2002 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Anchorage Gold Diggers (104-58, Gehrig Division Winner) vs. Avila Dragons (93-69, #2 League Wildcard) The Gold Diggers had one of their best years ever, winning 104 games on the way to their first Gehrig division title since 1993. Mike Cameron hit 30 home runs, stole 20 bases, scored 81 runs and drove in 100. Jay Payton hit .322 with 20 home runs and 87 runs scored. Kenny Lofton swiped 27 bases with 89 runs scored, and Tino Martinez hit 21 home runs with 79 RBI. Chuck Finley won 18 games with a 2.91 ERA, and Jeff D'Amico won 10. Closer Robb Nen saved 33 games with a 1.81 ERA. The Dragons slugged their way to the #2 league wildcard, using Coors Field to score a league high 1000 runs. Alex Rodriguez hit 49 home runs with 158 runs scored and 111 RBI, Johnny Damon hit 23 home runs, swiped 35 bases, scored 115 runs and drove in 121. Jim Edmonds hit 35 home runs and scored 127 runs, while Kevin Millar hit .384 with 28 home runs, 107 runs scored and 99 RBI. Brian Daubach contributed 32 home runs and 104 RBI. Roger Clemens won 15 games for the Dragons, and Gary Glover won 13. Keith Foulke saved 23 games. In 9 regular season contests, the Dragons won the season series 5 games to 4. The Gold Diggers have home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Dragons (Clemens) at Gold Diggers (Finley). The leadoff hitters came to play, as both Kevin Millar and Jay Payton hit leadoff home runs in the 1st inning. In the 3rd, the Gold Diggers took a 2-1 lead on another leadoff home run from Jay Payton. Avila tied it up at 2-all in the 4th inning when Johnny Damon doubled and scored on a base hit from Ricky Gutierrez. In the top of the 5th, the Dragons loaded the bases with 2 outs to bring Damon to the plate. Damon hit an infield grounder to Orlando Merced, who misplayed the ball. Damon was safe at first, a runner scored, and an error was given to Merced. Gutierrez added 2 more unearned runs with a 2-RBI base hit. 5-2 Dragons after 4 1/2 innings of play. The Gold Diggers scored a run in the bottom of the 5th, when Payton singled, moved to third on a base hit from Chris Woodward, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Chad Moeller. In the 6th, Orlando Merced, Mike Cameron and Melvin Mora hit 3 successive singles, scoring Merced and put Cameron at 2nd. Cameron and Mora executed a double steal, advancing the runners 90 feet. Pitcher Antonio Alfonseca singled, scoring both runners. Just like that, the Gold Diggers were up 6-5. With 1 out Woodward hit a double, moving Alfonseca to third, and Alfonseca scored on a sacrifice fly from Moeller. Anchorage put on a clinic demonstrating how and why they won 104 games, scoring 4 runs in the inning to go up 7-5. Avila closed the gap to 1 run in the top of the 8th with a 2-out solo home run from Alex Rodriguez. Anchorage closer Robb Nen came on in relief, and got Brian Daubach to strike out to end the 8th. In the top of the 9th, the score still 7-6 Gold Diggers, Nen got Jim Edmonds to strike out, Johnny Damon to line out, and Mark McLemore to hit a pop out to end the game. The Gold Diggers take the opening game of this series with a 7-6 win. Avila held Anchorage at bay for the rest of the game, and Keith Foulke pitched a 1-2-3 9th for the save as Avila wins game 4 by a score of 4-2 to even up the series.
