2001 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Aaron/Paige Conference Finals DBL Fishbiscuits (107-55, Paige Division Champ) vs. Arkham Investigators (98-64, Aaron Division Champ, 4-1 over Point Lomas in Round 1) Arkham won 98 regular season games and the Aaron division penannt, then bested Point Lomas in 5 games in their round 1 series to advance to the conference finals. Dmitri Young is hitting .429 with 3 runs scored, Derrek Lee is hitting .400 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI, Marvin Benard is hitting .333 with 4 RBI and Jorge Posada is hitting .300 with 5 runs scored. Raul Mondesi is hitting .333 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI. Mark Buehrle has a 1.38 ERA in 2 starts and Chad Fox and Jim Mecir have pitched 5 2/3 innings of shutout relief with 2 wins between them. Overall the team era was 2.35 in their first round matchup. DBL rode a thunderous offense and a capable pitching staff to 107 wins and a Paige division title. Sammy Sosa hit .317 with 68 home runs, 152 runs scored and 206 RBI. Larry Walker hit .339 with 47 home runs, 155 runs scored and 140 RBI. Mark McLemore had 47 steals and 116 runs scored, and Jim Thome hit 43 home runs with 43 homers, 107 runs scored and 117 RBI. Rookie Albert Pujols merely hit .320 with 35 home runs, 120 runs scored and 114 RBI. Bernie Williams added 25 home runs with 88 runs scored and 91 RBI. John Burkett won 11 games with the Fishbiscuits (and 14 overall this season), and Wade Miller won 10 with a 4.05 ERA. Closer Mike Matthews had a 1.86 ERA with 6 wins and 20 saves. DBL has home field advantage due the higher win total tiebreaker between pennant winners. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Investigators (Buehrle) at Fishbiscuits (Penny). The two pennant winners of the AP conference opened up their finals series with both hoping for that ticket to the 2001 CDBL world series. The Fishbiscuits were the first team to score, when in the bottom of the 2nd with runners at 1st & 2nd, Damian Miller hit a double, scoring a run. Alex Gonzalez tried to score as well, but was thrown out at home. 1-0 DBL after 2 innings. In the 3rd inning with a runner on, Dmitri Young knocked one out of the park, giving Arkham a 2-1 lead. DBL tied it up in the 4th with a solo home run from Bernie Williams. In the 5th inning, Tsuyoshi Shinjo hit a leadoff double, then motored to third as Sammy Sosa misplayed the ball during the play. Rusty Greer hit a sacrifice fly to put Arkham up 3-2. DBL tied the game up yet again in the 6th inning, when Albert Pujols hit a solo home run. Over the next 2 innings Karim Garcia and Larry Walker traded solo home runs to make the score 4-4 after 8 innings. Neither team would score in the 9th inning, so the game would go to extra innings. And extra innings we would have. Neither team would score in the 10th ... or 11th ... or 13th ... or 16th. In the 17th inning, Bernie Williams got a leadoff walk. Cezar Izturis hit a grounder to Aramis Ramirez, who missed the ball. Error to the third baseman, and there were runners at 1st & 2nd with 0 outs. Arkham got a bit of a break when the next batter, Alex Gonzalez, hit into a double play, leaving only Izturis at 2nd base with 2 outs. But someone's luck would have to run out today, and for Arkham, it was them. With 2 outs Damian Miller got a clutch base hit, scoring Izturis from 2nd for the winning run. 43 total players, 13 pitchers and 17 innings of play saw the Fishbiscuits edge the Investigators 5-4 in game 1 of this conference finals series. After game 1's marathon, both teams were hoping their starters would be able to give their weary bullpens some rest. Unfortunately for them it wasn't looking like it was going to be their day. In the top of the 1st inning, Arkham scored 2 runs with a 2-run homer from Jorge Posada. In the bottom of the 1st, DBL scored 3 runs, capped by a 2-RBI single from Shane Halter. DBL scored another 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd, led by a 2-RBI single from Albert Pujols. Randy Wolf would only last 1 1/3 innings for the Investigators. Arkham scored a run in the 3rd on an Aramis Ramirez RBI single, but the Fishbiscuits would continue to pour it on, scoring another 3 runs in the 4th, featuring back to back solo home runs from Sammy Sosa and Albert Pujols. Arkham's back was against the wall. Down 3 games to 0 with an exhausted bullpen, they'd need a strong performance from starter Russ Ortiz to save the series. In the bottom of the 1st with 1 out, Dmitri Young hit an infield single, moved to second on a groundout from Jorge Posada, and scored on a base hit from Aramis Ramirez. In the 4th inning, Albert Pujols got a leadoff walk. A sacrifice bunt from Shane Halter moved him to 2nd. Bernie Williams hit a double, scoring Pujols, and moved to third on the play when Raul Mondesi misplayed the ball. With 2 outs, Mark McLemore singled, scoring Williams to give DBL a 2-1 lead. Russ Ortiz was holding his own, only down 2-1 heading into the top of the 7th inning. Opposing pitcher Cory Lidle was also holding his own, and got a leadoff single. McLemore singled as well, putting 2 runners on. Larry Walker hit a ground out, forcing McLemore at 2nd. Jim Thome walked to load the bases. Up came Sammy Sosa in a target rich environment. There was a reason Sosa drove in 206 runs in the regular season, and he did so again, singling in 2 runs to put the Fishbiscuits up 4-1. Ortiz was done for the day as Jim Mecir was brought on in relief. Albert Pujols walked to re-load the bases. Mecir was pulled in favor of Adrian Hernandez. Now at bat was Shane Halter. Halter shut the door on the Investigators, smashing a grand slam home run to put DBL up 8-1 after 7 innings. Arkham would score a single run in the 7th inning, but a 6 run lead was too much to overcome. DBL defeats Arkham 8 runs to 2, sweep the Investigators in the AP conference finals and advance to their first ever CDBL World Series.
