to tie it all up at 3. Both teams would trade a run in the 8th to make the score 4-4 heading into the 9th inning. In the top of the 9th, Keith Foulke was pitching for Avila, and recorded 3 straight outs from Shane Halter, Bret Boone and Todd Hundley. In the bottom of the 9th, Gabe White was on the mound for the Fishbiscuits. The first batter up, Mark McLemore, walked. He then stole second to put himself into scoring position. Eric Hinske flied out, but accomplished his goal, moving McLemore to third. Up came pinch hitter Ruben Mateo. A deep fly out would win it, but Mateo did one better, grounding a base hit to score McLemore. Mark Mclemore drives in 3 runs and scores the winning run as Avila wins game 3 by a score of 5-4. Dragons (Clemens). The stakes were high. DBL was a win away from repeating as champions, the Dragons wanted to win in their last game at Coors Field for the season. The Dragons scored first when Travis Fryman connected with a solo home run in the 2nd innings. In the top of the 4th inning, DBL tied it up when Sammy Sosa hit a triple and scored on an infield single from Albert Pujols. Avila pulled ahead in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double from Jim Edmonds and an RBI base hit from Fryman. 3-1 Avila after 4. DBL closed the lead to 3-2 with a Vance Wilson home run in the 5th. In the 6th, with runners at 1st & 3rd and 1 out, Bret Boone hit a potential double play grounder to Alex Rodriguez, who chose to throw home instead to try and get Larry Walker out. Bad idea. Walker made it ahead of the tag, run scored, 3-3 ballgame after 6 innings of play. In the 7th inning Tom Glavine was still pitching for the Fishbiscuits. Glavine gave up singles to Travis Fryman and Wiki Gonzalez. The next batter, Mark McLemore, broke the game open, connecting with a 3-run blast. They'd score another run in the inning for a commanding 7-3 lead. JC Romero was pitching for the Dragons in the top of the 9th with a 4 run lead. First batter up, Bret Boone, struck out. Pinch hitter Brandon Larson walked, and Romero was replaced by closer Keith Foulke. Rusty Greer doubled and Bernie Williams walked to load the bases. Jim Thome singled, scoring a run to keep the bases loaded, and suddenly the go-ahead run was at the plate in Sammy Sosa. Sosa had already hit a triple this game, and then had the biggest hit of his season -- another triple. Bases cleared, and the game was tied at 7 with 1 out. Foulke was pulled in favor of Kyle Farnsworth, who intentionally walked Larry Walker to set up the double play. Albert Pujols was at the plate, and the young star had the biggest hit of his season, a base hit single to drive in Sosa. 8-7 DBL, and suddenly the Fishbiscuits were 3 outs away from the CDBL championship. In the bottom of the 9th with a 1 run lead, the Fishbiscuits trotted out closer Mike Williams. First batter up, Mark McLemore, singled. McLemore's setup was immediately invalidated when Kevin Millar hit into a double play. 2 outs, Dragons down by 1, and Alex Rodriguez was at the plate with the season on the line. Rodriguez hit a 3-2 pitch to Royce Clayton, who threw it to first for the final out. DBL scores 5 runs in the top of the 9th to win the game and the season by a score of 8-7 to repeat as CDBL champions. FISHBISCUITS WIN 4-1, 2002 CDBL CHAMPIONS! PLAYOFF MVP: Several contenders from the Fishbiscuits in their 5-game series victory. Cory Lidle pitched a complete game shutout in his lone start, and Mike Williams had 2 saves in 2 scoreless appearances. Albert Pujols hit .474 with 5 runs driven in. But the 2002 CDBL Playoff MVP goes to Sammy Sosa, who hit .350 with 2 triples, 2 home runs, 6 runs scored and 7 RBI. Sosa repeats as playoff MVP, having also won it in 2001. 10/29/2002, DBL02-AVI02, Coors Field 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E LOB DP 2002 Fishbiscuits 0 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 5 8 11 0 8 2 2002 Dragons 0 1 0 2 0 0 4 0
