2001 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Topeka Stingers (94-68, Gehrig Division Champ) vs. Avila Dragons (98-64, GT Conference Wildcard) The Stingers were at or on top of the Gehrig division for all of 2001, and fended off late challenges to claim their first pennant in 15 years. Richie Sexson smashed 46 home runs, scored 112 runs and drove in 114. Jeff Kent hit .311 with 26 home runs and 112 RBI. Paul Lo Duca hit .293 with 94 runs scored, and Javy Lopez hit .287 with 22 home runs and 81 RBI. Mike Lowell added 90 runs and 90 RBI in the hot corner. Javier Vazquez won 17 games with a 3.17 ERA, and Matt Morris won 17 with a 3.77 ERA. Russ Ortiz finished with 15 victories, and closer Eddie Guardado saved 27 games with a low 2.22 ERA. And they have Kevin Brown for the post-season, who went 3-0 in 3 games started, 2 of those being complete game shutouts. The Avila Dragons won all season long, but because they were in the same division as the Cautions had to settle for the GT Conference Wildcard. Alex Rodriguez once again enjoyed the friendly confines of Coors Field, smashing 71 home runs with 172 runs scored and 182 RBI. Jim Edmonds smacked 35 home runs with 143 runs scored and 89 RBI, while Kevin Millar hit .341 with 22 home runs and 100 RBI. David Segui scored 90 runs with 20 home runs and a .375 average in just 336 at bats. Johnny Damon scored 95 runs and drove in another 97. Under the Coors Field effect the pitching performed relatively well. Aaron Sele won 16 games with a 4.29 ERA, and Roger Clemens won 15 games with a 4.85 ERA. Closer Keith Foulke was effective, saving 27 games, winning another 6 and posted a 2.51 ERA. In 9 regular season games, the Dragons dominated the series 7 wins to 2. Topeka have home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Dragons (Sele) at Stingers (Brown). The Dragons came ready to play, tagging Kevin Brown for 3 runs in the 1st and 3 more runs in the 2nd to settle the game early. Jim Edmonds scored 4 runs and David Segui drove in 4 as the Dragons defeated the Stingers 14-5 in their opening round match. After the shellacking of the Stingers' pitching in game one, Topeka was looking to rebound in game 2. In the top of the 1st, Jim Edmonds walked, stole second and scored on a double from Alex Rodriguez to put the Dragons up 1-0. In the bottom of the 1st, Darrin Erstad walked, and Paul Lo Duca smacked a 2-run home run to give Topeka its first lead of the series. 2-1 Topeka after 1. In the 2nd inning, with 2 outs and 2 on, Rodriguez hit an infield single, allowing a runner to score and tied the game up at 2. The next batter, David Segui, hit a triple, clearing the bases to give Avila a 4-2 lead. In the 5th ining, Chris Singleton hit a 1 out triple and scored on a ground out from Ronnie Belliard to extend the Dragons lead to 3 runs. In the bottom of the 5th with a runner at second base, Orlando Cabrera went yard, closing the Dragons' lead to 1. With 2 outs, Erstad hit an infield single and Paul Lo Duca walked. Jeff Kent came up big, hitting a key double to score Erstad and Lo Duca to give Topeka the 6-5 lead. Paul O'Neill hit a solo home run in the 6th inning to extend the Stingers' lead to 2. In the top of the 7th, the Dragons loaded the bases to bring pinch hitter Jeff Frye to the plate. Frye took a 3-1 pitch over the wall. Grand slam home run, and the Dragons retook the lead, 9-7. The Stingers manufactured a run in the bottom of the 7th when Raul Ibanez doubled, moved to third on a single from Carlos Guillen, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Lo Duca. In the top of the 9th the Dragons added an insurance run to make it a 10-8 ballgame. In the bottom of the 9th, closer Keith Foulke pitched for Avila. Timo Perez grounded out to first base. Lo Duca flied out. With 2 outs, Foulke plunked Jeff Kent to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Richie Sexson. Sexson, who hit 46 home runs in the regular season and who could tie the game up in a single swing. Sexson hit a ball to left field, but it wasn't deep enough, flying into a waiting mitt to end the game. Avila wins a slugfest in a 10-8 victory. The series now advances to hitter-friendly Coors Field on the Dragons' home turf. Kevin Brown had a rough game one, and the pressure for his 2nd game was even higher: The team that traded for him speifically for the post-season was down 3 games to 1 and on the brink of elimination, and he would have to pitch on the home turf of the Dragons. The Stingers jumped to an early lead in the 2nd inning, when Mike Lowell doubled and was doubled in by Paul O'Neill. In the bottom of the inning, Ronnie Belliard and Johnny Damon reached base with 0 outs. With 1 out, Aaron Sele grounded out, allowing Belliard to score to tie up the game. Jim Edmonds singled, scoring Damon to put Avila up 2-1. Alex Rodriguez smacked a 2-run shot, and just like that Avila was up 4-1 after just 2 innings. In the 3rd inning the wheels fell off for Brown. With 2 on and 1 out, Damon singled, scoring 2 runners. Brad Ausmus singled, scoring Damon. 7-1 Dragons. With 2 outs in the innings, Brown was pulled from the game, putting up an even worse line than his game one performance. The Dragons were not done, scoring 2 more runs to put themselves in a commanding 9-1 lead after 3 innings. The Stingers tried their best to come back. In the 5th inning, Paul Lo Duca hit a solo home run. In the 7th, the Stingers lit the Dragons up for 4 runs, led by home runs from Darrin Erstad and Lo Duca to make it a 9-6 ballgame. But Avila would score 2 more in the 8th to put the game well out of reach. The 9th inning was a 3 out celebration by the home crowd as the Dragons finish off the Stingers by a score of 11-6 to win game 5. The mighty bats of the Dragons were too much for the Stingers as they advance to the Gehrig/Tiant conference finals.
