It's the last series of the post-season, and the stakes are high. Whoever was the first to 4 wins would be champion of the 2001 CDBL season.. In the bottom of the 1st, Larry Walker walked, stole second, and scored on a base hit from Jim Thome. Thome would score on a Sammy Sosa double. And with 2 outs Shane Halter singled in Sosa. 3-0 DBL after 1. Mike Matheny singled in a run in the 3rd inning for a 4-0 Fishbiscuits lead. In some years and with some teams, a 4 run lead would be enough. But this is 2001, and the team is the Dragons. In the top of the 5th, the bases were loaded with Dragons hitters and 0 outs. Kevin Millar doubled, scoring 2 runs. Aaron Sele grounded out, scoring another run. With 2 outs, Shawn Wooten singled in another run. Just like that, the game was tied at 4. In the 6th inning, Chris Singleton hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a Kevin Young fly out, and scored with 2 outs on a base hit from Kevin Millar. The Dragons held the lead for the first time today, 5 runs to 4. In the bottom of the 7th, Kerry Ligtenberg was pitching for the Dragons. Sammy Sosa was issued a leadoff walk. Pujols and Halter recorded outs, Sosa still at first. Ligtenberg threw a wild pitch, allowing Sosa to move into scoring position. Bernie Williams was walked intentionally to bring up pinch hitter Dave McCarty. McCarty came through for the home crowd, getting a base hit to score Sosa. 5-5 tie ballgame after 7 innings. Ligtenberg was still pitching for the Dragons in the bottom of the 8th, the game still tied at 5. Mark McLemore was issued a leadoff walk. McLemore stole second base, putting himself in scoring position. After Larry Walker hit an infield pop out, Jim Thome went yard. 2-run blast, and the Fishbiscuits were up 7-5. Bob File entered the top of the 9th for DBL with a 2-run lead. First batter up, Kevin Millar, lined out. Pinch hitter Andy Barkett lined out. And Jim Edmonds grounded out for a clean 1-2-3 inning. DBL takes the first game of the 2001 CDBL World Series by a score of 7 to 5. THREE -- Fishbiscuits (Burkett) at Dragons (Yoshii). Coors Field. For the top 2 offenses in the league, there were sure to be some slugging fireworks today. In the top of the 3rd, with no score in the game, John Burkett hit a leadoff single. Mark McLemore walked and Larry Walker was hit by a pitch to load the bases with 0 outs. Shawn Wooten allowed a passed ball, scoring the first run of the game. 1-0 DBL. Jim Thome walked to re-load the bases. Masato Yoshii threw a wild pitch, scoring another runner. Sammy Sosa walked to load the bases for a 3rd time, still with 0 outs. Albert Pujols hit a grounder, which was thrown home to save the run, but the bases were still loaded. Shane Halter smacked a single, scoring 2 runs. 4-0 DBL. Yoshii was pulled from the game, and Kyle Farnsworth came on in relief. The Fishbiscuits were not done in the 3rd inning. After Bernie Williams struck out, Damian Miller hit a tough grounder to David Segui, who couldn't field it cleanly. Error to the first baseman, and another run scored. Burkett, in his 2nd plate appearance this inning, singled, scoring 2 more runs. A Farnsworth wild pitch advanced the runners 90 feet, and McLemore drove them both in with a single. Larry Walker walked, and Jim Thome capped off the inning with a 3-run home run. 11 runs scored in the 3rd inning for an 11-0 DBL lead. The Fishbiscuits would score several times more, as did the Dragons, but being down 15-4 in the 9th, not even an impressive 4 run bottom of the 9th by Avila would be enough for them to threaten the lead. DBL wins a slugfest by a score of 15-8, and are a victory away from clinching their first ever CDBL title. ******************************************************************* GAME FOUR -- Fishbiscuits (Lidle) at Dragons (Biddle). A big game for both teams, DBL would become champions with the win, Avila would live to fight another day if they were the victors. Avila were the first team to score, when in the 3rd inning Jim Edmonds smacked a 2-run home run. Avila subsequently loaded the bases, and Troy O'Leary smashed a grand slam for a 6-run Dragons inning. DBL scored their first runs of the game in the 5th on a 2-run homer by Bernie Williams. They made it a 6-3 Dragons contest the next inning when Larry Walker hit a solo shot. But Avila put the game out of reach in the bottom of the 6th with a Jim Edmonds sacrifice fly and a 2-run homer by Alex Rodriguez. Avila lives to fight another day, winning game 4 by a score of 9-3. (Sele). The final game at Coors Field this season, the Dragons also needed to win this one to prevent it from being their final game as well. For DBL this was chance #2 at being the 2001 CDBL Champions. In the top of the 1st, the Fishbiscuits scored on an RBI single from Albert Pujols. In the bottom of the 1st, Jim Edmonds hit a leadoff home run to tie it up. With 2 outs and a runner at 2nd, Chris Singleton hit a grounder to Shane Halter, who misthrew the ball. Runner scored, error to the shortstop, and the Dragons were up 2-1. In the top of the 2nd, Damian Miller evened it up with an RBI single. 2 batters later, Mark McLemore hit the proverbial 3-run home run to give DBL a 5-2 lead. In keeping things close, Jim Edmonds hit a 2-run shot in the bottom of the inning to cut DBL's lead 5-4. DBL slowly edged ahead in the next 3 innings, scoring single runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings for an 8-4 lead. A 4-run lead is just a slight lead when you talk about Coors Field. In the bottom of the 6th, the bases were loaded with Dragons batters with 1 out. Brad Penny was yanked in favor of Jerrod Riggan. Riggan wasn't any more effective, walking in Jim Edmonds to force in a run. The next batter, Alex Rodriguez, smacked a 0-1 pitch over the wall. Grand slam home run, and suddenly the Dragons had a 9-8 lead. They added 3 more in the 7th with a solo home run from Ronnie Belliard, a wild pitch from Doug Creek scoring Johnny Damon from 3rd, and a Jim Edmonds sacrifice fly. 12-8 Dragons after 7. Avila had a 4-run lead in the top of the 9th, and Randy Choate was pitching. Mike Matheny struck out and Gerald Williams popped out. Frank Menechino hit a 2-out triple, but the Fishbiscuits would advance no more. Keith Foulke came in to strike out Larry Walker. The CDBL says good-bye to the 2001 edition of Coors Field as Avila wins a slugfest 12-8. (Miller). Avila wanted to win this to force game 7. For DBL, this was chance #3 to become CDBL champions. Back on home turf, DBL jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the 1st when Sammy Sosa smashed a 3-run home run. In the top of the 2nd, Avila closed the lead to 1 on a 2-run dinger from Ronnie Belliard. 3-2 DBL after 2. In the top of the 4th, Shane Halter walked. The next batter, Bernie Williams, struck out, but the pitch was wild, sending Halter to 2nd base. After Damian Miller popped out, Roger Clemens threw a wild pitch, sending Halter to third. 2 pitches later came another wild pitch, and Halter scored. 4-2 DBL after 4. Avila had a scoring opportunity in the 6th inning, loading the bases with 1 out. But Chris Singleton popped out and Ronnie Belliard grounded out to end the inning without any additional runs. In the 6th inning, with 2 on and 1 out, Damian Miller grounded out, scoring another runner for a 5-2 DBL lead. The score remained 5-2 DBL heading into the top of the 9th. The Fishbiscuits were 3 outs away from clinching their first ever CDBL championship. Bob File, who had yet to allow a run this world series, was on the mound. First batter up, Johnny Damon, walked. Mike Matthews came on in relief to face pinch hitter Ruben Mateo. Mateo singled, moving Damon to third and brough the tying run, Lou Merloni, to the plate. Merloni hit a sacrifice fly, cutting DBL's lead to 2. Pinch hitter Kevin Young came to bat, and singled, bringing the go-ahead run, Alex Rodriguez, to the plate. Rodriguez has had a hot post-season, but could only manage a fly out, which was deep enough for Mateo to advance to third. 2 outs, runners at the corner, and David Segui was at bat. Would Segui come through for the Dragons? Not this year. Segui lined out to Mark McLemore's waiting glove, and the game was over. DBL wins game 6 by a score of 5-3, win the series in 6, and clinch their first ever CDBL Championship. FISHBISCUITS WIN 4-2, 2001 CDBL CHAMPS! PLAYOFF MVP: DBL had quite a few stellar performances in their 10 post-season games. Larry Walker finished with 12 runs scored, and Shane Halter hit .342 with 11 RBI. But the playoff honors goes to Sammy Sosa, who hit 4 home runs, scored 11 runs, and drove in 14 in his two playoff series this year. 11/1/2001, AVI01-DBL01, Comiskey Park 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E LOB
