Last year's MVP was solid once again in 2002 for the playoff-bound Dragons. 1st Runner Up: Sammy Sosa, DBL Fishbiscuits AVG OBP SPC AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI HBP BB K SB CS .326 .388 .659 662 216 19 6 63 132 170 4 69 161 1 2 A terror at the plate once again, and the 1st runner for MVP up once again (and playoff MVP once again). Sosa easily led the league in home runs with 63 and RBI with 170, and his .659 slugging average was 4th best in the league. Sosa was top 5 in runs scored with 132, and his .326 batting average was 10th best for the champion Fishbiscuits. 2002 CDBL MVP: Barry Bonds, Springfield Isotopes AVG OBP SPC AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI HBP BB K SB CS .356 .528 .764 525 187 41 1 57 163 152 7 188 63 12 4 Bonds had an unreal season once again (the top 3 finishers for the MVP race are the same as they were in 2001, albiet in a different order). Bonds was a sabermetric wonder, finishing 2nd in batting average, first (and league record) in on base average, and 1st in slugging percentage. His 163 runs scored was tops in the league, his 57 home runs was 2nd best, and 152 RBI's were 3rd best. Barry Bonds had a runs created/27 outs rating of 17.8, nearly 50% better than the 2nd highest rated batter. All that and a Paige division title for the Isotopes. ******************************************************************* 2002 CDBL CY YOUNG AWARD 2nd runner up: Roy Halladay, California Kamados ERA OPS W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP 2.24 .569 25 3 0 36 36 5 1 261.2 226 69 65 51 175 6 24 Halladay put it all together in 2002, winning a league high 25 games. His 2.24 ERA was 2nd best in the majors, and he pitched a league-best 261 2/3 innings. Halladay's on base average and slugging average against were 3rd best (behind the other pitchers in this list), as was his 9.8 runners per 9 innings. Halladay tied for 2nd most complete games with 5, and was a big part of California's 106 win season. 1st runner up: Pedro Martinez, Hong Kong Cavaliers ERA OPS W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP 2.11 .528 16 8 0 33 33 1 1 234.2 160 61 55 44 263 14 14 Once again Pedro Martinez put the weight of the Cavalier's season on his back and tried to carry them to the playoffs. His 2.11 ERA was best in the majors, and his 263 strikeouts were 3rd best. Martinez was the leader in batting average and on base average against, and his slugging average against was 2nd best in the league. His 8.2 runners per 9 innings was tops in the majors. His 234 2/3 innings were 9th best in the league, but unfortunately for Hong Kong his burnout in the last few weeks of the season was just enough to prevent the Cavaliers from making the playoffs. 2002 CDBL Cy Young Winner: Derek Lowe, California Kamados ERA OPS W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP 2.25 .522 20 5 0 36 36 5 5 256.0 182 65 64 52 141 13 22 Lowe was a dominant workhorse for the Kamados in 2002, helping them to a share of the best record in the majors and an Aaron Division pennant. Lowe's 2.25 ERA was 3rd best in the league, and went 20-5. Lowe's batting average against was 3rd best in the league, on base percentage 2nd best and slugging percentage lowest in the league. Lowe pitched 5 shutouts, a league best, and his 256 innings pitched was 3rd best in the league. His 8.6 runners per 9 innings was 2nd best in the majors. His 39 saves was tied for most in the league, and his 39 of 43 save conversions was the best in the majors.
